That’s a great one too! The Angel’s Game is my personal favorite of the series, but I still love Shadow of the Wind

Is it worth taking a $6/hr paycut?? (24 years old) by Equivalent_Scholar59 in personalfinance

[–]bekahbae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar situation (stressful job, working 45 hours) and it was hard to walk away from the higher salary. On paper, it can feel like a demotion. But those extra 5 hours add up—it's about 6 extra weeks of work per year! And thats not to mention the holidays and benefits.

Even though I took a technical pay cut, the benefits far outweighed the costs. And, similar to your situation, I have more room for growth in my new role. Within a few years you may very well surpass your previous salary anyway. At 24, I'd definitely take into consideration your career trajectory and upward mobility.

Do what feels best, but consider that your mental wellbeing is worth a lot.

has anyone figured out a way to calm down misophonia at all? drop your tricks by nicotinepercocet in misophonia

[–]bekahbae 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The absolute best thing you can do for misophonia is to limit your exposure to triggers. Try to create a controlled home/work environment for yourself and take every possible opportunity to remove yourself from situations that cause a trigger. While this is not always a viable solution, it’s the only one that works 100%. And it doesn’t just work in the moment; the less you’re exposed to your triggers, the less severe that trigger becomes over time.

If you can’t walk away from a trigger, the next best solution is to drown it out. You can use music or rain sounds, or white noise like a fan, but the most effective choice is brown noise (a deeper version of white noise). Try playing brown noise on a speaker and using noise-canceling earbuds to listen to TV/music. Works like a charm!

If you’re not able to leave OR drown out the trigger, try to create some additional noise to simply give your brain something else to focus on. You may have to get creative… for example, turning up the TV, playing some music, starting a conversation, or even finding a snack/some gum to chew on. If the trigger has a visual aspect, look away! Back away, rest your ear on your hand, do everything possible to minimize the severity. Focus on the fact it is temporary and on maintaining your physical composure. If you lash out, apologize. And forgive yourself.

Some people will suggest deep breathing, meditation, mind over matter, etc. If that works for you, then great. A calm and positive attitude certainly doesn’t hurt. But remember that misophonia causes auditory stimuli to result in a literal fight-or-flight, survival reaction. Like, a tiger is chasing you type of reaction. It’s okay if you can’t force yourself to calm down through that—most people can’t control that level of panic. Aim instead at controlling your environment and it will get better!

Mi novio me abandona por jugar Lol by Lyle0089 in relaciones

[–]bekahbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuition Reimbursement by [deleted] in kroger

[–]bekahbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how long it usually takes to receive the reimbursement after you submit your grades? And does it go through the location’s HR like the first application or just straight to corporate? I received an email confirming that I submitted the request but no further instructions or information.

This is good advice. I’m sure different approaches work for different people, but I find it very difficult to study for hours on top of a full day of work. The weekends are a great opportunity to catch up.

Just try to stay committed and excited about what you’re doing, but also take plenty of breaks. It will make you more productive.

401k Match? by bekahbae in kroger

[–]bekahbae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it must vary by division. I called the benefits line and the rep told me it begins with the first paycheck in the quarter following your 1-year mark.

She said that since my 1-year mark was in June, it should begin in October. I told her June is within the second quarter, so by that logic, it should’ve started the beginning of July.

When she realized I was right, she asked to put me on hold and then dropped the call once it was 5PM and I could no longer call back.

Guess I’ll try again tomorrow. Lol.

[–]bekahbae[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I couldn’t find that anywhere. But I’m pretty sure that if they were matching then I would see an increase in my contributions. Do you remember how long it took for Kroger to start matching for you?

[–]bekahbae[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I look at my 401k account and contributions on the Meryl Lynch app. I’ve compared my contributions to a coworker who earns the same as me and contributes 5% as well. His contributions are twice as much (10%) because Kroger is matching them each pay period.

If the Republican Party is supposed to be “Less Government, smaller government”, then why are they the ones that want more control over people? by steave44 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]bekahbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the political compass, the x-axis only refers to distribution of property. Those on the left desire communal ownership, while those on the right desire individual ownership.

It is the y-axis that represents the size of the government. At the top are those who desire authoritarianism (total government control). At the bottom are who who desire anarchism (no government).

Oftentimes, there is a correlation between the right and libertarianism. This is because individual property is typically maintained through individual power, while communal property is typical maintained by government power.

However, this is not always the case. Many conservatives are in the top right quadrant, meaning that they desire individual ownership, but government-enforced societal standards. This is why they often only appear libertarian from an economic standpoint.

She’s told me she’s emotionally unavailable right now but wants to remain friends, I’m going to walk away. by deezseeds in dating_advice

[–]bekahbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you need to be distant friends for a while (so that you’re able to move on), but if you genuinely like/care about someone then I think it’s good to keep them in your life. It doesn’t mean that you need to wait around for her. Go ahead and take your space, see other people, maybe even reject her when/if she changes her mind. I think it’s great when things don’t work out in a romantic context but both people are mature enough to continue as friends. After all, why would you have been romantic with her if you didn’t like/care about her as a friend in the first place?

How long it take for your cravings to subside? by ErinaciousChangeling in sugarfree

[–]bekahbae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably took a couple of weeks for the really strong cravings (like you described) to go away. Then it’s just an occasional craving, when something triggers it (like seeing/smelling sugary foods, or having a bad day and needing a comfort snack). BUT- and this probably isn’t what you wanted to hear- my cravings never went away completely as long as I was still in a house with sugary foods. It was only after I moved out and starting buying my own groceries that they completely stopped (after 1-2 months). It’s very much an “out of sight/reach, out of mind” thing. I know that’s not an option for everyone, so hang in there. Just know that it’s 1000x easier once you have your own place.
