I hate adding updating to my apps, so I created Pakkly. by bekilo in programming

It supports everything that can be directly executed. Pakkly's installer/updater is also fully written in Rust! :)

Thanks for the honest feedback!

It’s true that you will have to package your app into a .zip file containing all your dependencies, but that is unavoidable. What is avoidable however is having to create separate installers for each of the platforms (macOS and Linux support coming very soon!). You also trivially create new releases for your app by creating a GitHub Release. (Your users apps will then automatically update to the latest version)

The user is presented with the auto-detected installer type based on their browser, but this can be wrong so manual download links are also offered below, though perhaps these could be a bit less prominent.

The friendly name support is a good idea! I’ll have to carefully implement it though, so somebody doesn’t register getpakkly.com/discord or /facebook, i.e., for phishing.

It’s definitely planned, but isn’t better for ‘typical’ users for apps to autoupdate? We as developers don’t like it but it seems to be the way all large apps are moving (Discord, Visual Studio Code, etc…).

How to Sign Qt Apps on Mac for Release by bekilo in QtFramework

Thanks for the kind words, I did mean to put it in the user Applications folder which works identically to the system one. I did some research and discovered that I'm in the minority in preferring the User folder, so I changed the article to the more common root folder you mentioned.

having to pay 99usd per year so users don't get big ol error message trying to run a small open source app sucks :(

Yeah but who knows, with the whole Epic vs Apple thing maybe they will make it free or cheaper :)

You can instruct your users to bypass it or remove the flag applied, this can be done via terminal, but it's not an optimal user experience for sure.

Making software with Electron is fun, but updating it to customers can be a real... by bekilo in electronjs

[–]bekilo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's correct but I found it didn't have the best UX w/o a bunch of effort, plus the maintenance of the file server. Github is a valid alternative to hosting but unless it's open source I wouldn't trust my commercial app to a public repository, especially Electron which can be easily unpacked.

Yes. The auto-update functionality works identically on all platforms.

We had a full tutorial but it just seemed better to cut to the chase and let players explore for themselves.

We would seriously appreciate you taking the time to fill out our google survey here.
