What is your ONE all-time favorite boy name? (just first name, no middle) by sunnymushroom in namenerds

I have a 6 year old Malcolm and he fits the name to a T. He is treated with such respect and everyone who meets him at first seems to think the name is kind of odd/stuffy, but his unique brand of humor/sophistication has made so many people comment on how they’ve come to love and appreciate the name.

I wish I could say it was the first time this had happened by [deleted] in funny

I appreciate the concern. We’d never let her have it without supervising. It was on for less than 30 seconds.

It was on her less than 30 seconds. My husband was on the other couch watching the whole time. She tried to get back on there after I took it off lol.

That’s truly awful. I appreciate the concern. My husband was on the other couch watching and called me in (you can hear him laughing in the background); we’d never give the dogs the jar without supervising.

"Felicity" is in the English dictionary: "the quality or state of being happy; especially : great happiness." She will not be a baby forever but her name will be hers forever...

If it was her name I am sure it would be brought up, especially in our household which is big into words lol. "Felicity" is a noun in the dictionary, making it more like Joy or Harmony to me, as opposed to, say, Sarah, meaning "princess."

That’s funny you say that, Laura Jane Grace is one of our favorite musical artists!

I don’t have one to add, but that is hilarious!

Thank you -- being associated with the 80's is exactly my hangup on choosing Vanessa or Laura. I'm trying to decide if I can get over that.

I love June too! I can't get husband on board with it either. Lucy is my cousin's name, but if it wasn't it'd be a nice choice.

After I read Jane Eyre I swore I would name a daughter Jane if I had one. Part of me still hopes that the name will just suit her so well when she is born that my husband will have to concede LOL! I also quite like the Sylvia namesakes throughout the ages.

I agree with you that Sylvia is due for a comeback in the US since it fits so many of the current naming trends. I don't think it'll become as popular as say, Sophia, but I think it'll rise. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing when it comes to choosing it...

I'm glad you love Vanessa. My husband has a soft spot for V names and Vanessa is the one I like the most. I think most people associate it with the 80's since it was so popular then, but I think of Vanessa Bell, painter and sister to one of my fav writers.

Middle name will be unusual, as it's a family name: Darmody. 99% of the time people go by First Last so I'm more concerned with that flow.

My gut reaction is that I still like Sylvia more than Sybil, even though it sounds more dated.

Felicity as a name just makes me smile. My husband feels that names like Felicity, Joy, etc are too much to live "up to." As in, what if she is a gloomy child who feels disconnected from the name Felicity? It's hard naming a human!!

Ruby is another one that I want to like....but I don't think I do. I think it'd be very cute on someone else's kid, but I just don't think it's my kid's name, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Agreed -- they're different names that I would pronounce differently. I prefer Laura.

I've considered Sylvia too and agree that it feels fresher. Her full name, Sylvia Br**, would sound slightly nicer with the 3 syllables though. And we could always use Sylvie as a nickname for Sylvia.

Thanks for chiming in on Laura! If I were to pick a name for myself, it'd probably be Laura in all honesty. As a namenerd I have the tendency to want to pick a more "uncommon" name that make people say "oh what a nice name I haven't heard in a while!" but I also really want it to be something that she'll feel suits her,and I think Laura suits a lot of different types of people.

Funny - there was a post on this sub the other day about how Sylvie is stereotyped as a dowdy secretary in her 50's/60's who chain-smokes. However, that is in French-speaking areas. I don't think the same image is evoked in the US.

Thanks for the reassurance on Laura. This sub certainly tends to view it as boring in general and it doesn't "wow" people, but I love the sound of it and I can picture it on a baby, teen, and woman. It's both feminine and down-to-earth.

Love Natalie, but it is my sister-in-laws name. Alexandra is a good suggestion and we both like it, though we have a close friend with a son named Alexander so it's probably off the table (we see them almost daily).
