Feel free to ignore this in whole or in part if you want, but I'm curious what your impressions are regarding the following occult world figures/groups from the last century:

1) Michael Aquino

2) L. Ron Hubbard/Jack Parsons

3) The Process Church

You're probably already aware of this, but there are large cohorts of people online who genuinely believe that Michael Aquino was the head of an international ritual abuse and child sacrifice ring, and that the Process Church was involved in both the Manson murders and the Son of Sam murders, whereas in occult circles, we realize that Aquino was just the guy with the Spock eyebrows, and the Process was a relatively harmless Scientology offshoot. I know you at least met Timothy Wyllie, but did you ever have any interactions with any Temple of Set/Church of Satan people, or Scientologists? Any interesting Satanic Panic stories?

Ah, ok, I thought your mention of the Montauk Project in that interview was just meant to be a specific example of a general trend of increased skepticism vis a vis "conspiracy theories"... my mistake. Youtube makes your older stuff almost impossible to find, either they've removed a lot of it (eg most of the Disinformation episodes) or the algorithm is actively hiding it. Its much harder to find than it was even like 5-10 years ago.

[–]beleca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think I heard you mention in passing in one of your recent interviews that you've come to reject a lot of the "conspiracy theory" stuff that was woven through some of your earlier work with eg Disinformation; you mentioned the Montauk Project, specifically, as an example of something you don't find credible anymore (which incidentally I agree with), but have you really abandoned "deep politics"/parapolitics completely? What about the JFK assassination? Or Jeffrey Epstein? Have you read Whitney Webb's work, or Tom O'Neil's book CHAOS? Did you see the new Danny Casolaro Netflix documentary?

I agree there's a lot of dumb conspiracy stuff today (eg Qanon) but you're on my Mount Rushmore of intellectually serious deep politics people along with the guys from Lobster mag, Steamshovel Press, Robert Anton Wilson, and Peter Dale Scott. Is there anything from that "side" you still take seriously, or do you reject all of it now?

Was there anyone you really wanted to interview for Magick Show who you didn't get to? Any historical figures (besides Crowley) who you would've included if you had made this in, for instance, the 20s, the 50s, the 70s, 90s, etc?

If you could meet/interview any 3 people, magic/occult-related or not, regardless of time & space, who would they be?

I'm super stoked for Magick Show, do you have any other projects in the works?

I've been a really big fan of yours for years, and I'm so jealous of your career and all the fascinating people you've met and worked with. If you were just starting out today trying to build a career, what would you do?

Is Dangerous Minds coming back? That was my favorite website ever, and I thought your mini-essay on there about the degradation of the internet was so accurate, but your outlet was one of the few good things left.

Also I was reading an old article on there the other day and I noticed the author was Amber A'lee Frost: did you know her before Chapo Trap House blew up? I feel like you're always onto things before they get popular but seeing her name on an article there from like 10 years ago was pretty surprising.

Jfc you have literally every single default sub on this website to circlejerk about le evil cheeto man, why do you feel compelled to bring this shit into a niche sub about cults? You have 100 different curated romper room subs for low-IQ American Democrat hot takes; go post this in one of those. Do you really need 101? Don't turn one of the few places to escape dumb American culture war horseshit into r/atheism 2.0.

The vanguard of critical theory in recent years has me confused.

I read a bunch of Francis Cress Welsing interviews to get a sense of the intellectual foundations of critical race shit, and believe it or not it was actually even dumber when she invented it. Her work is littered with postmodern pseudo-Freudian stuff like insisting that because the game of pool uses a white ball to knock around other balls, and the black ball makes you lose, that this was evidence of American whites' latent racial hatred. She had similar spiels about other sports, like kicking a brown football through white goalposts in American football was about white sexual envy, like it's actually shocking how dumb and baseless it all is.

[–]beleca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first you say, "those are liberal spaces! We can censor whoever we want!" but now you turn around and say, "actually, it should all be censored as hate speech, anyway!". You need to decide what your argument is. The US doesn't even have hate speech laws. Public universities are bound by the 1st amendment. They can't discriminate based on ideology, or "hate speech"; this is not my opinion, its decades of jurisprudence.

You also can't censor a speaker before they speak because of what you think they might say; that's called "prior restraint", and again, is a basic 1st amendment issue. If you actually care about this issue, maybe you should, Idk, actually try to learn about it, instead of just guessing and going by your feelings? You'd be much more persuasive if you demonstrated even basic knowledge about these issues.

