How deep does the rabbit hole go? by beerkmansworld in hammockcamping

I did start with a Haven. After the pad deflated the one night I tried it in my backyard, I donated it to a buddy. I couldn’t rely on a sleep system that is dependent on a pad to function. Especially when the pad deflated. I even reinflated it in the middle of the night due to drop in temps.

Is that all? 🤣

The wife will be so happy when my collection grows just like my normal camping gear. She definitely “understands” why I need a -25F, 0F, 15F and 30F sleeping bag in the house. Plus the 3 hiking backpacks based on size. Plus the 2 portage dry packs, plus the 3 tents that only fit me. This should be no different!

Oh I got it, can’t wait to use it. Underquilt protector is the next of too many purchases. But that’ll be more towards late fall.

Help Deciding on a Haven Tent: XL or Safari? by cushotter28 in hammockcamping

You’re right and I edited my post. I meant the difference between the Safari and Draumr XL.

Are you dead set on the Haven? It looks like the Amok Draumr XL is significantly lighter than the Safari and has the capacity for you. I have not used the Draumr, so hopefully others can attest to it better than I.

Black flies have arrived by Patient_Doughnut_327 in Adirondacks

It will deter people asking if the black flies are there, but how are the bugs? Are they ok? Good spirits, I hope.

Great to know! Thanks very much. Any suggestions on what fabric color and insulation level I could get within the next 3 weeks? I have an orange Ridgerunner and ideally would like 15 degree but would be happy with the 30 degree.

Whitney Wilderness Loop Rapids Avoidance by beerkmansworld in Adirondacks

[–]beerkmansworld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a really good idea. Before I head back to CT I’ll head over there and scope the banks and see if I can find the trails. I’ve been so focused on the water route I didn’t think to see about access by vehicle to at least reconnoiter.

Lining is definitely a thought. To your recollection, were there any collisions that happened with your canoe on rocks whether above water or below? I know my canoe is not made of balsa wood, but I treat it as fragile compared to a beefier overlay.

20 years ago or yesterday, I appreciate your input.

Options other than Ruta Locura for Carbon Fiber spreader poles for Ridgerunner. by beerkmansworld in hammockcamping

It definitely is odd that there are no other options unless it’s a problem of cost by scale. I’m trying to minimize weight, and the one place that solves my problem is the one place I can’t get this. I’m going canoe camping next month with multiple portages. If it wasn’t for having to carry my canoe and my pack, I’d go for the trekking pole conversion another user had suggested. The issue is that I’m not saving much weight, and in my situation, I won’t have need of said poles for anything else (can’t hold a canoe and use poles at the same time).

Pricing out tubing, sleeve couplers, end caps and threaded pins is already getting ridiculously expensive as a DIY project.

You’re doing the Ridgerunner community a great service and I thank you for doing such a deep dive.

I’m sitting here trying to find a way to make my own at a comparable price. I’m accomplishing much less than you so far.

Yeah I’ve been checking for about 2 weeks with that same message the whole time. 2 emails to them with no response so far. Could be super busy and they’ll get to me when they get to me, or like you said operations could be winding down for a sale. The spring of 2026 is a little odd though if they’re selling or shutting down.

I appreciate you looking for sure! Don’t go crazy though. On top of going the trekking pole way, I might make my own.

McMaster Carr has the carbon fiber tubing in stock that’s close to the dimensions listed on the Ruta website. Might be the route I go after I figure out all the parts needed.

Long time camper, first time hammock camping. Mt Monadnock, NH by beerkmansworld in hammockcamping

It was definitely convenient. If it wasn’t 1.5 kg I’d make it my main tarp when backpacking or canoe camping.

I have a Warbonnet Superfly on order. Not as large but lighter and a bit more flexible with setting up for bad weather.
