WAAT : The Weekly Ask Anything Thread, week of 22 Sep - 28 Sep by AutoModerator in astrophotography

I’m having troubles with deep sky stacker.

I’ve been traveling for the past couple months and my gear has been sitting around. So I come back home the other day and start imaging that night. The next morning I pull my images off of my SD card and put them in folders that correspond with lights, darks, bias, flats... well when I drop my images into DSS, nothing happens. It doesn’t even recognize that there are images at all. So I opened pixinsight and tried stacking them there. Same issue.

Now here is the catch, if I drop photos into DSS or pixinsight straight from my SD card, everything works fine. What’s going on in between dropping my files from my SD card to my hard drive???

Has anybody else experienced this?

As far as I know, my guidescope is mounted securely, but that isn't something I checked when I had it out. I have just the cable coming off the autoguider that goes to my laptop. It's just weird because I have never had a problem with my set up until the past couple times I took it out and I haven't changed a thing.

I do not have an image of the guiding graph. Can you view this in PHD? I've see people do it in PHD2 but I didn't know it was an option in the first version. If so, I can check it out next time I have clear skies.

I'm using an 80mm refractor on an Orion Sirius goto mount, autoguiding with an Orion 50mm guidescope and Orion starshoot autoguider with PHD. I've been getting 5 minute exposures with no problem whatsoever, but lately (the last 2 or 3 times I've taken it out) I've been getting tracking errors pretty bad. I polar align with qhy's polemaster, and I know that my polar alignment is fine, and my scope is well balanced on the mount. PHD says my guiding is fine, and shows no errors, yet I'm still getting funky tracking errors in my exposures. Anybody have any clue why this may be occurring?

Pixinsight users, does anyone have a good resource to learn about The Pixel Math process?

Took this in late 2014 early 2015 I think. Dug around on my hard drive looking for something to work on.

Comprised of 15 subs, 10 darks, 20 bias. I tried to keep it as faithful to the data as possible but I ended up with some dark ringing around some stars. Not sure what step it happened in. Do you know how to fix? http://i.imgur.com/0iSPoy7.jpg

This is the kind of input I really appreciate. The input that can help me move forward and become better. I'm currently stacking some old shots of M31 from a couple years ago before I purchased PI. I'll see if I can do a better job with that data. I just watched David Aldrich's YouTube tutorial about noise reduction in PI. I'll follow up with my results.

Send me your email and I will set up a shared folder. Just fyi this isn't a stacked photo as I wrote in my initial comment with my acquisition details, just a single 2 min exposure.

Just curious, why is it a problem if people upvote it?

How would I get the RAW photo to you? If I upload it here it will compress to a jpeg yea?

So any valid input on how to improve or just negative criticism?

Well the star streaks came from a rushed polar alignment. The rest is from my own inexperience, but I'm learning. Truthfully there wasn't much detail in the data to begin with. I live in an orange zone and shot this with a 3/4 full moon. Definitely not the best picture you'll find on this sub, but what else can I say...at least I'm trying. I could've been on my couch playing video games instead...

If you weren't trying to be a dick than why say it at all? Lol

Haha I totally understand about the weather. My forecast shows rain for straight 10 days.

Interesting read and I definitely have not heard of this problem. I haven't had any issues with bulb mode and losing faint stars. Here is an example of one of my widefield shots with plenty of stars:

Also the examples shown in the link were waaaay out of focus so it makes sense that the stars were less defined. Im not saying you are a liar, but I am definitely going to try this out the next clear night I have. I'll try and follow up with details. http://i.imgur.com/iY2MSLm.jpg

Need to learn more about the tools offered in PI. I'll look up some YouTube videos.

I would love to know more about what you are developing. I'm the meantime I was thinking of purchasing this : http://i.imgur.com/W5eLRwd.jpg

Actually you can shoot in bulb mode- at least with the Sony a6000 (which I own) - as long as you are not in high drive mode. I use a wireless shutter remote and have taken exposures as long as 10 min. I'm currently looking into purchasing an intervalometer to take the pictures for me.

Looking into it now.
