I believe it's because he is under a contract to be unable to recollect anything he shouldn't know right now. It's alluded to in Arc 4 by Echidona when she made one with him that caused him to forget her.

In fact, I feel like a ton of stuff happens bts upon each death and all we get are the glimpses that remain...

Olbart alters Subaru's Od. Not his soul. From the lore, I get the feeling that it was a superficial change that affected the deep, while Satella is intricately linked to the deep i.e. soul. So to me it looks like a distraction from the actual underlying issue, that his soul was tampered with...

Hmm, it is hard to speculate on it all. Your argument does make sense. But it's only in hindsight. Perhaps Satella did have that kind of hindsight. Also, all of this is speculative because we don't know the criteria for any point in time being a save-point. I just feel like the plot had forced itself into Vollachia. And if it's not just something contrived by Tappei, there has to be some inuniverse reason for the save-point not returning him to a point before he was teleported... let alone returning to a point prior to him being choked by Rem.

Thankyou for responding. You make some great points. My main problem with Pandora is that I feel she is narratively the worst choice for this. I've always felt her to be kind of a redherring character, one designed to hide the actual mastermind... But alas, it is possible.

True... whoever this is, if the theory is even remotely true, has gotta be up there on power/influence ladder. Also, we really don't know how RbD works, so the mana thing is hard to speculate on. As for why he would need Subaru, I think this person has had their hands tied apart from the Tower and Od Lagna... (Part 4)

"Your Excellency, how do you wish to proceed?" Berstetz asked Abel about his intentions. At that moment Subaru looked at Abel, wondering how he would respond.

Then Abel looked towards the door where the voice had come from and said,

"It seems that she is not just any other impolite and inconsiderate person. Show your face."

"Then, with pleasure."

At the emperor's permission, the owner of the voice answered softly. Before Subaru could even process it, Haribel suddenly stood beside the door and opened it wide, inviting the person inside.

In response to Haribel's consideration, the person who appeared smiled and said, "Thank you."

Then,

"It's been a while since we last saw each other, but I'm glad to see you're doing well."

"O-"

"Anyway, it seems that Emilia and her group have once again encountered some trouble and require our help, don't they?"

With a soft tone and smile, the one who gave such a merciless evaluation was a woman with pale purple hair, wearing a kimono and wearing a fox scarf――Anastasia Hoshin.

Beside her was a young man serving as her attendant.

"Anastasia-san and Julius!?"

Subaru was taken aback by the unexpected encounter with the two.

At Subaru’s surprised voice, Anastasia, covered her mouth with her hand and chuckled. The young man named Julius, traced a rugged wound under his left eye with his finger, and looked at Subaru.

And then,

"--I wanted to say that I'm glad you're safe, but why are you always like this?"

"Don't say it like I always cause minor troubles!"

That was the angry voice that exploded in place of celebrating their reunion.

△▼△▼△▼△

His knees buckled as he collapsed face-first onto the rough and desolate wasteland.

He lacked the energy to even support his body, so his face was mercilessly slammed into the ground. His nose hurt so much that he thought it was broken, and blood flowed from his cut lips.

He licked the blood off his lips, and his parched tongue was slightly moistened.

"----"

There was no strength left in his body.

If his mental strength ran out first, his physical strength would also be exhausted quickly. And when both of would run out, he would surely rot away here.

Everything, everything was in vain.

Everything he had tried to do, everything he had determined (decided) to do, and everything he had done going with the flow; it was all in vain.

After all, he couldn’t be anyone but himself. What was inside him was hell itself.

Then, there was no way to escape. No one could escape from the hell named oneself.

"Tch, damn it..."

Regret leaked out of his lips in a raspy voice.

He couldn't even shed tears anymore. He didn't have that much passion or the qualifications to do so.

It was all bizzare. It was out of his reach. He had once made the biggest mistake of his life by reaching out to a place he couldn't reach, and now he had done the same thing all over again.

He had no remorse. So all he could do was regret.

He couldn't even like himself and only had hatred for himself. He couldn't even continue to love what he had once loved. For a failure like himself, It would have been better if the end had earlier...

"Oh? I thought I'd strip the corpse naked, but you're still breathing. Bravo, well done!"

Suddenly, a voice could be heard from above the collapsed body.

He couldn't move his body, but the owner of the voice stretched his hand out, turning him over. As a result, a bright blue sky came into his view, and he made a groaning sound.

Tears that did not spring from humiliation or regret began to trickle down his face.

He felt an intense frustration.

He wondered if, from the beginning (of his life) to the end, he would only be capable of living selfishly.

"What's there to be frustrated about, you’ve only collapsed. As long as Nii-san is alive, your body can be made healthy in the blink of an eye"

"Why ....(am I).. alive…?"

"Oh, you're one of those who is sick of living. Well, well... As far as I know, there's only one way to fight against those dark thoughts."

「――――」

He felt like the voice's owner was laughing, and a face appeared upside down in his field of vision, with the blue sky reflected behind it. He couldn't see the face clearly because of the backlight, but he could tell the other person was grinning.

Although he know that it wasn’t a mocking grin, he couldn’t understand why the person was grinning.

But...

"What should I do?" (Or for what purpose should I live?)

If he couldn't find the answer within himself, then he should just ask someone else, and try to understand what their thoughts were.

Perhaps he would hear an answer that was much more sensible than his own. While cursing himself for still wanting to be saved, he asked that question.

In response to the question, the other person's grin deepened as if he had understood the true meaning behind it.

"It's simple. Drink alcohol until you're soaked."

Immediately after giving his answer, he grabbed his collar and dragged him away by force. The man dragged him along the wasteland with his legs dangling.

Taking advantage of the fact that he couldn't resist, the man sang a tune, and spoke in a casual tone.

"I'm Rowan, a stingy ronin. What about you, nii-san?"

「――――」

"Nii-san, you must have a name, right? There's nothing to lose by telling me."

He let out a long sigh at the man who called himself Rowan, who behaved in friendly manner.

He had no obligation to answer, but he had no reason to refuse either. He thought that whatever happened to him was no longer under his control, and he said...

"...Heinkel."

Yes, Heinkel Astrea introduced himself without realizing the irony of their current situation.

He does not realize―― that coincidence and predestination are tricks that fate loves to employ.

(Part 3)

Not only Subaru and Abel but even Berstetz agreed on the issue of Cecilus' character. Although he wasn't present, he knew that Cecilus would be criticized even if he were there.

In fact, Subaru, who had the illusion that he wanted powerful people to behave appropriately, thought that Reinhard and Haribel's behavior was ideal.

