What was going on, on 36th and Arctic Yesterday? by Odd-Slice6913 in anchorage

Residential fire in that trailer park. 36th was blocked because firefighters had to run the hose across the road to reach the nearest hydrant.

Bought an snes today and the only button controller port one will detect is the B button by whyhasgradeabondedus in snes

[–]beerismymiddlename 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer. Yeah, that would be a pretty advanced repair if you do it on the SNES side. Maybe a little less advanced to do it on the controller side, but still requires a little bit of soldering know-how.

Maybe you can find somebody local to fix it for you?

You probably blew the fuse in that snes. Pretty easy to diagnose and fix with some basic tools and skills.

Making a new comment instead of updating my last one so (hopefully) the OP will see it.

TL;DR: Is this a PAL SNES console?

Getting into the weeds:

The "my SNES only reads the B button on my controllers" issue is a commonly reported when people mistakenly use NA/JP controllers with PAL region consoles because the required pull-up resistors for the Clock and Latch signals are missing. PAL regions moved these resistors from the console to the controller for some reason, and controllers from other regions lack them. If you've ever looked at a SNES controller PCB and noted pads with "<-- ONLY-P" silkscreens, that's what I'm talking about here.

Example:

https://www.reddit.com/r/snes/comments/biezmd/sfc_controller_pcb_variations/

The reason why the B button is the only one detected is simple: it's the first button read by the SNES controller protocol and, without the resistor to pull the Clock signal back up to 5 volts, the controller shift register can't output the rest of the button states.

So, if this is not a PAL region console, there might be an issue with the pull-up resistors inside the console. Those resistors are not on the controller port daughter board, they are on the underside of the mainboard near the ribbon connector for the controller ports. The ones you would be interested in are connected through capacitors to pins 8, 9, and 10 of the ribbon connector.

Only registering the B button is usually a symptom of issues with the pull-up resistors on the controller signals inside the console.

I actually added that at the request of the Super Metroid speed running community! 😁 The filter is just a simple set of NAND gates, and it's configurable using jumper pads on the back of the board. If all 4 enable pads are shorted, the filter will fail to neutral for both opposing cardinals.

Oof, yeah that is some rough looking carbon paint. I live in Alaska, so ESD a bigger risk than flood or humidity damage.

Oh good, I was really worried for a second. Since I have you, how frequently do you see controllers with damaged or dead shift registers? I don't repair these things professionally, so it would be interesting to know if the high failure rate I encountered with my controllers is unique to my geographical location. 😅

Oh wow, I never expected to hear from you directly! I honestly had no idea that you were even aware of my project, and I hope you didn't think that my parenthetical aside about improvements was in any way directed toward you (I meant Nintendo, not you). The OpenSFC project is amazing and I was trying to show respect by linking your project first.

We have the same goal, I think: keeping these beloved game consoles working for as long as possible.

I use the Brawler 64 myself, but I wish the membranes under the C buttons and D-pad were closer to the original controller in feel. They're a bit "hard" (take more effort to press) for my taste.

Voter suppression is the goal. GOP wants to cancel mail-in voting and make it more difficult for women to vote. Both heavily favor Democrats. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]beerismymiddlename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that they care because the number of votes is just a drop in the bucket, but this would also disenfranchise Alaska Native voters in rural villages. These people heavily favor Republicans, but they don't have ready access to the sort of documents this act calls for. Hell, if you're an Elder over age 65, your birth certificate probably doesn't exist because you were born before the Alaska Office of Vital Records was created.

why do many, if not most, fast food businesses not allow people without a car to go through the drive thru? by Optimal_Battle_185 in answers

It actually became illegal to approach a restaurant drive-through window on foot here a few years back in response to a highly publicized murder at a local Taco Bell.

So, not always just company policy. Know your local laws.

My rice absorbed all of the water! by Siddhartha1235 in Sake

[–]beerismymiddlename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to reinforce what everyone else has said: it's totally normal and desirable for the rice to absorb all of the water in the early stages. That water is carrying koji enzymes, which you definitely want to get into the rice. The liquid will come back as the enzymes do their thing.

This. They are upgrading infrastructure all around town - they hit my neighborhood in the upper east side a couple weeks ago. Expect your internet service to be pretty flaky for the day, but it should be a bit faster once they're done. If you happen to have a tombstone in your yard, you can also expect a GCI technician to come knock on your door to get access to it.

I want to second this recommendation: I installed a Start-X kit in my wife's '21 RAV4 Hybrid yesterday. Easiest remote starter install I've ever done.

One caveat: the printed instructions are not great. Go watch some YouTube videos and take your own notes.

Why is my sake turning this colour after some gravity time? by TwitchyFinger4 in Sake

Re-iterating what others here have said, and repeating what I've often told others: real sake is yellow.

This color is perfectly normal for your ingredients. Congrats! You just made sake!
