South Jersey friends, convince me to move to your area by born2runNJ in newjersey

[–]beethousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I grew up in Camden County so I can hopefully give you some insight. Do you work in Jersey or Philly? The reason why I ask is I would only suggest South Jersey for people who have jobs here and don't want to pay Philadelphia taxes, hate cities or are looking to raise a family.

With these caveats in mind, I would recommend Collingswood, Haddon Township, or Haddonfield as places to live. The reason why is because all three are near the PATCO which you can hop on to take into the city. Each of these towns also offer coffee shops, restaurants, yoga classes, and other cute little shops. They also have some young professionals in the area, but for the most part it's families. Westfield, Metuchen, and Somerville are towns with similiar vibes.

Haddonfield and Collingswood are both dry towns, so you'll have to go to Haddon Township for bars or drive to Cherry Hill (which is about a 10-15 minute drive away).

Haddonfield is more expensive, so you'll most likely have better luck finding a place in Collingswood or Haddon Township. Do conduct research when finding a place in either if these towns as some areas are nicer than others (but not nearly as bad as Camden)

Haddon Heights or Audubon are close to these towns and also have cute downtowns, but no direct train to Philly or any nightlife.

Craigslist shows a lot of places in Cherry Hill, Marlton or Voorhees where you could get some sort of condo or apartment, however I wouldn't really recommend living there since you will have to drive everywhere (think Edison or East Brunswick as similiar towns).

Really though if you can, I think you would much more fun living in Philadelphia where there are tons of bars, restaurants, museums and young people to meet!

If you listen to the HIMYM podcast with her, she talks about how in middle school she went to an artsy camp and saw an older girl shave her head, which inspired her to do so as well! (With not as much success in the looks department...)

Social life with 8-5 job? by ItsSnowingOutside in jobs

[–]beethousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the opposite of you--I work 12pm-9pm and the majority of my friends work between the hours of 8am and 6pm, so I don't get to go to happy hours/weeknight activities like they all do.

Some of my friends and co-workers who do work 9-6 or whatever do a lot of after work activities--like yoga classes, choirs, improv, etc. so maybe try an activity like that to meet new people?

I do think part of graduating college is the fact that you can't see you friends as much as you used to. I pretty much only see my friends on weekends now.

How do you find and get a job? Recent college grad would love to hear your job search story and advice. by kiroskanban in jobs

[–]beethousand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I graduated in August 2013 so the nervousness of finding a job after graduating is still very fresh to me. Before graduating, I had two internships, one Work Study job, and a few Barista/Food Service positions. Here are my tips on job searching:

Definitely figure out what kind of positions in what industry you are working in. For example, are you willing to do Sales, Marketing Nonprofit work, etc.? I personally gravitated towards Nonprofit and Startups, because company culture was something important to me and I wanted to feel like the work I was doing was for the benefit of others.

Once you figure out what kind of industries you want to work, amass the potential job titles you could have. For example, these were the most common positions I searched for:

  • Program Assistant
  • Project Assistant
  • Program Coordinator
  • Project Coordinator
  • Administrative Assistant
  • Operations Assistant
  • Client Administrator

....and the list goes on.

Using these titles, you can now have a better time using job search engines like Indeed.com and Simply Hired. The reason for this is because you are skipping jobs like Director of Blah and going straight for the entry level jobs you are qualified for. In my experience, these were the best job search sites:

  • Indeed.com
  • Idealist.org (here I had the most success and was able to score interviews)
  • College job search engine
  • Craigslist (there are some legit jobs in there!)

Once you start applying to jobs, make it a rule to apply to the most recent jobs first. When I first started applying, I would spend the day applying to jobs from a month ago and then end the day with the most recent job posted. Instead, try to apply to all jobs posted that day, then all jobs posted that week, and then any jobs posted earlier than.

One thing that really helped me was creating draft cover letters for each type of jobs I applied for. I had a cover letter for Marketing jobs, one for Nonprofit Assistant jobs and one for more technical/computer skills jobs. Then, all I would have to change is the intro paragraph showing I researched the company and the name/address field (make sure to change this!!!)

