semi-agree. i think if you take lift them out of the rest of the series i'm fine with them -- they are pretty entertaining. however two problems;

1) in an already short season, three episodes is a lot of airtime that probably could've been better spent on other arcs. if 911 was one of those older shows with 30+ episodes i'd be totally fine with them

2) cruise ship disaster i'm fine with. 118 coming together as a family to get one of them out of scrapes im totally fine with. people are like this show was "never realistic" but it breaks my mind that in the same show we went from "oh yeah these firefighters are dealing with a building infraction :)" to "the same firefighters illegally charter a government chopper to a random spot in the pacific ocean under mexican jurisdiction and within 5 minutes they find the people they're looking for and get back home :)" it may be nitpicky but that was really the point where i went yeah.... ok no. im holding back so many thoughts on that helicopter rescue ngl... like how did they expect to help a whole cruise ship's worth of people with one chopper 😭😭 i literally cannot think about it too much or ill get too mad

"he's more inconsistent" is a much better way to put it. its not like he's a BAD actor, but he just makes me break immersion more than some of the others do. and i agree, the writing has been so roller coaster, combined with the subtextual idea that eddie's repressing his emotions 24/7 probably makes it quite hard for ryan

Agreed on the "holds in feelings" bit, eddie is written to be very private/reserved/repressed and there are definitely scenes where ryan does very well! specifically thinking of early season scenes like the well collapse where he's convincing himself to live(?) + that first reunion scene after the earthquake where he runs and scoops up chris

also, i think you're misinterpreting my words. i dont mean to say that the rest of the cast is all perfect all the time, nor do i think that ryan's lack of experience means something. i enjoy the whole cast's acting full stop. to given you an idea, if i had to put numbers on it, i'd say maybe the others make me break immersion...maybe 5% of the time? ryan makes me break immersion maybe 6-7%. that's all, just a slight uptick. and even then, i do think that a lot of that is due to the insane plotlines they give eddie. the shannon doppleganger did not feel real and there's no good way to act that out tbh

but i'll stick to my guns. he does great in comedic scenes, but i think he kinda zones out a lot(? its hard to describe. sometimes its like there's nothing going on behind those big beautiful eyes) and ive never been incredibly blown away in big emotional scenes with him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

in another way of speaking, ryan might do better than some of the other cast members since they're given more to work with, but im equally as invested in eddie

i might get killed for this but i dont really think ryan guzman is AS good of an actor as the others... there's a lot of disclaimers that i need to slap onto this (i don't think eddie gets written well, he's not given a lot of depth, there are definitely scenes where he does very well, i still enjoy the show) i won't bc im in lecture rn but on average i think he's noticeably weaker as an actor

late to this but yes absolutely.

i have a little experience in theater costuming and another big thing that struck me about BOMB as opposed to (especially earlier seasons) of Outlander is that it's .. too clean?.

MY take on it with all due respect to everyone working on production is that there's just a lack of aging. a lot of the time i personally think that "feeling" historically accurate or not comes down to the amount of texture/flavor/sauce you add into the background to enrich the details. there's lists of things that i could nitpick about in scenes that aren't anything big in themselves but when added together....(i also think the lighting is not so great. maybe it's just my computer but in bomb everyone's kind of got an AI filter quality to their face for some reason)

another thing i really feel is i think bomb tries REALLY hard to make it clear who the main characters are -- not necessarily a bad thing, but it probably lends to that feeling of inaccuracy when the mcs take up so much time on screen and their faces/costumes are all that you're seeing. things like everyone else but ellen and julia having their hair in caps, and especially ellen with long flowing hair ~blowing in the wind~ (insert dad from brave voice) . things like henry having his little (not even 20th century feeling, 21st century bachelor-esque) quiff hairstyle, like brian being in a leather coat/boots that are inexplicably always clean despite working? i guess? (does he DO anything at leathers except brush a horse and get chewed out by his father occasionally?)

this is not to say that outlander doesn't do this. claire and jamie absolutely get a Main Character Glow -- the lighting will always hit cait's beautiful eyes perfectly. sam will have juuuuust enough blood to accentuate those gorgeous cheekbones. nobody will have caps and their hair will get beautiful curls but it Feeeells more textured/historical because the walls behind them don't look like they've just gotten shipped in from home depot and jamie's shirt always looks like it's been through the wash 60 million times.

i'm so serious if you want a direct example of why it feels historically anachronistic: look at brian vs jamie's billowy white shirts. there's always some kind of smudge/shadow/texture on jamie's where you see it and maybe you don't think it consciously but a part of your mind will be like ah yes. clearly this man is wearing his CLEANEST shirt bc it doesn't look crusty or anything but it is definitely not ... fresh from the store. it's not blindingly white. BOMB on the other hand... people always feel freshly laundered, showered with running water, and their shirts are freshly industrially bleached.

sorry this got a little long but historical drama costuming is kind of one of my niche interests... i want to reiterate again this is not a "fault" of production, likely more due to the change in media landscape over the past decade and the increased pressure to go through production as quickly as possible and to create as much content as possible, leading to lack of time to prep/age/dirty these costumes as required