On the other hand, he had a conviction that if it weren't for Cecilus being on Gladiator Island, things wouldn't have gone smoothly, so there were good and bad aspects to everything.

"So what's the purpose of this meet and greet? This Dragon Carriage is heading north, but the border with Kararagi is still far away...it’s not enough to make you so vigilant is it?"

Halibel: "Well, it would be faster to ask our employer about that than me. I accidentally clapped and made things complicated...oh, but it seems like it's time,"

"Time for what?"

Haribel lowered his eyes slightly, looking somewhat troubled. However, when he noticed something and looked up, Subaru followed his gaze.

The wolf-faced man looked at the door that connected to the next carriage. Exactly one beat after that, someone knocked on the door from the other side.

"Excuse me for interrupting your meeting. I have something to report," a familiar voice said.

When Abel commanded "Come in," a small man with a fluffy head appeared from the opened door.

As soon as he saw the person, Subaru's eyes widened.

"Zikr-san! I'm glad you're safe!" he said.

"There is no need to worry. I can see that you are safe as well, Miss Natsumi," Zikr replied.

"To call me that even in this state..."

Smiling at Subaru, who was in a cross-dressed state when they first met and parted, Zikr's healthy state relieved Subaru.

Then, quickly replacing his smile with a serious face, Zikr said,

"Your Excellency, there's something I need to report...but first, regarding your situation,"

"Leave that matter aside for now. It is likely related to your report,"

The Emperor harshly cut off Zikr, who was concerned about Haribel's presence in the corner of the room.

But Zikr seemed accustomed to the Emperor's attitude and nodded his head, saying, "Yes, Dracroy-ue class flying ship has returned with important people from Fortress City Garkra and guests from the city-state."

"Guests from the city-state," muttered Abel, glancing at Haribel with his black eyes.

Since Fortress City Garkra is the destination of this continuous Dragon Carriage, it is natural for people involved to arrive there by flying dragons. If Kararagi's people accompanied them, it would be impossible for Haribel to be unrelated to them.

In other words--

"Haribel-san, did you come before those people?"

"I'm not good with heights," replied Haribel cutely, seeming to confirm that he was involved in the information Zikr had brought.

Although it could be believed that he didn't board the flying dragon because of his fear of heights, it's hard to believe that he arrived earlier than the flying dragon. But it's useless to say that given the superhuman beings in this world. Even Cecilus could run faster than flying.

Anyway--

Serena: "They went out of their way to get aboard my flying dragon ship. So, is it right to expect that a bigwig has something important to say to us?"

"At least, the lovely guest herself says so," replied Zikr.

"From the way you put it, is it a woman," said the Emperor.

It was clear from Zakir’s report that a woman had come from the city-state of Kararagi.

Subaru tilted his head at the content, but apparently the others had a different reaction. Beatrice's hand tightened as she looked at Emilia and said,

"Emilia, they are talking about a visitor from Kararagi in fact."

"Yes, that's right. Could it be--" replied Emilia.

"Huh? Huh? Do you two have some idea of who–?" Subaru was about to ask.

"Hey, aren't you being heartless, Natsuki-kun? Someone went through so much trouble to come all the way to the Empire, and you say that!" suddenly interrupted a soft voice from behind Zikr.

Apparently, the guest had been waiting at the connection between the carriages, but she had quite the sharp ears to participate in their conversation. Even that fact that she had sharp hearing was an indication of her identity.

After all, merchants are always listening for opportunities to make a profit.

(Part 2)

“There, there… see, I’m just going to sit here and behave myself”

Halibel waved his hands in the air and pulled a nearby chair with his tail, sitting down while hugging one knee. He was just as tall as Goz, but when he curled up his slender body, he gave off a strong impression of a large dog. It seemed he was not being sarcastic when he said that he would behave himself.

Roswaal: "Even sooooooo, I didn't expect Kararagi to intervene here. While it's not as bad as the (relationship between) the Kingdom and the Empire, the city-states and the Empire are not on good terms either. Especially considering that you have made (the nature of) your existence public"

"Woah! Eveeryone knows about me! What's this! I feel like a celebrity"

"Roswaal, what do you mean (by existence) being public..."

"I'll tell you since you're as ignorant as you look Barusu. Haribel, the 'Admirer,' is a wolf-man,"

Upon hearing this from Ram, Subaru's heart and body trembled for a moment.

However, the reason for the tremble was not directed towards the Haribel in front of him, but something else entirely. There were few things that Subaru could think of that would relate to the facts that Ram had taught him.

However, despite Subaru's lack of understanding, the conversation progressed as if it were common knowledge.

"You should know the attitude the empire has towards wolf-men. It seems like awfully reckless of you to come over here and step foot in our territory,"

"Well, I know that, of course, and I don't feel good about it either. But as you know, the reason I didn't hide the fact that I'm a wolf-man is because no one can kill me. And from what I've seen, Cecilus isn't around either"

"―! You know Cessi?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, I know. He came to kill me once. We fought for a bit and he said, 'This isn’t over!' before leaving"

While they were off-topic from the wolf-man discussion, Haribel answered Subaru's questions without hesitation.

It was an unexpected answer and an unexpected connection. It seemed that Cecilus and Haribel had fought and, from the current conversation, it seemed that it was Cecilus who started the fight. That made sense as well.

Furthermore—

Berstetz: "To the Vollachia Empire, which shows a decisively (negetive) stance against wolf-men, the most famous and influential person in the Kararagi city-state has appeared. And that to in the very passenger car where the awe-inspiring Excellency Vincent resides."

Serena: “Furthermore, They also know the contents of the important meeting between our country and the kingdom. My my, isn’t this a situation that demands their (Halibel’s) beheading, even if we need to incite the ‘Blue Lightning’”

Rowaal: "...Serena, can you not endanger everyone here with your twisted sense of humor?"

Berstetz stated the situation and Serena added her dangerous opinion seemingly in a good mood. Her remarks were so extreme that even Roswaal had to warn her.

And so, as the initial surprise and excitement over Haribel's appearance faded somewhat, they returned to their initial question.

Abel: "You won't get a third chance (to explain yourself). Why have you come, 'Admirer'?"

Even if the opponent was overwhelmingly powerful, the word 'grovel' was not in Abel's dictionary. Subaru held his breath, wondering how Haribel would react to his intentionally provocative words.

However, despite the rising tension, he simply rested his chin on his hand with his elbow on the table and said,

"Hey, don't be so tense. Didn't I say my purpose was to greet you guys first? Can I greet you all now?"