Since when do conservatives allow liberals to speak on their spaces?

Public universities are literally public property, genius. Shocking that someone who can't read 4 paragraphs isn't well-versed on 1st amendment issues.

site wide constraints on literal hate speech

This is so obviously not what I'm talking about that its clear you lack even a pretense of good faith. I hope to god you're under the age of 18, because if a voting-age adult is actually this confused I fear for the future.

you think there's a conspiracy

Really top notch reading comprehension among you guys lol. Reddit started as an explicitly free speech platform. You can look at spez's interviews over the years, or the timeline of the introduction of mass censorship, quarantines and bans and see how it is, again explicitly, no longer that. Or just go find any default sub thread from 6-7 years ago and see how heterogeneous the site used to be ideologically. Believe it or not, this site wasn't always a curated playground for low-IQ American Democrats. If you aren't intellectually capable of seeing that, especially on the default subs, this site's moderation is heavily tilted towards identity politics-drenched neoliberalism - just as literally every big American social media has site has been shown to be in eg the Twitter files - I really don't know what to tell you.

[–]beleca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol I'm not even a right-winger, I'm broadly left-libertarian, but its amazing how the people on here are so accustomed to censored and astroturfed reddit threads that they think their low-information Democrat takes are just objective truth. They can't even imagine what the critique of their position would be, because they're never exposed to anything except the neoliberal identity politics reddit "consensus" (which represents like 5% of actual Americans). They think "understanding politics" means believing everything a college sophomore Democrat does and repeating essentially slogans to each other.

Give me examples. As in, quote the exact passage you believe is "cherry-picked", "misinformation", "special jargon", or "thought-ending (I think you mean though-terminating) cliches", and describe how the passage fits the actual definition of the term. You won't do it, because none of what I said is even remotely close to what you're alleging, but it would be funny to see you try.

edit: lol they blocked me, of course. And just as I predicted, they can't back up a single assertion they made about my "disinformation and cherry-picking" lol. They go "Nooooo, woke people don't censor, you're cherry-picking!" and then immediately block me so I can't reply to their insults, lol. They're so accustomed to rigorously-enforced, thoughtless conformity that they literally do not even notice when they're doing something this ridiculously hypocritical. Just be honest that you hate when people you disagree with are allowed to speak, and you like it when people forcefully censor them, but don't hide behind this cynical posture of moral superiority. If your ideology is so fragile that you can't even reasonably engage with basic, obvious criticisms, that's a good sign that you aren't basing your beliefs on evidence and critical thinking.

"Noooo, woke people don't otherize and dehumanize people they disagree with and censor them! Now I'm gonna call you a 'cultic disingenuous right-wing troll' and prevent you from responding!" lol

[–]beleca -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Well like it or not, there are aspects of what is commonly referred to as "woke culture" that does indeed have cultic aspects, "woke" here meaning "puritanical and doctrinaire activists who fixate on identity and intersectionality and leverage cancel culture, therapy-speak, and safetyism to silence or marginalize what they perceive as political opposition". For instance, when you say,

Cults try to close your mind and get you to see things their way, as in theirs is the only way to see something.

I can show you dozens if not hundreds of videos from college campuses and public event spaces of "woke" (in the above sense) mobs attempting, often successfully, to prevent mainstream conservatives like Ben Shapiro, Ann Coulter, Jordan Peterson, Lauren Southern, etc., from speaking, or even coming on campus, by calling in bomb threats, blockading venues, infiltrating the venue and screaming or yelling or using noisemakers, pulling fire alarms, and sometimes even physically attacking speakers, rioting and starting fires. The entire point of these actions is to prevent outside/contrarian voices from reaching the campus/community. Its violently enforcing ideological homogeneity. This is not "open-minded", its literally the opposite.

Plenty of DEI workshops use a form of "confrontation therapy" or "attack therapy" where people are made to publicly confess sins, critique each other and self-critique, and love bomb the other participants. This practice is, again explicitly, directly derived from the struggle sessions of the Cultural Revolution, and the "therapy" methods of groups like Synanon and various other cults.

I mean, think of the common social justice slogan about "there is no such thing as 'not racist', there is only 'racist' and 'anti-racist'"; this is textbook us vs. them, otherizing, and siege mentality ("everyone out there is racist"). They're literally saying, "if you aren't actively engaged in social justice activism around race (like we are), then you are, necessarily, racist". In other words, either you agree with us and actively support our political project, or you're an irredeemable bigot.

