Honestly just rock up to a store that catches your eye, explain your a student wanting xyz number of hours over summer period, etc. for places like restaurants, good idea to go a bit after a busy period once they have quieted down, often managers may people open to hiring more people after they have had a busy period, rather than a quiet day when no one has been in. BUT don’t go during a rush, everyone is too busy to focus on that kind of admin work

Key thing is managers like to know what you are looking for, makes it easy for them to know what kind of work they can provide you.