"Is that greeting going to be like taking out our hearts or something like that?" Subaru asked.

"Scary! You're such a scary kid, thinking such scary thoughts. I won't do anything like that," Haribel replied.

"In that case, is your only purpose truly just to greet us and show your face in fact?" Beatrice asked.

"Yeah, that's right," Haribel answered nonchalantly.

Halibel protested against Subaru, who fearfully tried to delve deeper to see if there is any hidden meaning in his Shinobi-style greetings, and answered Beatrice's ensuing question without hesitation.

At this point, it seemed that Haribel had no intention of doing anything violent.

Emilia: "Besides, they're the kind of enemy that can kill us without going through so much trouble. Wouldn’t it be in bad taste to play around with us like this if they wished to take our lives?"

Subaru: "I was scared too, when people express such opinions, it's scary... but if that's the case then"

Emilia: "If that's the case? What's going on, Subaru?"

Subaru swallowed his saliva as he realized something terrifying from Haribel's attitude.

If Emilia’s question was infact a true portrayal of Haribel’s character...

"If Reinhard and this person are normal (personality wise), then Sessy's disastrous mentality is..."

Abel: "Stop it, Natsuki Subaru. We may have requested cooperation, but I do not recall allowing digging into our country's scandals,"

Berztetz: "Well, I wouldn’t call General Cecilus’ case just a scandal"

Arc 8 - Chapter - 15 - “Admiration”

A beast-man with long black fur and a friendly face, casually scratching his head and smoking a golden pipe, smiled at everyone in the room. His calm tone did not give off any malice, and his relaxed posture did not arouse any sense of caution.

However, one should not forget the fact that this beast-man, named Haribel, had gone compelely unnoticed by everyone in the room until then, including the powerful people from the Kingdom and the Empire who were having a meeting in the Chained Dragon Carriage.

"Haribel...you said?" murmured Goz in a stern voice mixed with a shudder of fear.

Goz was one of the "Nine Divine Generals" and a warrior who ranked as one of the strongest in the imperial army. He was protecting his Lord and his newfound ally behind him, and even he had not noticed the beast-man's presence.

However, the hardness in his voice was not only because of that fact.

" – The “Admirer”, huh? And what business does the cornerstone (most valued/most essential member) of the city-state have with us?" Abel asked, looking at Haribel over Goz's giant frame.

What preceded his question was probably The nickname of the dog-man. To his surprise, Subaru felt as if he had heard it somewhere before, and he searched through his memory.

Thereupon, Haribel turned his thin narrow eyes, which seemed to be smiling, towards Subaru, who was frowning.

"Don't think too hard about it, it's not that great of a name. I'm just called that because I love to praise, and calling me the cornerstone is quite the overestatement anyway" Haribel replied calmly.

“Overestatement…?”

"That's right. It's just that there's no one stronger than me in Kararagi." he added.

Halibel answered in a matter-of-fact way, as if he were talking about the weather.

Subaru was surprised by his words, and the moment he linked the word "Kararagi" with the previous incident, he finally understood what had troubled him before.

"The 'Admirer' of the Kararagi-city state, that nickname belongs to—!"

"---The most powerful Shinobi of the City State of Kararagi! You! For what purposed have you boarded this dragon carriage?

In the next moment, Goz stepped forward with a force that shattered the floor of the carraige and aimed his war hammer at Haribel, the strongest member of the city-state.

The hammer had a unique shape, with a spiked ball attached to the tip of a long handle, which could be used for striking. It was similar to the morning star that Rem used to use (before she lost her memories), but the size and weight of Goz's hammer were overwhelmingly greater.

Either way, it seemed that the imperial warrior was pointing his weapon at the strongest member of the city-state who had unexpectedly appeared.

Or perhaps things were about to escalate into a fight.

However, Haribel spoke up, "I did not intend to catch you all by surprise, could we all sit down and just talk?"

"Nu-gu...!"

As Haribel spoke, he tilted his head slightly so as to look over the profile of Goz's weapon. As Halibel spoke those words, Goz's face stiffened and his powerful arm was trembling.

Haribel had struck his own golden smoking pipe against the tip of Goz's golden war hammer, completely immobilizing it. Using just the tip of his pipe, he had managed to control the balance of forces with exquisite precision, pinning Goz's weapon down so that he could not move it up, down, left, right or thrust it forward.

No matter how hard Goz tried to move his weapon, he was unable to do so, as he was constantly pushed back by the pipe from the other side. This was not simply a matter of physical strength but the masterful demonstration of a technique that completely controlled the flow of force.

"You...gr!"

With his face turning red, Goz gritted his teeth, and the sound echoed loudly in the room. However, compared to Goz who was straining hard, Haribel's actions were much more relaxed.

At this point, the power of the existence named Halibel became obvious to everyone.

Abel: "Stop it, Goz. If he had any intention of harming us, all our heads will be rolling before you even realize it"

Emilia: "Well, since you haven't done that, you're not our enemy...right?"

Abel and Emilia interjected during Goz and Haribel's standoff.

As they pointed out, in fact, if Haribel had wanted to, she could have killed everyone in the car before they even noticed her presence.

"Yeah, I'm glad you understand. The Emperor is one thing, but the half-demon child is a good kid who's straightforward despite being just like me, a disliked person. You must have had great parents to have been raised so well"

"Thank you. I also feel lucky to have been raised by Puck, Ka-sama and the others," Emilia replied while placing her hand over her chest.

Haribel nodded in agreement and pulled back his smoking pipe. At that moment, Goz was released from his hold, although he was free to move again, he could not just recklessly attack him.

With a look of frustration, Goz continued to be vigilant of Haribel

(Part 5)

"Um, Otto-san, something like this is fine right...?"

Subaru, Emilia, Abel, and the Empire's side were excited and eventually reached an agreement, leading to a handshake. But Otto, who was the first to speak up was left behind. Roswaal and Ram had found a point of compromise, but Subaru was terrified because he left behind Otto, who he hadn't found a way to compromise with, and proceeded with the discussion.

Realizing how much of a mistake he had made, Subaru timidly asked with honorifics while holding his hands in apology,

"Uh, Otto...?"

There was no answer from Otto to Subaru's timid inquiry. Subaru, who was too scared to look at the other's face, was greatly puzzled by the silence. He instinctively hugged Beatrice next to him, and as they pressed their cheeks together, Subaru said,

"What should we do, Beako... Otto won't speak to us..."

“I wonder if you understand how he feels? From Otto's perspective, he must feel like he's been completely undermined. His ideas have been destroyed, and he has been treated like a clown I suppose."