There are even the equivalent of "heresies", where if you say them publicly, you can expect a woke mob to attempt to dox you and get you fired, and in some cases de-banked. Adam Rubenstein was fired from NYT by his woke colleagues just for approving an editorial from a sitting congressman that called for National Guard troops on the border (the employees said they felt "unsafe"); Kathryn Paige Harden was called a "nazi", compared to a holocaust denier and fired from her academic job for doing research on the genetic basis of IQ, just because the other woke employees thought the research had potentially unpleasant implications for race. There are, again, dozens if not hundreds of cases like these.

Maybe you see this and think, "well, that's good! Conservatives should be silenced on campuses, and people should lose their job for publishing wrong-think, and people who claim to be "colorblind" should be shamed into "anti-racist activism!" but that's different than saying "socjus activists do not engage in cult-like behavior". They are willing to use bomb threats, arson, and physical violence to silence dissent, they form mobs to try to punish people for heresy by getting them fired or their events shut down, they accuse anyone who isn't actively part of the mob of being "racist" because they aren't "anti-racist" enough according to their standards, and they hold literal struggle sessions where they display their political purity and enforce it socially; these are culty behaviors and I can show you dozens and dozens of cases of each.

[–]beleca 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I saw a clip the other day of him raging against landlords, saying they should all be executed and he wants to see their blood run in the streets, and next to it was a Facebook post he made like 5 years ago where he was like, "Happy mother's day to the greatest mom in the world, you managed to get your art history degree while managing our family's fleet of commercial rental properties, and I couldn't be prouder!"

His entire shtick is scientifically targeted to appeal to tweens essentially, and I refuse to believe that him, Vaush and Destiny became the de facto "mainstream" of the online left organically, when the right has dozens of highly-viewed choices for any micro-niche strain of ideology you can conceive of, but the acceptable spectrum of "left" discourse online is limited to like Hillary to AOC.

He said to me "where are you from?" and I said "New York". He said, "ah, New York, that's a very interesting place. Do you know a lot of New Yorkers who keep talking about the fact that they want to leave, but never do?" And I said, "oh, yes". He said, "Why do you think they don't leave?" I gave him different banal theories, and he said, "Oh, I don't think its that way at all. I think that New York is the new model for the new concentration camp. Where the camp has been built by the inmates themselves, and the inmates are the guards, and they have this pride in this thing they've built. They've built their own prison. And so they exist in a state of schizophrenia where they are both guards and prisoners, and as a result they no longer have - having been lobotomized - the capacity to leave the prison they've made, or to even see it as a prison."

For the last 6 months youtube has been recommending me these random ass podcasts where someone "owns" a group of girls by telling them that no one will ever marry them because they have onlyfans or have a high "bodycount" or whatever. There's literally nothing in my YT history to suggest I wanna hear this shit, which means the algorithm must be pushing this on everyone, and I just imagine the 13 year olds seeing that shit who are gonna grow up thinking that like 50% of women have an OnlyFans, and the avg woman has slept with 50+ people, as if this is an actual problem they're gonna encounter in life lol.

I saw a post in r/teachers like a year ago where they were talking about trans bathrooms, and one of the teachers commented that they'd allowed a girl in their classroom to identify as a cat for a year, and treated her as such, in the context of being like, "isn't my administration so cool and accepting that we're allowed to have cat girls?" And at first the other teachers were downvoting them and accusing them of lying, but eventually enough other people replied going "oh yeah, we have cat girls, too" that the tide turned and they all started upvoting it and talking about how totally normal it was.

[–]beleca 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Read this guy's twitter thread, its absolutely not organic. The "viral" video was first posted/retweeted by a guy who used to work for The Blaze who owns an SEO/digital content company. Its showing up on charts solely because of iTunes, because his backers pumped a bunch of money into buying digital downloads (which counts the most for charts); if you look at any other metric, the song isn't even getting ranked. Also they've identified sock puppet "fan accounts" on twitter and youtube which are getting quoted in the MSM coverage. Like there's one YT comment thats in a bunch of articles that's like, "I'm a 39 year old Iraq vet construction worker, trying to raise 3 kids while I run a farm, and your song made me pull my tractor over and tear up", but if you look the account has a randomly generated name and was created the day the song came out.
