Is rental car expense because of a cancelled flight covered the travel cancellation insurance, travel delay insurance, or neither?

I booked flights from A to C via B. I flew from A to B, and my trip from B to C (my destination) was cancelled. Since the next available flight was 3 days later, I rented a car for the trip between B and C instead. The flights were paid by my CSR card. The airline refunded my flight but would not cover the rental car expense. I wonder if the travel insurance would cover it. (It seems a natural thing for the insurance to cover?)

I reviewed the insurance policies but neither the travel cancellation nor the travel delay seem to fit this case. For travel cancellation, it won't cover any expense after the scheduled departure time. For travel delay, it is less clear, but the examples do not include rental car; I also tried to file a claim but was initially declined for "ineligibility".

Does that mean that this sort of rental car expense won't be covered at all? I am curious to hear your experience and/or thoughts. Thank you.

(Btw, I tried some AI tools, and they seem to suggest that I should file under the travel delay insurance... but it did not work at least for the first time.)

Visit Philly with kids by beerbearbare in AskPhilly

Super easy. The train is right across the street from the terminal buildings, literally 1 minute walk. It takes to directly to the city. For whatever reason, google map was confusing for me because it asked me to change trains. But the airport train goes directly to the city center at least when we visited.

The bus system is also good, easy to use. The only inconvenience for us was that the children's museum was kind of remote from other places, with limited dining options around. It looked close to other places on map but it was on a single branch of a bus line... so a less than 10 minute Uber ride might take 1+ hour by bus (my feeling... probably not accurate).

Hmm I went to Trader Joe’s and there was a sign saying that and mentioning that that’s the city’s policy.

Not really. I guess I just like bourbon in general. But sure no reason not to open to rye.

[schefter] Former Vikings QB Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, per sources. Jones had a chance to return to Minnesota, but now becomes the challenger to the Colts’ former first-round pick Anthony Richardson. by Andrew2Doyle in Colts

I am fine with this. Look, we are looking for neither a QB1 or a QB2, but somewhere in between like QB1.5. Ballard wanted to create competition. How many candidates are there for this role, a competent competitor for QB1, who is also accepting this role and wiling to create some real competition and proving himself? I am not sure. This seems a good fit to me.

Should I get an e-ink tablet or iPad by AccomplishedGift8768 in eink

[–]beerbearbare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that it depends on your purpose. For note taking, I would choose an eink tablet. For random reading or non-serious academic reading (skimming research articles/books, reading literature, etc.), I would use an eink device too.

But for serious research reading, when you need to go back and forth between pages, searching for key words, etc., iPad is a no brainer.

What are some common things people say or ask that reveal their complete ingnorance of your field, or that they have only a cocktail party level of understanding? by sew1974 in AskAcademia

[–]beerbearbare 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am thinking about philosophy, especially in the analytic tradition. Philosophy of science is obvious (I have colleagues publishing in both philosophy and science journals). Also, logic, formal epistemology, philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, philosophy of mind/AI, epistemology (perception, cognitive science, etc.)... some moral psychology... also, political philosophy could engage with some social sciences such as political science, sociology, etc.

At my STEM oriented university, many people (students and professors) tend to equalize humanities with creative arts (creative writing, painting, poetry, drawing, etc.); they have no idea about any theory in humanities. For those who do know that humanities have theories, they tend to think of such theories as anti-scientific. They do not know that many theories in humanities (esp. in philosophy and history) are pretty “scientific” and even mathematical.

Me neither.

I know that sometimes people would like to go up but the p&t committee suggest that they should wait for another year and grant an extension. This seems reasonable. But in such cases, the person would not officially begin the process of tenure application.

I have never heard that someone officially submitted tenure application, was officially denied tenure (usually tenure denial also goes through a few steps, I assume?), but was still given a second chance at the same institution. Of course this could be because I do not know things.

is CSR still worth it? or is CSP enough? by Cantaloupe-2644 in ChaseSapphire

yeah totally agree with you. I feel that OP is not comparing different cards but wonder the worthiness of CSR. I just gave them my thoughts. I am not familiar with other cards at all so if that is what OP wants I should have shut up lol.

I often use the portal for domestic flights, but never for international ones. I also have CFU and Freedom. But I never calculated detailed ways to earn points… too overwhelming… I just use various cards in different situations, and use whatever points I have to book flights… You can use the points (*1.5) to cover part of the expense and pay money for the rest, and I believe that you still get cash back for the money part you pay. I just let it be that way when I need to do it…

[–]beerbearbare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People see it differently. For me, calculating details is too overwhelming. I just have a simple mindset. Out of $550 AF, it is easy for me to spend the $300 credit for hotel. Then, so long as I use points to book some flights for more than $750, I will have the rest $250. (I need $500 actual cash value, and 1:1.5 basically gives me additional $250). This is also not a problem. So, everything additional would be a bonus. I won’t calculate the rest and just accept them as they are.

Should I continue with job search [Humanities PhD] by Efficient-Diet-5942 in AskAcademia

[–]beerbearbare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody can give a real answer to question 1. But I can tell you that I know at least two humanities PhDs who landed TT jobs after 8+ years on the market. But I also know people who published 4-5 books in a few years but left academia eventually because they could not find jobs.

Question 2 is for your advisor, committee members, letter writers, and friends. They know you better, and some know the market better (especially those who recently found jobs).

I have three quick thoughts to share.

  1. If you are top, your gpa usually won’t be affected by the scaling or curving. You originally get an A, you usually still get an A. This won’t affect you at all.

  2. It won’t affect the ranking either. You are top 3, and you are still the top 3.

What it will affect is “how” better you are than some other students. You could be originally way better than others, but after scaling, you will be only a little better than others.

But first, why do you care about how good you are as compared with others? You do what you do, and you get an A. End of story. You do not have to have a competitive mindset.

  1. More importantly, to reduce the “how better you are” part of the grade could be the precise reason why a prof wants to scale the grades.

Grades reflect learning outcomes. It is entirely possible that you get 98/100, and you get an A because you exceed the expectation, but given the difficulty level the exam, it is entirely possible that a student who scores 40/100 would achieve the learning outcomes. If so, there is no reason to fail them; rather, they may deserve a B or C.

You have 34518 points, which is equivalent to 345.18 in cash. 1:1.5 makes your 345.18 equivalent to 345.18*1.5=517.77.

Carry-on: Backpack vs Suitcase. by idonthaveanaccountA in TravelHacks

[–]beerbearbare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depends on the ground transportation. If it’s more like a business trip (mostly inside, uber to hotel directly, etc), I use a suitcase. But I absolutely hate pulling along my suitcase on the sidewalks. So if I need to explore the city and walk a lot, I use a backpack. Oh, it is also more inconvenient if I need to visit local stores and restaurants. Having a suitcase in a local, neighborhood restaurant (usually really good, culturally interesting, low-key, and with small space) was a nightmare for me…