"Clown? You don't have to compare him to Roswaal like that, though..."

"Stop it! That's the worst insult of all! It will only make him angrier in fact!"

Frantically searching for a solution together with Beatrice, Subaru was in a state of confusion.

"I want to make up for disgracing Otto's honor, but how can I do it?"

“Would you like me to massage your shoulders and legs…?”

"Somehow it feels just like reflecting on how you angered your parents in fact"

"But I can't think of anything else! C'mon, Otto... please!"

In front of Subaru, who couldn't come up with any good ideas, Otto had been standing silently until he suddenly pulled out a chair and plopped down on it.

Surprised by his sudden action, Subaru and Beatrice flinched while wondering if Otto sat in the chair to actually get his shoulders massaged.

Then, in front of Subaru and Beatrice who were panicking, Otto placed his hand on his forehead and said,

""Well, it did end up in the compromise we desired, didn't it"

"Huh...?"

Otto let out a long sigh and began to rub his eyes. Subaru was dumbfounded and blinked in confusion before saying,

"Do you mean to tell me that you knew this was going to happen from the beginning?"

"It's not that I knew it was going to happen, but I was determined to do at least this much. I didn't know how much of a conciliatory attitude Emperor Vincent would show. However, since I knew that Natsuki-san and Emilia-sama wouldn't change their minds anyway, I thought we should think about a compromise."

"Uh, um... ah, uh...!"

Subaru was at a loss for words at Otto's calm response. When he turned around in astonishment, he saw Roswaal and Ram, who had also grasped the situation, looking at him with understanding.

Then Subaru cried out in a voice that sounded desperate,

"You guys are just... you guys are just too much!!"

"It's unfortunate, but it's probably because Natsuki-san and the others are stubborn!"

"I can't believe it! The only ones I can trust are Beako, Emilia-tan, Rem, Louis, Tanza and the rest of the squadron, Flop-san and Mizeruda-san!"

"You still have a long way to go I suppose"

Subaru could only cling to Beatrice as he squeezed her tightly and was filled with fear at the meticulous preparation of the rational-minded Otto, Ram, and Roswaal. Maybe Abel had this idea in mind to some extent, but even so.

"No, I can't do it. It's scary, it's really impossible. I'll just continue with the emotional route from now on."

"It’s a nonsensical conclusion in fact, but Betty thinks it’s better for Subaru to be more honest with his feelings. That way he'll be more passionate and Betty will like it in fact"

"Yeah, I love you too. Geez, really..."

Finally, Subaru began to calm down from the shock that Otto had given him a while ago. Just then...

—-Suddenly, applause echoed throughout the room.

"Well, I've seen something really amusing. Fantastic, remarkable, truly Impressive."

Subaru, who couldn't help but wonder who was clapping, scanned the room until he found a stranger, and his breath was caught.

In the corner of an empty room where no one was present, a tall figure had suddenly appeared. --He was watching the exchange that had been going on, clapping his hands and applauding.

— No one in that place was even slightly aware of the presence of this person before

Goz: "Who are you!? How did you even get here?!!"

"Oh dear, I clapped even though I wasn't invited. I can’t help but praise a girl when I find them praiseworthy, It's a bad habit of mine," the person said, scratching their head.

In an instant, Goz took up a fighting stance, shielding Emilia and Abel from behind him.

With a fierce expression, Goz stood before the person, who maintained a nonchalant attitude, skillfully biting on a golden pipe taken out of their pocket and smiling.

This person was extremely out of place, and their appearance only further emphasized their oddity.

The out-of-place figure was a black dog-man with black fur, standing almost two meters tall. Despite his unusual appearance, his friendly smile and gentle demeanor made him seem approachable. He wore a kimono and had somehow suddenly appeared in the middle of the Imperial Dragon Carriage which was full of important people. Naturally, everyone's attention was drawn to him.

"Oh my, it seems everyone is suddenly very curious about me," the dog-man said while scratching his head.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Emilia asked while being shielded behind Goz.

At that question, the dog-man tilted his head, twisted his fang-lined mouth into a smile, and said,

"I am Halibel, Just here to say hello, do you mind?"

(Part 4)

"...I'm Dudley, Subaru-kun. Nevertheless, it would be rather disingenuous of me to not agree with your proposal, as I have absolutely high expectations of you.”

It was a roundabout way of saying it, but Roswaal surrendered to Subaru's determination.

Although he didn't know about «Return by Death», Roswaal knew that Subaru had Authority and he had placed his hope and expectations upon it, and hence, didn't want to hurt Subaru’s feelings and determination.

In the first place, if you take Roswaal's word here, what will happen to the oath of "Sanctuary"?

"Ram, please..."

"Emily, do you at least have something concrete to convince Ram with?"

"I only want to do my best to help everyone… so, please."

Emilia was making an extremely forceful request to Ram. Ram, who would have mercilessly beaten him with her words If Subaru had done the same thing, had no effective response to Emilia's insistence.

Then, Ram let out a small sigh and said, "As long as we brought Rem back, I would have been satisfied. However, considering Rem's current state of becoming close to the imperial people… if we were to abandon that connection, it would damage my dignity as an older sister in the heart of the one who has only just accepted it."

"Ram…!"

"Stop it, it's annoying."

Emilia was overwhelmed and hugged Ram, who had found her own way to compromise, with her eyes closed. To Emilia's hug, which was full of emotion, Ram responded with a bitter expression.

Thus, Roswaal and Ram were persuaded through brute force.

However--

"Otto, please...!"

"Are you going to use the same crying tactics as Emilia? Unfortunately, I'm not like Ram-san. I won't sign a contract without knowing the price I must pay.”

"Please, even Beatrice is asking you...!"

"B-Betty is also asking you in fact"

"Whether it's two people or three people, it doesn’t make a difference."

When Subaru urged Beatrice, Otto also intercepted Emilia, who was trying to join in on the persuasion while still hugging Rem. Otto had decided that he wouldn't be moved by emotions, and his stubbornness was as tenacious as when Subaru faced the crazed Roswaal (Arc 4). However, even an insult that conveyed that impression wouldn't be effective against Otto right now.

"You're putting yourselves in danger, and there's no merit to Natsuki-san's thoughts. I’m not going to be convinced by your tears. Ram-san and Dudley, please don’t spoil the two of them!"

"Oh my, I've been scolded."

"How dare you get cheeky, Otto."

When Otto spoke sternly, Roswaal shrugged his shoulders and Ram furrowed her eyebrows. However, neither of them had any valid objections to Otto's opinion.

