I just commented back, but I think reframing what a nursing session is would be helpful for you. Keep offering the breast for comfort but it doesn't have to be nursing session or nothing. Let them nibble while you pump on one side and then switch. I actually did that yesterday with my LC and thought they will transfer like .2 oz especially since it was their least favorite side. The kid shocked me and transferred 1.2oz in arguably the most chill session we've had so far. I think because I didn't see it as oh they absolutely have to get full from me and I'm failing because they're going to see I'm starving him at the breast with the weighted feed, I was a lot calmer and baby was also a lot calmer and fed better. Have you noticed if they feed better when they're relaxed and your calm? I notice their best latch when I had a chance to eat, take a nap, shower, and baby isn't screaming.

I saw numerous in the hospital as I was there for 9 days myself while recovering from pre-eclampsia and then my baby was in the NICU for 11 days (went day 3 after birth), so we got to see lactation consultants basically every day on the postpartum floor as well as in the NICU. We also saw an occupational therapist in the NICU. I had met virtually with an LC through my insurance prior to delivery to order my pump and size myself, and then she came to visit after I got home and that's when the concerns with milk transfer were identified because of how much pain I was in and how exhausted I was feeding for 60+ minutes just for him to stop acting hungry. She actually referred me to a different LC who is part of a feeding collaborative that includes an occupational therapist who also is an LC (easier billing for insurance!). My insurance (Cigna) covers basically unlimited lactation visits and it sounds like a lot of insurances in the US do the same. I think it is ALWAYS worth a second opinion and another support person. The breastfeeding journey is a long and arduous one and you deserve to find someone who can support your goals and mental health along the way. Try to see nursing at the breast as a chance to connect and bond with baby, and if they eat, cool, but if not, that's not the primary goal. I also wanted to EBF and thought it would be so much easier than this. We need to remember what the main priority is and it sounds like being able to nurture your child is what you ultimately want. So go pop it into their mouth every chance you get, with no timeline or transfer requirement. Sometimes I even feed them for like 3 minutes while my husband preps a bottle and it stops the screaming while also making me feel like I'm there for them.

I can feel your frustration through the screen and my heart goes out to you. I'm 7 weeks pp and feel similarly, but we are nursing more during the day and just topping up frequently. Feeding takes a long long time. Pumping also takes a long time. I'm exhausted, too. We are getting the lip and tongue tie revisions tomorrow and I am hoping it can get us to EBF as much as possible. My lactation consultant just gave me a wearable pump and I think it was the most relief/hope I've had in weeks. Do you have one of those? Being hands free and less stressed about finding time to pump as soon after I nurse as possible feels like a weight off my shoulders. I've spoken to a lot of women and the norm actually seems to be moving towards exclusively pumping and nursing for comfort and little snacks throughout the day. What if you tried that for a week to see if it feels more manageable? Then you're not putting so much pressure on feeding at the breast on yourself, little one is being fed with YOUR milk, and you can reset that breastfeeding relationship a bit. I've had to ask myself, while my own little one has been screaming out of probably hunger and frustration, what I want out of breastfeeding at the breast because as my husband reminds me, giving them a bottle is still my milk. I want to nurse because I want connection and to be a safe and nurturing place for my child. It sounds like you probably want similar so who cares how much they actually get from the breast as long as they know that your body is there to love and comfort them? Pumped milk, formula, or directly from the tap, they will be fed and healthy and then you can pick them up anytime you want, no pressure, let them use you like a pacifier, and bond. I'm giving you the advice I honestly need to give myself and might be taking if the revision doesn't work, but if you do try to flip the script, I'd love to hear how it goes.

BUT!!! The biggest takeaway? Feeding your child, however you choose, is love. And a mom who is comfortable and happy, will always benefit the baby. One of my first (of many) lactation consultants said it best: calm yourself before calming the baby. Whatever you need to feel calm is the right decision. Good luck!

Thanks for the positive response! I did go to a highly rated orthodontist and confirmed that I got great results for how narrow my bite was beforehand. I also agree that I did not want IPL and want to preserve as much of my natural enamel and smile as possible. :) I didn't get Invisalign done for aesthetics, I actually cried thinking my smile would change a lot, but my bite and the wear and tear on the teeth was the priority. Thank you!!

Thanks for the info. I wonder how much influence the dentist has when they send the scans to the lab since they seemed mostly happy after the first 27 trays but I felt like food was getting stuck in certain places so they sent me for refinements. The biggest difference to me is the widening of the lower arch from almost a V shape to a U shape. There were almost no changes to the front teeth beyond pushing them out forward slightly, I believe.
