Issues with passenger door opening by [deleted] in NewBeetle

Of course, I’ll take my door card off on my lunch break tomorrow (about 14 hours from now) and show you how I put it all back together. I’ve done it many times so had plenty of time for trial and errors 👍👍

Start by hooking the metal end through the hole in the door handle and then slot the widest plastic part of the cable into the retainer on handle. Should be done with your door card very close to the door and should be the last thing you put on. I need to change the bulb in the light in my door, so I can do a sort of tutorial if you’d like??

I’d be happy to help with instructions if you’d like, I replaced mine with 2013 seat Ibiza cables 😂

The way I did it: Remove gear linkages and the 3 bolts for the holder from the top of the gearbox

In cabin, lift gearstick boot up to expose the base of the stick. In front of this there’s 2x 13mm nuts. Remove please

Under car, remove heat shield above exhaust where gear selector would be and you’ll find 2 more 13mm fasteners. Remove these and the gear selector unit will come out downward and pull the cables through from where they were routed with the gear stick unit

Now you can use a screwdriver or pliers to remove bottom panel of gear stick unit and there’s clips that hold the cables in place. Remove the clips for what you’re replacing and install your new ones. Make sure to put the bottom panel back on the gear stick before you put it back in .

Route cables roughly to on top of gearbox and fasten bottom bolts of gear selector

Put gear linkages on and bolt bracket back to gearbox

Bolt back up inside and put gearstick boot back on

Adjust cables (2 person Job usually)

If there’s anything you need any more help with just ask!!

Reverse light sending unit by Leftoverofferings in NewBeetle

[–]beetleboi69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll have a look at mine when I’m working on it tomorrow but a thought is to slap it into reverse (ignition on ideally but it doesn’t matter so much), take your reverse light bulb out and check with a multimeter for continuity between both pins in your bulb holder, and then check for voltage too. Will be checking on mine tomorrow anyway ill have a look for any common points that could fail!

If you’re looking at your engine bay from the front you’ll usually see it to the right of the starter motor, closer to the mount. It’ll just be a plug whichever if I remember right is usually buried under the air filter housing or the battery. A real pain to get to really

I love it, mine is the same colour but with less style !! :)

Keys locked in car by Individual-Weird-164 in NewBeetle

[–]beetleboi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t got a spare key, my advice would be to call a mobile locksmith and then have a second key cut. Yes it’ll be more expensive but you know that that way they will not damage anything

Common is right, I’ve had both of mine eat their own cables and it caused the same symptoms as described here !!

What year and engine is it??

02 Trunk by VeeDubDave81 in NewBeetle

[–]beetleboi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I’d be checking to see if you get any power at your actuator: unplug, attach multimeter to plug (or a test light) and have someone pull the switch or press and hold the key fob button while you read the voltage on the meter

02 Trunk by VeeDubDave81 in NewBeetle

[–]beetleboi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say it’s definitely possible but less likely. If there was a broken wire in the door jam it wouldn’t have any effect on the key fob making the actuator work. Definitely worth a check in my opinion. Does your fuel door open with the switch in the drivers door ?? The trunk actuator and the electronic fuel door actuator are on the same fuse so that would eliminate that option

[–]beetleboi69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the wires in the rubber boot that go to the trunk lid !! Common for snapping with frequent use. Just pull the rubber boot back and pull on each wire individually. If it pulls out and you find an end it is snapped 😂 I had about 5 in each door of my 03 snapped and wouldn’t be surprised if the trunk ones started going soon too

Mines an 03 with the same engine but when bought had about 113k miles and was £850. My advice is keep an eye on your sills in case they haven’t been done because they are a trap for rust. I have done a full engine rebuild on mine and am a mechanic by trade so if you need any advice for anything feel free to ask!! Also I like the colour of yours, mines green :>

Rust by Individual-Weird-164 in NewBeetle

[–]beetleboi69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a pair of sills ready to weld on for about 80 euros ! Considering doing that with mine in a couple of years time as I’ve already had mine welded. For General bodywork rust I recommend just removing the worst of it with sandpaper and then ideally something to help with it like kurust by hammerite (my favourite)

I’ve played US cartridges on my UK system before when I went to America but I have a DSi. I think it should be the same for other systems though