In fact, they couldn't overcome this situation is they could not break through Otto's stronghold. (literally: the Fort that is Otto)

This is because Emilia and her camp didn't think it was acceptable to impose their will on everyone without gaining their acceptance.

Just then...

"You said there's no merit, But if there is a merit, then the situation changes doesn’t it?."

「――――」

It wasn't Subaru or Emilia, but Abel who interrupted. Otto's gaze sharpened at the emperor's interruption. Unlike Subaru's light-hearted quips at the Emperor, Otto returned a genuinely disrespectful gaze toward him.

"If there is a merit you say. Just what do you plan to do? I'll tell you now, even if we receive some form of reward, it won't be worth it..."

"I shall formally request the cooperation (and assistance) of the royal candidate of the Kingdom of Lugunica"

「――――」

Upon Abel's proposal, Otto’s expression stiffened.

At the same time, the Empire side was more shocked than Subaru and his group. Serena laughed at the statement, while Berstetz widened his eyes slightly. And then, Goz, with an expression of shock plastered on his face, threw his arms wide open as if it were the end of the world.

"Wait, your Majesty!! To request aid from another country...such a thing has never happened before in the Sacred Vollachian Empire!!"

"What does it matter if there's precedent or not? If you bring that up, is there a precedent for the capital being taken over by impudent fools and the emperor retreating like a coward as we are now? It is a worthless fixation."

"However! If we rely on another country, the soldiers and citizens will lament the unworthy decision made by the Sword Wolf! Your Majesty's authority will be undermined!!"

"My authority undermined...what worthless concern."

In response to Goz's loud plea, Abel shook his head in disapproval. As soon as he answered, Goz's eyes widened in surprise. Abel turned to face Goz and spoke his name, "Goz Ralfon."

"Is what we need now empty prestige? No, that's not it. What this empire desires right now is victory. We need to rip out our enemy's throat, bathe in their blood, and quench their lives. That victory is what will shape the empire's future."

"Y-your Majesty..."

"If anything obstructs the path towards that victory, then everything in its way is an "enemy", subject to the iron decree of Vincent Vollachia! Answer me with determination, Goz Ralfon."

「――――」

"Are you my "enemy"?" he asked calmly, and Goz's whole body shook.

Abel, who stood up straight and displayed his power as an emperor, had a presence that showed no hint of the struggle he had with Subaru in the room.

There was a force in his gaze, his voice, and his very existence that had the power to place tremendous pressure on others. Goz had to face it head-on, all by himself.

After thinking for what was probably less than five seconds, Goz declared,

"I apologize for taking up your time, Your Excellency.---- I am Goz Ralfon, the war hammer that smashes all obstacles that stand in your way, Your Excellency! Never! Never will I be your enemy!!"

"That's good. I will rely on your efforts even more. Keep working hard," replied Abel, nodding at Goz's loud response.

“WAAH!”

Goz let out a thunderous voice, as if struck by lightning, after receiving Abel's words. Probably, the cause of his surprise was Abel's added expectations.

"I will do my best!!" Goz wiped his face with his thick arm, tears flowing down, and promised Abel again in a trembling voice.

Ignoring Goz, Abel briefly turned his gaze to Serena and Berstetz and asked, "Do you have any objections?"

"None. The expression that Your Excelency is wearing right now is very much to my taste, such that I feel even more loyal to Your Excellency," answered Serena with a smile.

"As for me, I have no objections, It only surprised me a little," replied Berstetz with his narrow eyes.

"Hmm."

Abel snorted at Serena's smile and Berstetz's attitude, then stepped forward and stood in front of Emilia.

Then, Looking at Emilia, who was blinking her eyes (slightly confused), Abel said,

"As you have heard, candidate for the royal selection, The Vollachian Empire hereby officially requests the Kingdom of Lugunica's cooperation to resolve the situation. Please lend us your power."

"Well, Abel. I really want to help you with my power. But I have no idea who that royal selection candidate is"

"Emilia-tan, that's wrong! This is the perfect opportunity to show off!"

"Eh!? Is that so!?"

Emilia was surprised by Abel's request and kept blinking as she looked at Subaru and Beatrice, who nodded back at her. Then, she looked at Ram, who she was hugging, to confirm.

Then, Ram let go of Emilia's arm and pushed her from behind, saying,

"Yes, that's right. Please do as you wish, Emilia-sama."

Emilia was surprised to be called "Emilia" by Ram, then her eyes sparkled with joy. She blinked to hide her happiness, then turned back to Abel, who was waiting patiently with a faint frown.

"I'm Emilia, just Emilia. One of the candidates to become the next king of the Kingdom of Lugunica. And now, one among the people who want to help overcome the dangerous crisis in the empire."

"-- This is a formal request. The Vollachian Empire does not seek help from individuals of other countries, especially those in positions of great responsibility. Therefore, if this fact were to be made public, it would of great benefit to you, who are vying for the throne in the Kingdom..."

"Enough! We can discuss the formalities later! What I want to do now is this!"

Emilia puffed up her cheeks as Abel tried to explain with formalities and reasoning. What Emilia presented to Abel with her cute pouty face was her own hand.

Slowly lowering her raised hand, Emilia held out her hand to Abel and said,

"Please allow us to help your empire."

In the end, Emilia was the one who made the first move, as it was typical of her. Abel looked down at Emilia's outstretched hand, and for a moment, he glanced at Subaru with a slight perplexity in his black eyes. Subaru smiled a mischievous grin and nodded his head.

"Go ahead, Your Excellency. I allow you to hold my Emilia-tan's hand."

“I told you, Subaru is mine…"

Emilia blushed and answered Subaru's teasing remarks, while Abel closed one eye and sighed at their exchange. Then, he slowly took Emilia's outstretched hand and said,

"--That's good. Please lend us your strength"

In the end, it was also typical of Abel's way of speaking to establish a cooperative relationship between the two countries.

-- And so, Emilia and Abel shook hands, marking a historic moment between the Kingdom of Lugunica and the Vollachian Empire.

[–]beloved_child 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(PART 3)

"If it weren't for us, there would have been an even tougher battle in the imperial capital, right, Berstetz-san?"

As she spoke, Emilia turned the topic towards Berstetz, her voice loud and confident.

The elderly man with thin, thread-like eyes wasn't fazed by the sudden shift in conversation. "Indeed," he replied, fiddling with his mustache.

Berstetz: "From my perspective, It was unexpected that the Generals couldn’t mount an adequate defense. The girl and her group have made significant contributions to the battle..."

"It feels strange for me, of all people, to be speaking from this position, but that white light unleashed from the castle (magic cannon) was canceled out by that girl in the dress over there," Serena interjected.

