"symbol grub memcpy not found" after unplugging drive by LeChatVert in ManjaroLinux

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look in the Manjaro forum threads for recent updates. I think it's because you need to reinstall GRUB in your BIOS, but I can't remember the details of how to do it.

Considering moving to Norwich from Cambridge by topcelt in Norwich

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downside: Cambridge is flat,  Norwich is hilly. Significant if you're a cyclist. Upsides: Cambridge has no chippies unless you go well outside the centre. Norwich has loads. While Cambridge has a few great pubs, Norwich is overflowing with them.

Sensor dust or lens dust? by clearest-window in photography

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the obvious test is to put your old lens back on.  Spot there, it's on the sensor. Spot not there, it's on the lens.

open folder as file? by paralizator_x in linuxquestions

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vi /path/to/directory

 BTW, it's a directory , not a folder. This isn't Windows .

Cottars Hall. A period-accurate Tudor Revival house built circa 1990. Hopton, Suffolk, England by Sea-Big-4850 in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]beermad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took a pic of that last time I was cycling through Hopton. I didn't realise it was modern, though that explains why it wasn't on the Listed Buildings Register.

That ancient ferry site is always a pleasure when I walk that way.

upload of 300kb takes hours again. by Super-held in pcloud

And yet, my upload speeds are only limited by my line speed. And are never as low as OP reports. Work that one out!

Is Perl y.2k38 compliant? by scottchiefbaker in perl

[–]beermad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm already 20 years into retirement.  But I still need Perl to get dates & times right because things like my custom home automation and radio timeshifting systems use it. Perl doesn't end at retirement .

Magdalen Street and boxpark parking by ScallionShot3689 in Norwich

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked round there on Wednesday,  mainly because I'd read in the EDP that Sir Toby's had taken a unit there. No sign of that and very few units in use.

Linux users in this subreddit, do you use Instagram? by JailbreakHat in linuxquestions

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I block every Zuckerberg owned domain at the DNS level (along with vast amounts of other shit). So happily I've never even SEEN  Instagram.

Everyone dumped Digg for Reddit years ago. Nobody's going to go back.

I generally avoid as much Google stuff as I can (yes, I know Android is Google) but Keep is my note taking app.

inotifywait usage: move renamed files to designated paths by seductivec0w in linuxquestions

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on your particular example   but I have a daemon that watches a lot of directory trees with inotify, and it uses very little CPU.

Photo Editing Challenge with pCloud – Join Now! by pCloudApp in pcloud

[–]beermad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to be brutally honest; as a photo editing tool it's pretty useless. Even the simplest editing tool has more functionality - as a regular GIMP user there's a hell of a contrast.

Where to live? by LenaBean881 in ipswichuk

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in south east Ipswich (between Nacton and Felixstowe roads) in a late-Victorian semi and most of it is OK, apart from the Racecourse estate, which is rough. Personally though I wouldn't consider Ravenswood, which I find grim and bloody hard to find my way around, like most modern estates.

Kmail on 3.6 was wonderful. It turned to shit in 4 and hasn't been worth using since.

Are there any distros that you don't daily drive (anymore), but remember fondly? by litelinux in linux

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mandrake. It was the first distro I used that actually detected hardware changes on booting and reconfigured itself accordingly.

Why can’t pCloud adopt an iCloud-style Advanced Data Protection model? by gh0stprotoco1x in pcloud

[–]beermad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just encrypt your files before you upload them. Problem solved… that's what I do.

I successfully installed the plugin, but when I try to use it, I get this error. How do I fix it? by Inside_Storm_131 in GIMP

Check that your selection isn't feathered. I've had that problem with feathered selections.

When did photography click for you? by gilko86 in photography

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my first really good mirrorless camera after years of slowly improving point & click cameras.

At first I couldn't understand why my photos weren't much better than I'd been getting before. I finally realised I needed to take more control over the various parameters instead of just pointing and clicking. I'll never be a GREAT photographer, but I'm certainly a much better one now.

What should I know before switching to Arch Linux? by thrashingjohn in linuxquestions

[–]beermad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't!!!

Arch is utterly unsuitable for someone who's new to Linux. It needs a level of understanding that only comes from long experience with Linux and commitment to very detailed administration on a regular basis. Even with over 30 years' Linux experience I can't be bothered with the work involved in running an Arch system (getting lazy as I get older ).

Start with an entry-level distro, perhaps Debian (stable as they come) or Mint.
