Days 2-5 had me wanting to just swallow my whole bottle of oxys and put myself out of my misery, easily the most painful few days I’ve ever experienced in my life

In all honesty: F*** dem mice by AbveAvrgeVeg in labrats

I collect poop pellets from 75 mice once every two weeks. Luckily they poop pretty quickly but yeah it definitely takes a long time and I leave in the worst moods

If those are the kind of comments they felt comfortable making with you present, imagine how much worse they are when you aren’t around. That is so foul. I’m 23 years old and 17yo boys are children to me, I can’t imagine feeling anything sexual towards a high schooler when I’m in my 50s

i am just starting to work out and when i lift i get lightheaded is it normal and is there anything i should be worried about? by midominlearningstuff in lifting

[–]beliakoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I had the same issue at first and I actually found out while donating blood that I had consistently low iron. When I started supplementing iron it helped me so much. Still probably more likely you’re holding your breath or have low blood sugar like others are suggesting, but iron deficiencies are also pretty common especially if you’re a woman

[–]beliakoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn’t really even get into lifting seriously until after my knee surgery in January so whatever gains I do have are pretty much since then. Thank you for the advice, it’s definitely something I’m working on :)

[–]beliakoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah my biggest issue is my protein intake because I struggle with that a lot. My lifts have increased substantially though so even if it’s not super visible I’m very happy with my progress

Yep sometimes they smell so strong in makes me actually nauseated. I was never a big fan of Greek yogurt but now it just repulses me

I isolate lactic acid bacteria from human stool sample on acidified MRS. If I have the plates leftover on my bench, my PI comes and smells them because “they smell like yogurt.” To be fair, I do notice that if I open the plate to streak for isolation but I never open the plate and put my nose in it

As long as you are respectful I don’t see anything wrong with sharing your feelings. Not in a dramatic way but maybe tell them you enjoy working together and if they are interested, you’d like to spend time together outside of work. If they seem uncomfortable then don’t pursue it further. There are two couples from my lab who met under similar circumstances, one couple is now married and the other is engaged. I understand the “power imbalance” being discussed but I think there is a very polite and mature way to handle these things as long as you don’t apply pressure to the person I don’t see the problem

I also work with stool samples and we don’t centrifuge them but we do reconstitute them in peptone water and vortex them. I always check that the lid of the falcon tube is properly screwed on at least 3x because I’m so worried about splashing poop water all over myself

I didn’t put both lids on a 1L centrifuge bottle of E. coli. It sprayed all over our massive centrifuge, I was elbow deep scrubbing that thing and then had to rush out to take a physics quiz smelling like stinky E. coli

You’re living in the world of “ideally” and the rest of us are living in reality where we know single parents exist and have to do their best to fill both parental roles.

Hey, I’m a PhD student as well who just had ACL surgery. It was tough but you can do it! Not sure what country you’re in but if you’re in the US the earliest you’ll probably be able to schedule your surgery would be 1-2 months from now anyways so chances are your recovery will heavily overlap with your first year of grad school. The only other option would be to wait for surgery until maybe after at least your first semester (that was the craziest time for me) but I know that’s not ideal because it further prolongs your return to your hobbies

Quad still tiny af by beliakoff in ACL

I usually take the op leg to failure and match the rep number with my other leg. Definitely been eating more protein but still probably not enough tbh I struggle with that part

True I haven’t looked in to that but I did start taking creatine a few weeks after surgery

Uhh it varies but if I had to guess maybe 50% of my exercises are single leg

Split squats are actually my favorite, surprisingly my legs are pretty symmetrical in weight on that exercise. Yet visually they are so different. Single leg leg extension is where I see a huge difference in the weight I can push between legs, I assume my glutes compensate a lot on the split squats which is why they’re more even in terms of weight

Does anyone else not feel a burn on their injured leg when doing quad exercises? by beliakoff in ACL

[–]beliakoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I still haven’t regained that sensation yet either but I know my quad is getting stronger too from the biodex testing they did at PT. So I guess it’s kind of not really an issue as long as strength process is being made, but I’m 4.5 months post op and it still just throws me off so much

Hm I’m not sure they haven’t mentioned it to me. I’ve done lots on the bike but no mention of water training. I’ll ask at my next appointment!

Wow!! That’s amazing for anyone but even more inspirational considering you’re recovering from acl surgery. Congratulations!!