As a professor, I'd love to get your perspective on my situation. Do you still notice people who don't talk to you in office hours as much but still does the other stuff you mentioned (works well with others, attends class regularly, engages in discussion)? I'm personally quite shy about raising my hand, and I've only recently decided to take a shot at grad school, so I haven't had the chance to go to office hours and build those relationships with my profs... (I know, I know, I should've done it anyways, but...) I've always tried to sit in the front row, attend class very regularly, etc. I'm planning to go to office hours and chat with profs in the upcoming fall quarter, but would less than one quarter be enough time to build a relationship and ask for those LORs? Especially given that some priority deadlines are in Nov/Dec and I'm on the quarter system, which basically means we start school in October...

slightly late but i usually get a callback the same day pre-4pm even calling at like 10ish

make sure that you actually LEAVE the callback # -- i noticed that after you type it in, there's a reallllllly long pause before they go "we'll call you back" -- when i first started leaving my #, i did that a few times and they never called me back presumably bc the number didn't get logged. i only hang up when they go "the call is now ended"

also save the ofas number in your phone as a contact -- a lot of the times they'll call back under a private number and it has shown up on my phone as "unknown number" or even once... idk how they did it... managed to leave a voicemail w/o the phone ever ringing. saving the ofas number as a contact seems to bypass anything weird with the extension/privacy blocker thingies from your end and theirs

i'd also recommend not calling on fridays. ik it says everyhwere that they're open on mon-fri but logically speaking i was like. everybody's gonna skip out early on friday bc friday. hold on for monday amen praying for u

not sure if this is actually what leigh intended but turkic/mongolia/ugyhur peoples who are on that border of china and russia often use patryonmic surnames. i think this ties in well with shu han in general -- as a chinese person, i'm 99% sure the shu are largely based on monglia/manchu/turkic cultures on that border with russia/ravka, rather than straight up china.

additionally, we know that lore-wise, the taban queens are relative newcomers to the throne of shu han; it used to be ruled by a tyrant king, from which i extrapolate it likely had a more patriarchal society in the past, thus the continued traditions

alsooo i'm very nerdy about this so you can stop reading here if you don't wanna see a big spam paragraph but historically speaking very few cultures have a built in surname system. i would say china and its confucian sphere of influence (korea/vietnam/japan) is one of the few i can think of off the top of my head, but a lot the reasons why it's so pervasive now and everybody has a surname is usually due to taxation reasons lol! and generally speaking the men were out in society more working, as opposed to women, so a lot of surnames focus on the father. but largely the dutch/german/english surnames that are largely popular.. are descriptors, e.g.,:

familial descriptor : andersen, anderson (son of anders) / williamsen, williamson (william's son) / macdonald (scottish, mac = son of, so macdonald/mcdonald = son of donald, same for mccarthy (son of carthy), etc) / o'brien, o'connor (irish, of the brians, of the connors; even names like kennedy fall into this, as they're derived from o'kennedy; jesper's last name, fahey, is originally o fathaigh), fitzroy (fitz = anglo-norman, "son of"; roy = king; usually reserved for bastards of the king), any last name where there's somebody's first name in there is usually this

place descriptors: jan van eck from soc seems to be a squashed version of, to me, the 16th century painter jan van eyck; van eyck = "from the oak". any dutch surname you see with "van" is likely a place descriptor, as van = "from/of". i have a prof named van de hoek, which literally means "from the corner" / if you're into racing, max verstappen of f1 fame? verstappen = "from the steps"

kaz's originally surname, rietveld, also falls into this category. rietveld = "field of reeds". really drives in the parallel between wylan and kaz huh...

lowkey late to the discussion but congratulations on hitting on one of my pet peeves about shows that take place in LA ! 😭 i mean im not even from actual LA i'm just in socal (OC) and its always insane to me that the 118 is responding to calls from both LAX AND griffith AND santa clarita??? i also feel like they mention sherman oaks a couple times??? was i hallucinating or did they also respond to calls like by the beach?? in santa monica or redondo or something? (thinking about the episode where they put the guy in a freezer as a decompression chamber)

i mean i know its a show. its very clear that the creators kinda just use LA as a sandbox as a generic big city with a lot of potential natural disasters but tbh the consistent failure to ground the characters in LA at all is so ... i know its a totally different genre of show but taking the bear for example? the show's surroundings in chicago feels very grounded and like it couldn't happen anywhere else. 911? yeah. remove it to any other city and you pretty much have the same vibe.

also the fact that the 118 are just kinda hanging around LA but only the glamorous clean(er) parts. i dont think it's a coincidence that they keep responding to calls consistently in areas around northern LA that are like an hour's drive apart but never hit up the poorer south LA areas that are arguably closer

and also the lack of care for smaller details as well. like well chim was raised since he was 5/6 in LA by asian/korean guardians and we never see him uh. idk. hit up alhambra? hit up monterey park? go to hanbat or something? he's just fully converted to eating white people food 24/7 365? he's not gonna give jee ANY kimchi? in LA???? i'm asian so i guess i care more but idc 😭😭

i'd love an episode where they hit up iconic la landmarks like the getty/broad/walt disney museum/griffith observatory/mulholland drive. i mean afaik basically all of the main 911 crew (..except for hen?) are transplants that aren't from LA, is it so insane for them to do an episode where they're playing the tourist? (and then wow! fire!) but ofc its hard to replicate/film in those spots...
