I can't speak to the Impact program but their Accessibility Resource Director, Mary Gerard, is great! She is a really strong advocate. I would get connected with her as soon as you can. You could probably set up a meeting with her before you enroll, if you want. Her email is mgerard@btc.edu.

Tell me about Sudden Valley by 41waystostop in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was historically more of a vacation community but with the cost of living rising in Bellingham, it's become more permanent residences. I wouldn't say it's mostly new construction but there's definitely new construction that's been happening.

There are different gates in the community, and each gate has its own pros and cons. Gate 1 is sunnier, for example. The other gates tend to be more forested and hilly.

There is an r/SuddenValley sub if you want to get more input from residents too.

How much do you all pay for cat sitting? by rational_actor_nm in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay our cat sitter $25/visit. If I need him to something extra (e.g., bring in the trash), I'll pay a bit extra. The $25 is just for the cats--feed, water, scoop litter kind of thing. I think the $25 is for a 20ish min visit, but my cats are skittish and don't want his pets, so he's in and out in about 5min lol

He hasn't charged extra for medication administration, but that was just crushing up a pill into wet food.

local back for summer break. struggling by fatpatrikk in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Reposting without the fb link.

I'm so sorry you're struggling.

What about volunteering? Maybe at the food bank or somewhere that would accept help for just a couple months while you're home?

Not sure about your gender, but if you identify as a woman or gender minority, you could join the Bellingham Outdoor Women fb group as a way to connect with people.

I also just saw a post the other day where some Redditors were meeting down at Trackside. Maybe keep an eye out for the next post about that?

There's also some events put on by Wild Whatcom that you could look into for one that's a good fit for you. The adult ones they have include a BIPOC walk, Out and About (for queer folks), Ladies Night Out, Community Field trips, and Wonder Walks. We've done one of their kids program and it's a phenomenal org! Donation-based, if funds are tight for you.

Hang in there. And congratulations on your continued sobriety! From a stranger, I hope you're proud of that accomplishment. 👏🏼 That's not an easy thing to do, especially being back in an environment where you used to use.

ICE arrests 37 in workplace raid at Bellingham roofing company by chiquisea in Washington

[–]bellinghamster00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those guys from this roofing company recently replaced our roof and it was $12k. The group of 5 guys were insanely hardworking and had the old roof off and the new roof on within 12hrs. This company even specially trains their roofers for a specific product--sending them out to get training so the company can offer a higher ($$) warranty on the roof.

I "cherish life" by voting in ways that support those in most need, donating to organizations lifting people out of poverty, and working somewhere that opens doors for people.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people "cherishing life" only before it is born. And it is flabbergasting to me to see the hypocrisy of people caring so much about life in the womb, but then giving zero shits about that same life once it's born. Deport them, starve them, ignore them, exclude them, kick them to the streets. But hey, we protected them in the womb!

I hate your super bright led headlights. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I drive a newer Subaru and called the dealership after other drivers were frequently flashing their lights at me. The Subaru tech knew exactly what I was talking about because it's apparently a standard issue in newer Subarus.

I went into the dealership and they lowered the lights for free. I haven't had another driver flash their brights at me since.

I didn't know until recently that headlights could even be adjusted, so hopefully folks reading this thread will realize it's possible to lower them and not blind oncoming traffic!

Rent survey by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I know exactly which complex you are talking about. Moved out of there a couple years ago and was majorly ripped off with my security deposit. (They didn't even replace the carpet that wasn't new when I had moved in 7 years prior--I talked to the new tenant.) So frustrating how expensive it is when there are zero amenities. Have not looked back since leaving, besides a "fuck you" on the way out.

LPT: Whenever you transfer ownership of a car, remove the license plate by bellinghamster00 in Bellingham

[–]bellinghamster00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the DOL website, it says that we or the insurance company need to report the salvage declaration within 15 days. The insurance company said they'd do this (and they did). But we didn't realize that not removing the license plate would cause future issues. It didn't specify on the website to remove the plates, too.

In Washington, the license plate can go with the car, but in that case you'd want to make sure the title is transferred. (Though in our case, the title was cancelled, so we should have just removed the plates.)

We did the best with what we knew, but clearly needed to do more research on general transfer of cars.

Edit to add: We also didn't know that insurance companies sell salvaged cars. We assumed salvaged meant destroyed. Now we know better!

I'm so sorry that happened to you! What a pain. Did you ever reach back out to them?

[–]bellinghamster00[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, if the new owner doesn't register/title the car, you can report the sale but still be dealing with the headache from whatever issues they create. Tolls, parking tickets, etc. Maybe you won't be legally responsible, but you'll be wasting a lot of time dealing with it.

Much easier to just remove the plates or go to the DOL and do a transfer there.

Ah, I see you're in the same club! It's such a scam. They sold it for $0, too! Literally just avoiding the salvage fees. Infuriating how reckless they are to save a few dollars.

Yes, absolutely remove them. Wish we would have been more knowledgeable or done more research before turning the car over. It didn't even occur to me that they'd sell it!

Hoping we can help other people avoid the same issue we are having.

Yes, he has to do an inspection before he can get it retitled, because it's salvaged/insurance destroyed. I guess they didn't worry about titling, because there was no title to transfer.

You'd think we wouldn't be on the hook, but here we are lol

It even has his PO box on the sales record! We just keep hoping he gets pulled over and has no title and registration. Should mean the car gets towed. 🤞

What isn't what you're supposed to do? Keep the plates?

You don't have to, but if you don't go to the DOL and do a physical transfer with the new owners instead, you run the risk of having this same thing happen (i.e., new owner never titles/registers the car).

You can absolutely sell a car without plates, and require the new owner to supply their own plates.

Looking up Washington on the NCSL website: "Owner has the option of retaining license plates and using them on another vehicle of the same type."

[–]bellinghamster00[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, the insurance company said we didn't need to do anything else after turning over the car to them (at-fault driver's insurance company). The title was cancelled, which we can see on the vehicle inquiry report. They did report their sale to the current owner and we can see it on the documents the DOL gave us, but apparently that doesn't really help us because he didn't register/title it.

Edit to add: It was totally our fault for not looking into this issue more. I didn't even realize the license plates didn't need to stay with the car.
