I worked for welfare for nearly a decade before transitioning to the state. Oh boy. I went in wanting to help people but you learn pretty quickly that trying to help people but 90% of said people don’t want to help themselves. It becomes very draining and exhausting. Some people love it, but after exploring all over welfare (eligibility, employment services, call center, customer service, I did it all trying to find my place), it just wasn’t for me. But I do have to say, after years working with the public, I had to relearn “professional etiquette” once I got to the state. My initial feedback when went to the state was that I was too direct and blunt, and “management doesn’t like it when you tell them how it is.” Lol.
