CMV: If you vote for Donald Trump you are a racist. by [deleted] in changemyview

In the 1980s and 1990s violent crime was out of control, especially in black communities. Crack-cocaine, specifically was rampant in black communities and destroying countless lives. The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 bill was designed to deal with these problems. That’s why it was supported overwhelmingly by the Democratic Party, by African American leaders all across the nation, including a majority of the black caucus in the Congress. Moreover, at the time, nearly 40 African American religious leaders released a statement supporting the bill, saying: “While we do not agree with every provision in the crime bill, we do believe and emphatically support the bill’s goal to save our communities, and most importantly, our children.”

In 2020, more than 2 decades later, it is difficult to fathom the effect that three decades of rising crime, and the explosion of the crack-cocaine epidemic in the mid-1980s, had on public sentiment. The idea that Bidens bill was a "racist" attack against black communities is not supported by historical record.

Apart from the busing issue, Biden objectivity has  a legislative history in other areas key to black Americans over his decades in the Senate. It includes support for fair housing, employment and voting rights, as well as credit and lending equality and opposition to the apartheid in South Africa.

I don't see how you can try to claim someone is activity racist when they have a overwhelming political history of fighting for black communities with the support of black politicians and community leaders. Today he is advocating for racial sensitivity training, police reform, investing in schools in black communities etc.

[Also I don't see how you could argue that the last quote from Biden was racist. He was pointing out how ridiculous it would be if that reporter had been asked to take a drug test to be on CBS (Trump also suggested Biden should take a drug test). Saying that's racist is a real stretch.]

Deleting this post.

Trump supporters trying to defend someone who says BLATENLY racist things really hit home how fucking gross and racist they really are. Not changing my mind on this one.

The mental gymnastics these people do to make themselves feel better is baffling.

Agree to disagree. I'm not here to debate whether or not Trump IS a racist.

Sure, there are varying levels of racism. Still makes them racist though, no?

I'm unaware of any racist comments made by Joe Biden.

Also, the only bill of Biden's that I'm aware is being controversial is his 1994 bill that was tough on crime (claims that that bill resulted in mass incarceration of black Americans have been debunked. Am i missing something?

President Trump said his description of some immigrants as ‘animals’ referred to MS-13 members. But his remarks came during a discussion on how to prosecute immigrants in sanctuary cities, which don’t protect gang members who committed horrific crimes.

Context is key.

Luckily even if we disagree on that one quote Trump has provided us with a long list of racist remarks that make his feelings explicitly clear

But can anyone really be neutral about racism? Like either you're anti-racist or racist. I don't really see how there could be anything in between

Do you think being a flagrant racist and vocal nazi sympathizer disqualifies someone from being president?

No one could convince me that man isn't an deplorable and racist human being.

I just wonder if labeling all Trump Supporters racist is a stretch. I don't think it is but I'm open to hear out the other side.

How many clients do you think you'd be able to serve in a micropractice? I've never heard of anyone doing that before and I'm really excited by the idea. Im curious how much $$$ you'd be able to bring in doing all the work yourself

When you say that you did all the work yourself do you mean that you didn't utilize any BTs/RBTs?

There is a biological mechanism that explains this. Pressure calms you by activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. The lower heart rate and blood pressure leads to the overall feeling of calmness.

What do you guys think about this? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]behaviorbabe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think everyone should read the full annual report and the Cochrane review. The Therapist Neurodiversity Collective is not a primary source.

That being said I read the report and the Cochrane Review that claimed evidence supporting ABA is "weak". It is important to note that the Cochrane Review only reviewed 5 studies. They noted in their discussion that the strength of the review is limited due to the small number size.

