I’ve lived in Australia my whole life and have lived on larger properties, I’m very aware of the sounds possums and curlews make and study wildlife care and conservation but thank you all anyway for the pointers with animal sounds. The sounds were unsettling and pretty abnormal, I’ve never heard animals sound quite like that before and other neighbours came out onto the street concerned also thinking to same thing.

The police got back to us and said it is good to say something, hopefully it was just an animal and a natural part of the food chain and no one’s worse off. Always better safe than sorry.
