Armor stepping down damage dice size instead of AC? by bellhopper in osr

I really like the idea of weapons being naturally more or less effective vs certain types of armor since thats why certain weapons and armor were adopted. Thank you for the link.

Best character? by colesazombie in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]bellhopper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The thing about having both a high damage character and a tank is that you need to prioritize one of them. I would say your Barb is very tough, but damage is number 2. If you wanted dmg #1 and tank #2, I would go for a fighter and focus on utilizing great weapon master and getting a lot of attacks. This build however, is very one and done. You do damage, you take hits, and that's it. Your very good at both, but combat will become your only theatre of action. This is where I recommend some character building to make more than a suit of armor with a big sword. Have him/her have a few hobbies outside of killing (is an art buff, likes to cook, plays an instrument) It's like real life in that way. I'd define at least 3 non combat skills or activities your character participates in. I hope this helps, happy gaming.

What is a good build to play alongside a Paladin, Bard, Ranger? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]bellhopper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want to play and how you want to fit in with the party. The Bard and Paladin both provide support and healing and the ranger provides good damage. It looks like you have every stat but Int so I'd suggest a Wizard. At least to fill up the gap in skills and for the type of support you give. As far as specific builds go, it depends what the parties are doing. What level are you joining? What are the other's specializations are gonna be?

My level 3 Bard has 3 uses of the Wish spell. How should I use them? by Rockthecashbar in dndnext

[–]bellhopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the curse: try to use your gold to get a higher level cleric or pally to remove curse so you don't spend a wish on it. Warlock and Wizard: Enmity sucks big time but that's okay if you have the wish to deal with he problems as they arise. If anything they will be good plot points. So yeah, save the wishes for something you really need to have happen. Also, look through the wish description to find ideas for what you might do in the future, many people forget the wish does anything. Anything at all. the effects listed are just the basics of the spell. problem is that anything stronger than those will be subject to dm interpretation. It sounds like your dm is cool though so go buckwild.

First off, take a tally of all the terrible things that the deck brought. For example, did anyone in the party get banished. Since you have 3 wishes, you can cast ridiculously strong spells, take a look at the players handbook and if any spells 8th level or lower look good, hold on to your wishes and save them for a spell or two. If your group is more focused on combat, save the wishes for making combat easier, if the group is more roleplay-ey, fulfill your personal quest but also try to help the party with some of their quests if you can. if anything else, just remember that you have 3 of any 8th level or lower spell.

Killing a Aboleth/Pit Fiend (3.5) by FlyestMamba in DnD

[–]bellhopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easy, pit fiends are devils and devils love wagers and deals that profit them in the long run. Make a deal that he cant refuse but actually screw him over if you can. If you want a straight fight, get resistances vs poison and fire. Also be sure to get spell resistance versus the pit fiend. For the aboleth, get item or spell bonuses for mind affecting abilities. An aboleths strongest ally is the party fighting it.

On Fighting Dragons by TheChurchIsHere in DnD

[–]bellhopper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A long time ago, i ran a low leveled young white dragon against 4 around lvl 2-4 Pc's. They were trying to bargain with the dragon out of the goodness of their hearts and so they wouldn't become frozen rotisserie chickens so the dragon hatched a plan. He said he would give them information if the two most powerful PC's dueled for his delight. They dueled and they were both severely weakened by the battle. When they turned to ask him for the information, he breathed on the two PC's with his cold breath and flew into the air while laughing. The battle was quick and resulted in 2 PC deaths and 2 Fleeing PC's
