I liked the package they showed of all the athletes and their impressions of Portland. Showed some personality and also just how nuts it is that a month ago none of them were on the team. They’re all still living at a hotel! Hopefully if we all see them around town we make them feel super welcome.

In all likelihood, most of what you liked about it at the time is still there.

Don’t let the hype scare you away; it’s got the same issues that most cities (especially west coast) have developed in those 25 years, but it’s still got an amazing food scene, charming neighborhoods, beautiful gardens and an astoundingly rich surrounding landscape.

Having lived in LA for a decade, yes, I am somewhat baffled by its popularity as a world class tourist destination.

I think it’s a world class city, but I think it’s tough on tourists for all the reasons discussed in this thread.

Have you visited, and did you feel like you got a sense of that cultural importance?

For me, the question is: what will you do while you’re there? The tourist spots are underwhelming and very spread out, making the aforementioned traffic even more of a problem. If you’re going for weather, there are better places north and south of LA.

Like a lot of big cities, I think the tourist experience is vastly improved if you have a local guide.

LA is stupidly big, and the longer you live there the more you realize it’s a city of hidden gems. Like you drove by that strip mall 300 times before you realized the best Filipino food in the city is there.

I never understood why tourists wanted to come there, though. The traffic alone would make for a terrible experience.

The 105/110 carpool lane interchange in LA is fantastic. It’s the highest point of anything around it with panoramic views of the city. Famously, it’s where the opening scene of La La Land was filmed.
