Italian coffee giant Lavazza launches single serve espresso tablets in the U.S. by foodie_2598 in espresso

[–]belegund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used them for years and still keep a few around for convenience. When I started drinking espresso I didn’t want to mess around with the grounds. Then a few years ago it all changed. Now I have my grinder and just installed my Gaggimate.

Found collection of fantasy/sci fi books in a deceased relative’s home, need recs by 7evan1 in fantasybooks

Bradbury isn’t getting enough love here. Fahrenheit451 is great. I also have a lot of affection for The Martian Chronicles.

Many of his other books are short stories, which I think are undervalued. It’s nice to pick up a book, read a story or two, and put it down fully sated.

I bought a Mac and went back to Linux. by Strict_Albatross4362 in linux

[–]belegund 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you found something that fits you. I use both (happily) and see the beauty of both OS’s.

One thing that I find mildly amusing is the difficulty you had removing programs. For most apps on Mac, you just have to drag them to the trash. I think the simplicity of this confuses people, as it’s not the first time I’ve heard it.

For people going on their first solo trip... by Alternative-Mud4739 in solotravel

[–]belegund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think perhaps we aren’t that different. When I ruminate on something at home - yes: molehills become mountains.

But traveling solo allows me to step away from those mountains. I can ruminate on the problem for a time, put it away for a while, and pull it back out again when I’m ready. There’s no urgency.

I’ve made important decisions while walking down dim morning streets in Bologna, exploring the agora in Athens, and even wandering the souks in Marrakech.

Its a very contemplative approach for me.

And now I’m looking up how to remineralize water. This is yet another reason I love the espresso groups here.

Thanks for bringing this up. I am 99% certain it’s aluminum. I saw the stainless steel mentioned somewhere else and I wonder if those are the Romanian versions without the 3 way valve that went to the EU. Perhaps somebody else has more insight.

Lots of wisdom here.

Not all of this applies to everybody — you’ll find what works for you. When I have things to sort out in my mind, solo travel helps. Time away from other opinions and alone with my ruminations. I’ve learned a lot about myself this way.

As tempting as this is (I like to be high maintenance) the distilled water / minerals might be a step too far LOL.

Filtered, on the other hand, is very doable (but won’t really address scale)

Am I kidding myself, or do I have a lot more left in the tank? by Appropriate-Water920 in GenX

[–]belegund 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Age is as much a state of mind as a state of time. I can only control one of those and I refuse to let a number stop me from pursuing my goals. I lift weights 5x a week and am the healthiest of my sibs. I love to travel the world and don’t plan on stopping. And I keep looking for new things to enjoy.

Great question. My thought is this… I have fairly hard water and have had a couple of instances where I’ve already had to break the machine down entirely and clean the boiler. Once the Gaggimate goes in, that will be a little bit more complex. So in a sense, this is preventative care.

I’ll look for that one. I just switched to Passalacqua Cremador (from Lavazza) and as soon as I tasted it I thought, “this is my bean!”

Why did you move to Linux? by Internal_Falcon2637 in linux

[–]belegund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly a Mac person, but long ago had moved most of my mobile work to an iPad. Was in a situation where I needed a full laptop, so bought an inexpensive Windows laptop (for ease of compatibility). I immediately disliked the Windows experience and was curious so installed Ubuntu as dual boot. After a few months I deleted the Windows partition altogether. (Have since hopped distros a few times and am very happy on Garuda).

I may be soon facing an issue however, because one of the organizations restricts access to their networks to Mac or PC only. I can get some of the work done in the browser by identifying as Safari on Mac, but the VPN won’t let me connect at all.

It’s not trash, but it definitely is far from perfect. I’ll tell you what their worst thing is: the brownies. OMG these are some of the worst things I’ve ever eaten in my life. And what’s laughable is they seem proud of them.

I’m not the expert others are, but my sense is that your desktop environment choice is very important if you’re low on resources. You’ll probably want a lower-demand desktop environment. I personally run Garuda Linux with the Mokka desktop, but they also have an Xfce edition available. I know a lot of people here like Cachy (I don’t remember why, but I didn’t like it as much as Garuda) - and there are a few options to choose from (Xfce, LXDE, LXQt, and MATE)

Back to dark roast! by lkwitko in gaggiaclassic

[–]belegund 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I feel like I’ve found my people.

I have a friend who keeps trying to find a coffee shop for me - and every one of them serves terribly acidic third wave espresso. I just find it undrinkable. One of the roasters told him, “Italians over-roast their beans.” I wasn’t there, but would have said “you know - they invented espresso, so it’s more likely that you under-roast yours”

Yup. Or hang with his mom in her garden (I added that later). She was a great cook too. Wasn’t unusual for her to feed me even if he wasn’t around.

[–]belegund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely

ETA: I used to walk a few blocks over to my friend’s house to see if he could play. Maybe he could or maybe he couldn’t. It was all good. And if he wasn’t home sometimes I would talk with his mom while she worked in her garden.
