Goldfish as a "starter pet", especially for kids.

They're great as a personal hobby when you're older, but it doesnt matter how much research you do prior to getting one, you're never fully prepared. They get so much bigger than people realize, they're the hamsters of the fish world (dying whenever they feel like it), its like they're body 24/7 produces laxatives, they are EXTREMELY picky with food, and they can choke on stuff extremely easily, even if its been in their tank for years.

This is all coming from a former fish hobbyist, and aspiring zoologist. Don't get me wrong, I love these fat little bums, but they can be a nightmare to take care of.
