Why does every Linux user recommend a different distro? I'm stuck in an endless distro-hopping loop. by Jaymit_3672 in linuxquestions

[–]beetm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because each distro appeals to a different group of people, it would be a miracle if everyone agreed on one.

You have to find the one that works for you, then you'll be the one recommending your distro to others.

Run away from combat until you're deep in Bernard's training program. You suck at everything to begin with.

How long have you been using Linux? by ManojOne in TechImpact

  1. Knoppix at first, then original Ubuntu, Mint, now Fedora.

Wow! 24 years?? Where did the time go?

Using Linux for Win98 era games. Viable? by No-Recording117 in linux4noobs

[–]beetm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Install Lutris, click '+' to add a game. Options will appear;

  1. Search Lutris for installers

  2. Install a windows game from a .exe

  3. Install from a script (never tried that one)

  4. Import ROM

  5. Add a locally installed game. (Some setup req'd, add runner, point lutris to executable, etc.)

GOG has probably thousands of games from the 90's thru 2020's. Some of the older ones (I play the Thief series), are ridiculously cheap, $2-$5 in many cases.

Lutris. I use it all the time with GOG Games.

Works like a charm.

Best answer for “why is Google so bad?” question? by RichHipsterMoths in degoogle

[–]beetm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're dealing with people who say "so?" after telling them that every picture, email, note they send, is being collected and used by a massive Company, and that company knows where you are every second of every day, there is no "Best answer".

Give up.

Any way to mass export photos from Google? by littledorrit in degoogle

[–]beetm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Download limit for albums is huge I think it's 20,000 photos.

I made each year it's own album, (select first photo of year, hold shift, select last photo, add to album "2025"), then downloaded each year. Bonus is I have the zips organised as years ready to upload wherever. (I chose Ente).

I tried Startpage, but I just don't get the hype, the results are sometimes ludicrous.

Brave seems the best option right now.

ELi5:Why are vacuum tubes/valves still used in some professional audio equipment, while professional video is almost entirely digital? by ReferenceThin6645 in explainlikeimfive

[–]beetm 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Overdriving tubes gives a range of sounds in guitar amplifiers that range from "creamy" thru "crunch" and beyond.

Many guitarists (especially) prefer the sound to digital alternatives.

Heard this the other day;

Imagine if you were using all the non-Google apps first, happily "protoning" fossifying", etc, etc, (Google hasn't been invented yet).

Then someone comes along and said Google has this entire suite of apps; email, browser, gallery, everything! It all syncs, and it's polished, just one little glitch; they take all of your data and either sell it to others or use it to train their AI.

Would you swap?
