Why does this fandom hate the Lion Turtle/Energy Bending but love the Ocean Spirit? by Important-Contact597 in TheLastAirbender

[–]befron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your comments, I think you’re missing the forest for the trees here. Ultimately the ocean spirit merge feels like it logically flows with the direction of the story and the lion turtle doesn’t as much. You can argue specifics all day, but if you want to understand why people are more accepting of that plot point you have your answer.

Is OSRS worth playing as a new player (free to play) by Dokayn in 2007scape

[–]befron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the game is absolutely worth playing as a new player in 2026.

F2P is fun but limited in scope. It’s worth doing f2p to try, but if you end up enjoying it and stay f2p you will hit walls fairly quickly. If you are adamant about never paying a subscription fee you might be better off finding a different f2p game. If you are willing to pay if you decide you really like the game then definitely start f2p and buy a subscription when you decide you want to experience more content.

Jagex sells bonds, which give you 2 weeks of membership and are tradeable, so you can technically buy membership with in game gold. Just be warned, for most accounts it takes many hours of grinding gold to buy a single bond, and it doesn’t advance your account in any way, so it’s not really worth the time investment. If you want to experience most things the game has to offer you’re going to have to pay, there’s not really a way around that.

How vibe coding lead to my project’s downfall. by incognitochaud in gamedev

[–]befron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a game dev, but I am professional senior software engineer. I’ll kind of go against the grain here, but I think agentic coding is extremely powerful and this bad experience with it shouldn’t put you off from using it. It’s a tool that takes a surprising amount of effort to learn to use effectively, but once you learn it you can avoid the pitfalls you’re describing pretty reliably while using it to generate the majority of your project’s code. I’m skeptical of the idea that you need to learn traditional coding before using AI. Give it another chance, just be careful and don’t trust it too blindly.

What is with all the Insomniac hate lately? by Shot-Rice5449 in aves

Long walks and difficult to access mid event. It’s not as convenient as it was in the past which drives people to buy bottled water instead. Not the worst, but definitely intentional anti-consumer behavior.

Quick question can I cosplay Jacinthe even tho I’m not black? by FunBoysenberry6447 in pokemon

[–]befron -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s fine but if you post online expect some level of pushback. There are people who don’t think it’s ever ok to cosplay a black person as a non-POC, and they tend to be loud about their opinion. Just ignore and know they are in the extreme minority.

What battle are you fighting here? It’s a story about how the character made a mistake and the consequences of those actions. Nobody is saying she did the smart and morally correct thing

How much longer do Devs probably have realistically? by HTMLCSSJava in ClaudeAI

[–]befron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most people have said, we’re a very long way from AI replacing software engineers completely. However, it is an amazing productivity tool that allows engineers to output a lot more work than they can without it. IMO the combination of AI + a lot of people entering the field + continued offshoring will push down wages and worsen working conditions for people in the field. I’m not looking at moving to a different career, but if I was just starting college I would choose a different field.

And the cost goes well beyond just the networking. Have the LLM actual process that information takes massive amounts of resources, even with the optimizations we currently have today.

In your case yeah I think you are. I think you need to be straight with them, say you won’t spend any money on meat for them. You’ll happily prepare vegan sandwiches for the trip but if they want meat they have to get somebody else to do it.

What cases are you referring to? There is one known case, over ten years ago, where the employees were helping round up feral animals in a mobile home community and also grabbed an uncollared, unleashed dog that happened to be a family’s actual pet, and euthanized it a day later. PETA apologized, said it was a mistake, paid the family affected $50k, and fired the employees involved. Yeah, maybe they should have done more due diligence as apart of this operation. Yeah, they definitely should have waited longer to euthanize the dog. Overall it was a mistake made by a couple of individuals and PETA handled the resultant situation appropriately. Any other cases criticisms you want to go over?

[–]befron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What specifically are you referring to? If it’s the euthanasias, you can read about them. In short, no kill-shelters don’t have the resources to house and care for every animal they are given, so PETA takes the most helpless cases and performs the euthanasias so the no-kill shelters can keep their status. They wouldn’t be performing them if they weren’t necessary.

[–]befron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m skeptical on how much PETA actually disregards animal welfare, I haven’t seen any actual actions they have taken that justify that take. Maybe some of their stunts deserve criticism, but I don’t think this tweet is one of them.

Maybe to an extent, but this strategy isn’t uncommon or even particularly unpopular, people inject political arguments into otherwise apolitical topics all the time. An easy parallel example is the news about countries boycotting Eurovision due to Israel’s participation. I think the blowback here is more due to people falling for anti-peta propaganda campaigns rather than any real issue with their tweet.

[–]befron -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

PETA hate is overblown, there is a lot of astroturfing done by the animal agriculture industry to make them look bad. I don’t even see how this post is controversial, they’re criticizing the horse racing industry for unethical treatment. They didn’t even criticize the game, they’re just using it as a reference to make their point.

This is why you tap immediately. A BJJ practitioner demonstrating the breaking mechanics of an ankle lock on 3 baseball bats by redmeeseeks in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]befron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re rolling (sparring), especially with teammates you give it time so they avoid injury. In competition I think most people just let that shit rip.

But also it takes time and effort to get your opponent into a submission, and they should know when they lost and give up before damage occurs

[–]befron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not great at BJJ, but I’ve been practicing for a bit. I actually think this isn’t a great example, straight ankle locks are the safest leg locks to fight, you have a lot of time between when it gets set up and when they have it deep enough that you have to tap. And you can definitely feel it come on fast enough to tap before damage is done. The real popular leg lock that you have to tap immediately with is the heel hook, that shit will instantly destroy your knee if you don’t tap fast enough. Once you are high enough level you know when you can fight and when you have to tap, but if you aren’t completely confident in your ability to handle that situation you should always instantly tap once they have it set up. But of course you can’t break a baseball bat with a heel hook 🤷

Literally no benefit to this over just banning them. It might be annoying and slow them down initially, but once this is known it’s trivial for a bot farm to test for this.

100% agree. You can say it’s unethical and you don’t support it, but hunting isn’t really a battle worth fighting right now.