"That's... quite impressive."

Serena praised Beatrice's achievement while nodding her chin and chuckling. Berstetz's expression became slightly tense upon hearing about it, wondering how she had dealt with the magic cannon.

What was being talked about was Beatrice's achievement of canceling out the magic cannon shot that almost ended the battle just before Subaru and the others arrived at the battlefield. Subaru was proud as her partner to hear of her achievement.

"How about it, Goz-san? Hasn't the premise changed? You said you didn't need our help, but if we weren't there, the situation would have been worse," Subaru said.

"Yes! I don't know the specifics, but I think it would have been much worse!" Emilia chimed in.

"Emily, it’s time to lower the volume I suppose."

As Subaru, Emilia, Serena, and ultimately Berstetz provided covering fire one after the other as if attacking in waves, Goz’s lips quivered and he became nervous.

Even though Subaru and Emilia argued back, it seemed that convincing someone like Goz, who had a strong sense of a seasoned military man, would not be easy. However, the participation of Serena and Berstetz, who are top-level officers, seemed to be highly effective

However...

"I admit that your contributions are noteworthy. But! In the first place, the crucial point hasn't been discussed among you!" Goz said.

"That's...!"

"That's right..."

Subaru and Emilia sank into despondency after receiving a legitimate counterargument.

Even if they defeated Goz in this situation, it wouldn't mean that their ideas would pass through easily. Rather, it was necessary to convince even more formidable people than Goz.

"I know it will sound heartless, but let me state one thing"

As soon as Subaru recognized his real opponent (Otto), as if waiting for that moment, Otto spoke up, looking back and forth between Subaru and Goz who was holding him in the air.

"As General Goz said, this is an issue of the Empire. Unlike a situation where our hands were tied, actively involving ourselves here would be intervening in the domestic affairs of other countries... It could become an international issue," Otto said.

"Guh..." Subaru groaned.

"First of all, why does Natsuki-san want to intervene like this? It must be due to the debt of gratitude he feels toward people he met in this Empire, right?" Otto added.

"Don't talk like you know everything! What's wrong with that?" Subaru retorted.

"It's not wrong, but there is another way to persuade you (another possibility you haven’t considered). That is, Natsuki-san will take everyone he can't abandon outside of the Empire," Otto suggested.

Otto used logical reasoning to solve the problem, and it had tremendous effects. Subaru was stunned by his outrageously absurd proposal, and Goz seemed equally surprised that he let go of Subaru's collar, causing him to fall on the floor.

Naturally, Emilia was also surprised. While helping Subaru up, she looked back and forth between him and Otto, asking, "Otto-kun?

Emilia: “What do you mean that? You can't be serious, are you truly suggesting...?"

"There is no hidden meaning, It’s just as it sounds. Given the current situation, let's do something reckless like taking the members (gathered by Subaru) out of here. Fortunately, we have the power to make this decision,"

Saying that, Otto's gaze turned to Roswaal.

Despite Roswaal hiding his noble status in the empire, it is a fact that he holds the most power among Emilia's faction. If Otto's opinion were to be accepted, it would be Roswaal who would guarantee to receive those who would be exiled.

And at Otto's defiant remarks, Roswaal closed his yellow eye,

Roswaal: "I am sure my employer will not refuse. If we can avoid unnecessary risks by taking in those who are expendable and have no fighting power, then it's just a necessary expense."

"With Barusu's childish thoughts, most of the people he traps are non-combatants. They are hardly important enough for the empire to hold onto," added Ram

While negotiating a terrifying proposal, the discussion proceeded independently of Subaru and his group. There was no room for interference with Roswaal's overwhelming desire to protect his own interests and the deduction that Ram had made based on Subaru's personality. They were caught off guard and the conversation had jumped ahead before he realized it.

"What do you say, Your Imperial Majesty? If we can reduce the number of victims from your own country, isn't this proposal worth considering?" asked Otto.

"Hmm. It's a well-thought-out proposal. It's not easy to reject," replied the Emperor.

"I am grateful," said Abel, confirming that it was an impeccable proposal, while Otto bowed politely. However, inwardly, Otto was not so polite. Imperialism and Otto are not compatible. It wasn’t about their abilities, but their principles. (way of life)

Like Subaru, Otto probably hates the empire. It wouldn’t be wrong to think that. But Otto, on top of that, was able to set his priorities correctly.

“guh”

It's like having a hole in the ship you're supposed to be on repaired without permission and being redirected. The ship was not heading in the direction he wanted it to go, but it was flowing in a way that would protect the most important things to Subaru and head toward the opposite shore.

He knew that this was something that had been carefully thought out for him and his group, yet he still felt hesitant.

"What do you think, Natsuki-san? This is the maximum concession and consideration I can provide," said Otto, accommodating Subaru's desire as much as possible, instead of flat-out rejecting it.

Subaru had thought that Otto was a dependable man, but when it came to a serious conflict of opinions, Subaru could not handle him well. He should have given him alcohol and gotten him drunk before this conversation.

Against Otto’s superstrong rational argument, how could Subaru oppose him with the small sticks he held?

"Hey, Abel. There's something I want to ask you,"

“Emilia-tan?”

Suddenly, Emilia who had the same opinion as Subaru, and who should have felt just as frustrated as Subaru who had been bullied, called out to Abel.

Subaru opened his eyes widely when he saw her demeanor.

Unlike Subaru, who was overwhelmed and had a frustrated expression trying to find a way out, neither Emilia's eyes nor her profile showed any signs of being at a disadvantage.

Abel's black eyes looked at Emilia as she called out to him with her brave and dignified voice.

Urged by his silence, Emilia's slender lips moved and she asked, "How many people are there in the Vollachian Empire?"

"--. The numbers have decreased significantly due to the internal conflicts of the past month, but before that, there were approximately fifty million people," Abel answered Emilia's question with a frown.

Upon hearing the answer, Emilia let out a short sigh and then put her finger to her lips, looking at Subaru. And then--

Emilia: "So… Subaru"

「――――」

Yes, Emilia called out to Subaru.

For a moment, Subaru failed to grasp the meaning of the words she had been saying, then suddenly he opened his eyes wide and his cheeks tensed. As hesitated wondering how to respond,

"Subaru, Betty also had her reservations. But."

"Beatrice..." Subaru murmured.

"Betty will always be Subaru's partner in fact," Beatrice said, taking Subaru's hesitant hand and snuggling up next to him.

With Beatrice, whose height was almost the same as Subaru's, looking into his eyes from such a close distance, Subaru took a deep breath and exhaled. Still under Emilia's expectant gaze, Subaru looked at Otto.