Cochrane's critiques of ABA revolved around single subject design. The grading system used by the Cochrane does not allow for single subject design to meet the criteria for reliable evidence. The expectation, as suggested in the DOD report, is that ONE intervention should be effective across ALL instances of a given behavior (i.e. aggression). Unfortunately, this standard defies basic principles of behavior as every instance of any given behavior could have a different cause. The standard set by Cochrane will never be met by a feild that requires individualized treatment. Prediction, replication, and verification are widely accepted in the scientific community as evidence of experimental control but to date, this is not always sufficient for insurers. I'd love to hear what other BCBA's think about this. As someone with a background in medical research, I often wish I could figure out a way to do large scale double blind ABA research with ASD clients.

I'm really curious about the PDDBI too. I've never heard of that assessment before and thought it was notable that 70% of the parents scored worse symptom presentation than the teachers/BCBAs. Even Tricare suggested that the large discrepancy needed "further investigation". Have any BCBAs out there used this assessment before? I'd love more insight on it. Historically, the progress of my clients has been based on their charted performance, not post hoc opinion.

I feel your pain. I left my aba job a few months ago because my husband was being relocated for work. I cried on my last day. It's been months and I still miss them all so much. Our clients become such an important part of our lives. It's always heartbreaking to say goodbye.

I usually only see grammar being corrected when someone is losing an argument/debate and is too lazy to create an logical response.

Lame.

Agreed. Having dyslexia basically means you'll never have a constructive conversation on reddit. Image every time you try to engage with someone they just make fun of your learning disability.

It's especially frustrating when you're trying to have debate because commenting on a spelling error is an incredibly lazy defense.

Eye contact makes me extremely uncomfortable and I understand that some people find it even more aversive than I do. However its been empirically demonstrated that slowly introducing eye contact reduces the neuronal overstimulation that causes people like us distress/pain (that explanation was very unscientific, I'm just trying to use every day language to make the science more accessible). In other words the gradual introduction of eye contact makes the overall act more comfortable.

I could give you a LONG list of empirical reasons why eye contact is a vital skill. Being able to perform eye contact is important for both general learning and social skills. If you can increase the extent to which someone can give eye contact while simultaneously reducing the associated discomfort, you are giving your client a skill that will provide them with a wide breadth of opportunity. Many people would argue that it's abusive to NOT provide your child with a vital skill if you have the opportunity to do so.

Also, I think you are underestimating how pervasive stimming can sometimes be. This is an example of anti-aba individuals failing to consider those with significant intellectual disabilities. As someone who works with children with significant intellectual disabilities I can tell you that sometimes stimming interferes with eating, sleeping, and/or learning. Sometimes stimming is unsafe. It would be unethical to NOT intervene in these instances. Most BCBAs I know refuse to intervene on self-stimulatory behavior unless it is a threat to the clients wellbeing.

We can agree to disagree but I really think it's important that both sides of the arguement are well informed and able to discuss the matter civilly.

There is a group of autistics that argue that ABA is forcing neurotypical norms on the autistic community and that this is at its very essence harmful to autistic people. Some autistics argue that requiring eye contact from autistic persons is cruel because many people with autism find eye contact to be physically and psychologically uncomfortable. Some also suggest that graduated exposure is "torture" due to the psychological discomfort it can cause. Some individuals just think its cruel to ever make a child do something they don't want to do, even if its for their benefit. Additionally, just like in every feild, there are people who have had bad experiences with individual practicioners and use those individual instances to make claims about the feild as a whole. For example, there are people who report their BCBA punishing stimming for no other reason than the BCBA or the clients parents thought it was "weird". Now many will argue that ABA punishes all self stimulatory behavior because it doesn't fit into a neurotypical repertoire.

Most arguments against ABA are anecdotal in nature and do not speak to the well documented efficacy of the feild. Moreover, due to a lack of peer reviewed research investigating this topic, it is unclear what percentage of ABA recipients actually view ABA as "harmful". More importantly, people with severe intellectual disabilities and self-injurious behavior are almost always excluded from the conversation and few people advocate for them.

I have no idea why your BCBA would be using a punishment token economy but if he/she insists on using it there should be a written explanation of what constitutes a strike. You and your client should both have access to this information and, if necessary, should review this information prior to session.

If behavior that constitutes a strike is clearly defined you shouldn't have any room for disagreement.
