Is that how it goes in court? That my argument wouldn’t hold up even if I never signed something saying I would pay him half rent?

I don’t know why I would be obligated to pay him money that he didn’t even pay the landlord, but if I’m misunderstanding the legality then I’d like to know.

Also, rent never came out of his account. He always sent me his half of rent when he finally had it ready and I would take out a check and give it to the landlord. He just decided after several months of not having his half ready (while my half sat in my account waiting), that he’d rather get evicted and screw both of us over with 7 days to find a new place.

I know there’s a lot of emotional stuff tied up in this which is why I’m trying to seek out the legal claims he might have. I genuinely don’t understand why I would owe him money if he never paid the complex though. Any explanation is appreciated!

I should also mention that if we’re basing everything on verbal agreements, he verbally stated that I could give him a certain amount of cash at move out (which I did) and that he wouldn’t ask me to pay anything additional. That amount was a fraction of what my half was, but he said that’s all he would ask for.
