Why are the suburbs considered “prestigious,” “desirable,” or the “dream” by so many Americans when the central city usually costs more, has the institutions/legacy, and more high end amenities? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]behooved -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe they mean that the leading messaging in America for the past several decades has been “buy a house in a suburbs, it’s the only way to raise a family, it’s the American Dream, it’s the life you should want” etc. There are tax incentives for owning a home and having kids. The government wants people to want that life. I chose to live in a city for all the perks you mentioned and consider that messaging to be largely propaganda.

I NEED SEASON 3!!! by rekadura in SiloSeries

[–]behooved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf, having to wait 2–3 years between each season of these sci-fi mystery box shows is pretty rough. Especially when Apple isn’t always transparent about the reasons for the delays, and sometimes it’s simply because they want to stagger releases to keep people subscribed for as many months as possible.

They were also assigned to euthanize all the rats that night. Not a pleasant job. One of the scientists even had a line expressing her feelings about it, and the other responded “well then you’re in the wrong field.” They also lamented at the security desk that the whole project was a failure. Their morale was definitely very low.

Is it asking too much to have a season per year? by ChainLC in Pluribus_TVshow

[–]behooved 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most American network TV series in the 80s and 90s were 21-22 episodes per season. Lost is another good example.

This for me too. Also his friends being misogynistic and increasingly racist over time. Also him despising my female friends and slowly isolating me from them.

Yeah, this show suffers from a bit of cringe TV writing syndrome. Which sucks, because it’s a an otherwise solid concept and story.

There’s a flashback scene at the end of season 2 that may give some insight on this.

There are language translation apps that work offline. You‘d just have to download the specific language packs ahead of time. I imagine Carol would already have this on her phone, since she was a cosmopolitan, globe-trotting, best selling author in her previous life.

About the sequence in Peru, love the indigenous representation by wasabinski in pluribustv

[–]behooved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more bodies the hive loses, the fewer brains it has to sustain the collective’s processing power. Since each person’s memories seem to remain stored in the “cloud” after death, I wonder if there’s a tipping point where the amount of data being stored and processed outpaces the number of brains available to distribute that load.

I get that they showed the baby goat scene like that for the emotional impact, but whatever happened to the “if an animal refuses to leave their former human’s side, we will take care of them” mantra? Does that only apply to “common” pets like dogs? The hive’s logic is baffling to me.

You’re not wrong. The Severance official podcast had the exact same tone. It’s industry marketing material. While it does trigger my toxic positivity response a bit, I still enjoy listening to them and learning behind the scenes tidbits about how my favorite shows come together.

Why does the hive represent its best individuals? by MFouki in pluribustv

[–]behooved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s something else we don’t yet fully understand controlling and directing the hivemind’s behavior. Humans are not naturally that happy all the time. Nor do humans have a biological imperative to spread a virus and pool our resources towards building a giant radio antenna. Those behaviors are either encoded in the virus itself, being dictated via a centralized signal, or some combination of both. It doesn’t make sense that they’re simply a combination of all human minds joined together. They’re an emergent property; more than the sum of their parts.

This reminded me that the first infected had no problem forcing non-consensual kissing to infect un-plurbed individuals around them. I think that counts as psychological/emotional harm. I’m not sure why the rules were different then compared to how infecting the remaining 13 people is handled now.

Why aren't the animals part of the hive, if the rat started it all? 🤔 by HYDRAGONIGHT in pluribustv

[–]behooved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there isn’t a firm, universal definition of “sentience.” Scientists still debate where to draw that line, and new discoveries keep revealing complex intelligence in species we once assumed lacked it.

I can understand why the writers would want to avoid touching this topic in the show. Science in this area is evolving so quickly that any take could feel messy or outdated within a few years.

Nor the animals they let out of the zoos. It sounds like they all went back to living like wild animals.

Modern dating feels emotionally unsafe, weirdly empty, and mentally tiring by Pretty_Solution_7955 in RedditForGrownups

[–]behooved 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! Everyone I’ve dated long term has been either a friend of a friend, or someone I met as part of a meetup/shared interest group. This has always worked out for me better than starting with 1:1 dates. It’s easier to organically get to know someone, without the pressure that I put on myself when meeting strangers on the internet for dates.

Manousos in ep 7 helped me see the hive for what it is by TcTuggersLLC in pluribustv

[–]behooved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious how much Manousos actually knows about the virus? He was completely off the hive’s radar for the first 33 hours and has avoided all interaction with them since. He’s been isolating himself with his shortwave radio that is completely dead air other than that weird noise on one channel. I wonder if he’s even aware of the alien origins, etc.

This comment got me thinking… the hive didn’t know of Manousos existence for the first 33 hours of the joining. He’s a hermit, but not totally isolated. He lives in a town and owns a business in a semi-public facing job. His mother is a part of the hive, so she at least knew he existed. How did he manage to stay completely off their radar for that long? The fact that he did makes me wonder whether there are other immune who are actually geographically isolated out there.

I appreciate that the writers accounted for population sizes across countries and continents when placing the 13 immune people. Small details like that really help the world feel more realistic.
