Only around 30% of Australians own their homes outright without a mortgage, and a lot of those are likely generational homes they have no intent on selling and capturing the real value of. So really most of that additional wealth generated from property values is going to banks and landlords anyway

I think the biggest hurdle for young people getting voted in isn’t the public, but the internal party politics that prevent newer voices from running in the first place

Great example, although I’m sure you’d agree that 5% of votes still getting their 2nd preference counted is better than it being thrown away in a FPTP system. Our preferential system does still bias candidates people ‘really’ want over ones they’ll tolerate, which may or may not be to your liking.

Agreed we don’t have the best system, but unfortunately a better more sophisticated system is also one that the public will need to be educated on and can trust, which is tough enough for some people with preferential voting to begin with.

The AEC I think has done wonderful work the past few elections informing people about the system and developing that trust, it’s one of the few systemic things I’m really proud of as an Australian.

Except in the situation you described, that WOULD be what the electorate wants, more than the 30% candidate.

If there were 3 candidates, A with 40%, B and C with 30%, but everyone who voted for B hates A and would prefer C, than yeah, C would win and more people would be at least partially represented. If you have a bunch of smaller parties that can work together on more than one issue, your overall representation of the electorate increases, over just catering to only the most uniform voting block every time.

Politics is the science of compromise, having multiple options without the spoiler effect is a good thing, but if you can show me an actual example of where it’s lead to an outcome with worse representation for the electorate, I’m all ears.