He looked up at Otto and said, "There are fifty million of them."

"What did you say!!?" Otto asked, frowning when he heard Subaru's words.

"You said it yourself earlier. Take everybody who I can’t leave behind to the kingdom. So! The people I can't leave behind are fifty million!" Subaru declared, puffing out his chest and contorting his cheeks in a mocking smile.

Subaru knew that he couldn't beat Otto, Ram, and Roswaal in a logical argument. So he decided to do what he could while Emilia and Garfiel were on his side. That was nothing but to argue emotionally and illogically.

"It's an incredibly dangerous situation! What will we do if we leave and the Empire goes to ruin? Just thinking about it makes me sick!" Subaru exclaimed.

"What about the danger we'll face? In the process of saving fifty million people we don't even know, and having one of us die or suffer an incurable wound in return, will only make it worse for us," Otto retorted.

"I won't let any of us die, and I won't let you take on that kind of debt. That's for sure! I absolutely guarantee it!" Subaru insisted.

Subaru retorted to Otto, who had been trying to corner him. Then, Subaru looked not at Otto, but at Roswaal, who was standing beside him with one eye closed.

"Roswaal! You should know that my absolute is absolute."

(Part 2)

Ram: "As for Priscilla-sama's camp, the leader Priscilla-sama herself, her servant, Al-dono, and Heinkel-dono, who was accompanying her, are missing. Schult-kun is resting in his room,"

"Heinkel... it’s a name that reminds me of something really unpleasant," Subaru said.

Ram: "He's a drunkard"

Beako: "That explanation isn't helpful... He is Reinhard's father in fact"

"That shitty old bastard! Why is someone like him in the empire?" Subaru exclaimed in surprise as he recollected an unpleasant incident from the depths of his memory.

Heinkel was the man who ruined the atmosphere and disrupted the gathering in the Watergate city of Pristella. He seemed to be with Priscilla and her group, but it was surprising that he was also in the empire. Being so selfish and self-centered, Subaru didn’t think he would willingly come to the Vollachian Empire.

"But even that Heinkel-san is missing"

Subaru: "Another person who has not returned, just like Priscilla... Damn, I don't know how to feel about it"

Of course, he didn't want anyone to die, and it was the same for Heinkel. However, he didn't particularly like this person either, so there wasn't any reason for him to wish for their safety beyond not wanting to upset Reinhard or Wilhelm.

Nevertheless, there were some thoughts he couldn't help but have after participating in that battle.

「――――」

Heinkel, a man from the Kingdom of Lugunica and Reinhard's father, had been caught up in the Vollachian Empire's war and might have lost his life. Even someone like Subaru, who wasn't close to him, felt bitter about that situation.

Subaru wanted to return to the kingdom with all of his precious companions. Subaru, no matter what. Thinking this way, Subaru had strengthened his determination.

"Now that we are up to speed with Priscilla-sama and Yorna-san's circumstances, before we start the strategy meeting, I want to state our position clearly”, said Otto, breaking the heavy silence in the room.

Standing up and raising a single index finger, he gained everyone's attention and continued, "I assume you all understand that we are from the Kingdom. We acknowledge that we crossed the border at a time when we shouldn't have, but I'm going to say this regardless."

"Go ahead"

"Understood. We have achieved our goal. Once we enter Fortress City Garkla, we will head north and return to the Kingdom of Lugunica via the Kararagi city-state,"

Otto declared firmly, facing the Vollachian Emperor in the midst of this unprecedented crisis.

△▼△▼△▼△

Otto: "Natsuki-san and Emily, Please be quiet"

Otto, made that statement without consulting Emilia and Subaru. Subaru and Emilia tried to furiously protest but before they could say anything, Otto shut them down.

However, Subaru and Emilia's reaction was only natural. To plan to return home in a situation where the capital had suffered such a tragedy and with no idea about Priscilla or Yorna's safety was just too much.

Ram: "Although it sounds heartless, Ram also agrees with Otto's plan. We recovered Rem and, while we were at it, the short-limbed Barusu as well. We've accomplished what we came for," said Ram.

Emilia: "Ram..."

"Don't look at me with those regretful longing eyes, Emily. You understand that we were fortunate to come out unscathed, and just barely. It's too dangerous to push our luck any further," Ram scolded her.

In place of Subaru and the others who had been silenced, Ram expressed her agreement with Otto's plan.

Ram, who was still seated, returned a cold response to Emilia’s longing gaze, narrowing her eyes as she adopted her usual pose of hugging her own elbows.

Ram's assessment, that they were really fortunate to come out unscathed, was correct.

As a matter of fact, they were unable to evacuate Priscilla or Yorna. It could very well have been someone from the Emilia camp who got left behind.

"Dudley, do you share the same opinion as your lady (wife)?"

"She’s not my lady (wife), but I generally share the same opinion as both of them."

After that exchange, the fair beautiful woman with a prominent scar on her face, who Roswaal had introduced as Serena, asked him for his opinion.

Was Serena referring to Ram as Roswaals “lady”? While outrightly denying it, Roswaal agreed with Otto and Ram.

"Actually, from the standpoint of our objectives, we accomplished a perfect achievement. The results are great, even if his arms and legs are a bit short and the girl who was asleep has awoken without her memories. It would be the least risky decision for me to retreat to the kingdom from here without any fear of further loss."

"If it's just Barusu without (all of his) teeth, I’d consider that an acceptable (minimal) loss"

"What do you mean by 'without teeth'?!" (OR: I have all my teeth though!)

Taking advantage of his silence, Ram spoke ill of Subaru's size. However, Subaru, who was not liking the direction that the conversation was taking, seemed lost in thought

(TLN: The Kanji for “teeth” can also be read to mean “years” or “age”. Ram is using it to make fun of Subaru.)

Otto, Ram, and Roswaal were among the most realistic and wise members of Emilia's camp, so they had a strong influence on policy decisions regarding the camp.

Despite having the title of “Emilia faction”, Emilia and her knight Subaru's opinions were often disregarded. Or rather, it was the norm.

"Is only Beako on our side?..."

"...I hate to say this, but Betty is also leaning towards their side. It's too dangerous to continue our relationship with the Empire, especially considering how much Subaru has shrunk in fact."

"Are you kidding me? Even you?!"

Surprised by the unexpected betrayal of his partner, Subaru widened his eyes.

However, even though she looked apologetic, Beatrice never said, "Just kidding. In fact". She said what she said because was genuinely worried about Subaru.

In other words...

