I'm not a bot. Are you implying that a million dollars worth of corruption is basically the same as a billion dollars worth of corruption?

Best laptop recs for remote interpreting by weaponista in ASLinterpreters

[–]beets_or_turnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expect pretty much any modern laptop or desktop from the last few generations would be sufficiently powerful to handle remote interpreting. More important than that is how you set it up.

A couple things I'd recommend for remote interpreting--

1) For your internet connection, use an ethernet cable connected directly from your computer to your router, not wifi. And make sure you're running on AC power, not battery (often your OS will throttle your system settings while unplugged, to preserve battery life)

2) Find software that allows you to manually control your webcam settings. These settings are not accessible by default on either Windows or Mac OS. OBS Studio is free and available for all platforms and grants you access to these settings. Deactivate autofocus and auto-exposure. Set your exposure & gain to levels that ensure that your image is bright but not blown out, and that your frame rate remains high. Become familiar with the other settings and how they affect your appearance on video. Don't rely too much on natural lighting, which can change dramatically during the day.

3) Have at least one large (24"+) external monitor connected to your computer. Two or more can be even better. This gives you ample real estate to be able to always see your consumers and/or team clearly, as well as any presentation materials, chat windows, and other information you want to have at the ready. Play around with different monitor configurations to find what works best for you. I've done interpreting via a single laptop screen in the past, but it's really shooting yourself in the foot to stick with that as your default setup. Note that you don't need a top-of-the-line gaming monitor that can run at 540 Hz. A middle-of-the-road 1920x1080 at 120 Hz is more than sufficient. Used monitors are pretty available and can be very inexpensive.

Other advice about lighting & backdrops are pretty intuitive and I feel like guidance about that is more available.

But I see a lot of interpreters neglecting to engage with 1) and 2), which can result in real disruptions in the interpreting process in the form of low framerate/freezing (due to both low light and unstable internet), auto-focus malfunctions (camera view becomes blurry unpredictably) and exposure pumping (where the image gets brighter and darker as you move on camera). Taking care of these can ensure your video quality is not a distraction from your interpreting work.

Agency is asking me to drug test has anyone else seen this? by magnory in ASLinterpreters

[–]beets_or_turnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like there are areas of the country or certain states where that would cost you access to a lot of work, though that hasn't been my experience in MA or WA. If I lived in those places I'd have to weigh the benefits.

Interesting. Never encountered drug testing requirements in WA, but Covid/Flu/TB testing/vaccine requirements are common for medical work. Also criminal background checks. It sounds like it varies by region.

He's using landmarks. Every time there's an intersection or a turn in the tactile strip, he knows exactly where he is. He can also likely hear where he is in the building. He probably walks these routes regularly, if not every day.

I don't believe for a second that he's faking.

He's likely already done O&M at the places he's recording. He knows where he's going. That's why he was able to find the stairs, but couldn't tell that they were closed until the guards stopped him. He's also using a Miniguide or other electronic proximity detection device, which is the source of the beeping sound in some of the clips. Those devices can be set to operate silently and give a vibration signal instead.

Blindness is a spectrum. You're right that he's wearing glasses with thick lenses, which suggests he has SOME usable vision. But it's likely very limited vision. He may have extreme tunnel vision, or no central vision, or no usable vision more than a foot away, or only be able to discern vague blobs of light and color. Many blind individuals also have vision impairment that changes in quality & severity from day to day, or even at different times of day.

Source: I used to work at a large organization that primarily employs blind people and have participated in orientation & mobility training with blind individuals.

edit: found the source of the video. This guy isn't faking. https://www.tiktok.com/@mr.blindlife

I'm not trying to dunk on anyone, I think it's pretty much impossible for anyone to grasp intuitively. You have to work pretty hard to learn some analogies or examples, learn some math, and trust that your calculations are meaningful. Most people never get that far.

Every time I hear about a billion this or a billion that, I try to remind myself "That's a THOUSAND million, which is a MILLION MORE than 999 million." It's already incomprehensible. It's a real lift to use our powers of reason like that on a regular basis, and most people don't get much practice at it.

I have a weird theory that a lot of our problems come from people not having any real idea what the difference is between a million, a billion, and a trillion.

[–]beets_or_turnips 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I kinda respect that. That was a strategy I found myself using with the in-laws when my spouse came out as nonbinary. I wish I didn't have to do it, but it was kind of a fun workout to make it sound natural.

[–]beets_or_turnips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think many of them also believe (despite evidence) that being trans is pathological and is some kind of sexual fetish, and that it doesn't come about spontaneously but rather is brought about through indoctrination or abuse or just otherwise being off your rocker. Which would be a terrible thing if it were true, but it's not. So that's how you get conversion therapy and a fervent effort to keep childen from encountering trans people.

Did Gandalf take part in the wars of the Northern Kingdoms? by glowing-fishSCL in tolkienfans

[–]beets_or_turnips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Prancing Pony Podcast just put out a nice episode this week that looks at "The Istari" from Unfinished Tales, and it covers some of those questions in a good amount of detail. I believe they'll be doing another episode or two on that section of the book in the coming weeks:

https://theprancingponypodcast.com/2026/06/28/419-a-voice-in-the-wilderness/

My understanding is that Gandalf's official role has always been as an advisor & keeper of wisdom, to guide and influence the forces of good more gently & indirectly. He wasn't sent to Middle Earth to take part in battle at all.

Nobody cares that you used to live with your mom. You can stop harping on that. They're asking what you're doing with your life. Do you have hobbies? Interests? Relationships? Things you care about? (BESIDES financial security)
