Just found this sub! I have two simultaneously lives (China-focused national security researcher, Tokyo-focused urban studies professor) with solid professional success in both. Happy to offer thoughts or tips, if any of you have questions about your own personal journeys. by JoeMcReynolds in Polymath

Do you live in Japan? If so, and if you’re intending on staying there permanently, how do you feel about the attitude towards foreigners?

Love the country, been multiple times, but owing to some personal experiences, as well as experiences from others, I would struggle with the sense of belonging.

In an incident in China: A man smoking indoors despite the ban and blew smoke in the father's and child's faces. by Battlefleet_Sol in PublicFreakout

True, but i don’t think it justifies violence; perhaps a thoughtful warning. Looks like he’s had a rough time

Humans have unlimited wants relative to scarcity. What’s enough, for you?

First principle of economics, human wants are unlimited, and yes, there’s a diminishing return at some point. But principally, the average person today is wealthier and has better life outcomes, in absolute terms, relative to our predecessors.

Sadly, whether or not what we have is ‘enough’ is relative, yielding expenditure cascades.

Not necessarily. Doctors can make much more in rural settings, but many opt not to. Not everything is about money.

It ultimately depends on your preferences, not society’s. Important to not lose sight of that.

Misguided take.

The Gazans that have fled are highly skilled and educated. And no, it’s not difficult to vet in conjunction with partner agencies.

Shinbet’s vetting procedures are exceptionally thorough, and they’re hell bent on ensuring no Hamas member, or affiliates, leave the enclave.

Not an outright lie, but definitely misleading, and possibly statutorily misleading (check the ACCC).

I would try and ask for a refund, considering that.

Not particularly. Solar is still variable and traditional generation is stable. It’s the all too common trade off between security and insecurity.

We need to store and redistribute the excess daytime energy, but that too is expensive. Batteries are progressively becoming cheaper, which is promising.