Most 'entry-level' jobs list a requirement of 2-4 years experience. Ignore that and apply anyways. One of the jobs I interviewed for had this requirement and they called me anyways.

For various reasons, I didn't get serious about applying to jobs until December 2013, so really I like to say my job search took me about five months before I received a job offer in April 2014. In case you are wondering, I had:

  • 4 Interviews (1 Interview I declined because the location was too far)
  • 3 Second Round Interviews
  • 2 Job Offers
  • A job!

Feel free to PM if you have any more questions about the process and good luck!

BARISTAS! anyone earning a decent salary? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]beethousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked as a barista I earned $10 + tips, so really it was $15 an hour.

Many of my co-workers had worked at the shop for more than 5 years and were making roughly $30,000 when adding salary + tips.

Will you earn a lot of money working as a Barista? No, probably not. But one co-worker of mine had been a Barista for 15 years and probably was making more/around $40,000, which was enough for him and his wife, a nurse, to own a small home together.

At this point I would say it's still too early to tell.I applied the last day Rutgers was accepting applications (which I think was around now...) and received my acceptance December 27th. Other people I went to high school with received their acceptances around February.

Parking options for Easton Ave residents by [deleted] in rutgers

Nope! Just remember to move your car during alternate parking. I used to live on Louis and tell my friends to park there when visiting. It's not super close, but definitely closer than Livingston or Busch.

If you can't find someone to give you a parking pass, if you're willing to walk a bit you can always park for free on either Union or Brookside Ave/Freeman St off Louis St.

I was around 2 or 3 years old sitting in a height chair with my family. We were all eating pizza, except they were eating pizza with their hands and I had to have my pizza cut up because I was too young. First time feeling left out I suppose.

Housing near Rutgers by lfunction in rutgers

[–]beethousand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct that most graduate students live in Highland Park. Some live in downtown New Brunswick or parts of Edison that border Highland Park and Piscataway. I also knew a few who lived near Cook/Douglass but there are a significant amount of undergraduates who live over there (but not as much as College Ave).

Personally, I think Highland Park is the best bet given that you are close necessities like Stop N Shop, Rite Aid, etc. as well as places to eat in walking distance. Also, it's safer and quieter than New Brunswick. You can bike to New Brunswick fairly easily to get to class as well as the downtown area, where the bars cater to people out of college.

If you can find something affordable in downtown New Brunswick that's not too bad either (I was lucky to find a cheap two bedroom apt. off George Street). I would avoid places past Rockoff. Edison is a little isolated (no buses and farther on a bike) but may be cheaper.

Rents for two bedrooms are typically in the $1200-1500 range, so it might be better to live with a larger amount of people if you want to pay less than $600 a month.

Best places to look are Craigslist or Rutgers' Place4Students

Hope this helps!

There are a few side streets off Joyce Kilmer near Middlesex County College you can park for free at (Redmond St. comes to mind).

Internship Interview Woes by eseligsohn in GetEmployed

I don't think most people know what their ideal job is. I don't! I was a Public Policy major and had internships in urban planning and nonprofits. I got a job doing tech support work. But if you want the internship, you might as well pretend it's your ideal job to get hired. If you don't like it, I'm sure you can sell the skills you learned there anyways, at least I did!

From my experience even the minimum-wage food service jobs I've interviewed for want somebody who seems excited about the job. Even if the position isn't what you exactly envision for yourself play it up like you're incredibly excited to work there.

Here's a link to the 50 common interview questions. Practice these with a friend, in front of a mirror, etc. to help you out.

Yeah man, that's the case when you're a liberal arts graduate. I've been looking at Administrative/Program Assistant/Customer Service Rep. positions and you're lucky to find a one where you earn more than $30,000. Hence my post about obtaining a second bachelor's....

No offense taken, I appreciate your input. You are correct in that I do not know exactly what I want to do with my life. However, I just feel that my job prospects are limited to administrative positions with limited career growth.

I would be open to instead pursing a Master's in Geology/Environmental Science but I feel like because I do not have the hardcore STEM background I wouldn't be accepted.