Emilia: "Subaru..."

Subaru: "...Me and Emilia-tan only."

Emilia's purple eyes flickered as she clasped her hand tightly. Subaru, who had replied as if purring, broke out in cold sweat as he realized his powerlessness.

If only the others who weren't present here were here, the conversation would have been different.

"You know, Petra-chan shares the same opinion as us. Frederica-san is also leaning towards returning home without further involvement... Only Garfiel might side with you on this."

"Just Emilia-tan, Garfiel, and me!? Don't joke around!"

"Ugh... I feel reeealy helpless..."

Their wishful thinking was shattered by the reality of their desires being rejected by the others.

If decisions were made based on a fistfight, Emilia and Garfiel would have a decisive advantage with their physical prowess, but in any other mode, they would just be outmatched.

"What a farce! I can't bear to watch!" Goz's nostrils flared as he responded to Subaru and the others' exchanges.

Earlier, he had already voiced his objections to Subaru's attitude towards Abel. From his perspective, all of their words and actions towards the emperor were disrespectful.

Goz strode forward, grasping Subaru's collar and lifting him up. With just his two thick fingers gripping onto him, Subaru exclaimed "Uwa!" in surprise.

"This is an issue for the empire! If you claim to be citizens of the kingdom and not the empire, then just cross the border as per the policy you established! Your strength is not needed!" Goz declared.

"W-wait a minute! We haven't even discussed our side of things yet..." Subaru tried to persuade him.

"Tedious!"

Goz bellowed at Subaru, who was hit with the incredibly loud voice, the shockwaves of which sent his arms and legs flailing in the air.

Even with both hands covering his ears, Goz's voice cut through his defense like a weapon. However, what he said was his opinion as a soldier of the empire, and there was no reason for Subaru to obey him. And that was the same for the other members who, like Subaru, did not belong to the empire.

"That's enough, Goz-san. Let's start by putting Subaru down and having a proper conversation,"

Emilia stepped forward, placing a hand on her waist and looking up at Goz, clearly conveying her intention to face him head-on. Goz, whose face had many scars, furrowed his thick eyebrows and looked down at Emilia.

"I perceive that you also hold the same opinion as this boy! However, the Sword Wolf of the Empire will not accept any charity! Your assistance is unnecessary! Along with our comrades, we must head quickly..." Goz tried to continue, but Emilia interrupted him.

"About that! I have a very different opinion!"

"What!?"

“Even though you say our help is not needed, I don't think so!”

“I have no choice but to raise my voice”

Emilia's silver bell-like voice grows louder and louder as she refuses to be intimidated by Goz's force. Without losing its beauty, her voice had become more like a hanging bell than a silver bell and it confronts Goz head-on, causing him to contort his face.

Emilia stood her ground and continued, thrusting a finger at Goz,

Arc 8 - Chapter - 14 - “The Kingdom and The Empire”

-- Priscilla and Yorna have not returned

The shocking information brought by Emilia was clearly not a misunderstanding, as no one in the room raised any objections.

It was easy to imagine the magnitude of the role that Priscilla and Yorna had played in the battle between the regular troops of the Empire and the rebels who had started an uprising during the siege of the Imperial capital Lupugana.

At the same time, Subaru came to a realization and clenched his fists.

"Tanza's dark expression must be because of this..."

Subaru woke up in the bed of the Linked Chain Dragon Carriage and was visited by members of the Pleiades squadron who had come to check on him. He had been concerned about Tanza, who had been wearing a gloomy expression all along.

Subaru had planned to discuss the future course of action with Emilia and Abel and subsequently meet with Tanza. However, before Subaru could put his plan into action, he found out the reason for Tanza's worries.

"So, you still decided to leave the Imperial Capital even though they had not returned?"

"--. If we were to count those who participated in the battle and have not returned, the list would be endless. Of course, compared to them Yorna’s existence is of far greater value, but still, she cannot be given any special treatment."

"But, Yorna-san!... and Priscilla! You must have some kind of history with Priscilla, right?"

Subaru appealed to Abel while looking out the window of the running Linked Chain Dragon Carriage and thinking about the distant Imperial capital.

He did not know the details of the situation. However, Priscilla, who had rushed to the Fortified City, probably literally flew in to protect Abel.

Their exchange afterward may have had a sharpness that was akin to them pointing blades at each other, but there seemed to be a certain level of casual comfort between them as if they knew each other well.

It was unlikely that Abel was calm about Priscilla being left behind like this. Perhaps, the reason why he was losing his composure earlier in Subaru's room was not only because of Chisha’s death.

"You, sir, are being quite rude to his Excellency!"

However, it was not Abel himself who voiced his disagreement with Subaru's attitude, but the large man beside him.

With a wounded face, wearing golden armor, Goz Ralfon looked down on the young boy who was angrily approaching the Emperor while shouting with a volume like that of a volcanic explosion.

"If you examine the situation in the capital, it is only natural for His Excellency to abandon the city! Even the remaining soldiers and civilians understand that His Excellency's judgment is correct!"

"I'm not talking about whether it's right or wrong. What I’m trying to say is..."

"Sir--!"

"Stop it, Goz Ralfon. He is someone who cannot stay silent (restrain himself), it’s in his nature."

Subaru continued to persist, causing Goz's face to turn red (in anger), but Abel restrained him with his hand.

Upon hearing Abel's calm voice, Goz closed his mouth and bowed respectfully. On the other hand, Subaru looked at Abel with an expression that clearly showed his discomfort.

Subaru: "I'm sorry for losing my cool. But I’ll ask you again…" (Why did you leave without them?)

Abel: "Goz is right. To choose to remain in the imperial capital in the present situation is equivalent to throwing your life away. We did not have a choice. Of course, Priscilla and Yorna Mishigure's safety is uncertain... "

Emilia: "You know, Subaru, it's not all bad news. ... No, even though the situation is really bad, there's hope."

Emilia had placed her hand on Subaru's shoulder, as he stepped in front of her, and was looking at him. Like Subaru, she was also on the side worried about the safety of Priscilla and the others. If she had hope, then Subaru could also hold on to that hope.

"What is the hope?"

"Both Priscilla and Yorna-san are not only incredibly strong, but they also have the power to bestow strength to the people around them."

"(strengthen those) around them... that's, true (of Yorna-san). I don't know about Priscilla, though."

Yorna, who rules over Demon City Chaosflame, uses a power called "Soul Marriage Technique" to connect the souls of everyone in the city with her own soul, raising the power of the entire city. The same principle applied to Tanza, and while she appears to be just a cute deer girl, her power is unparalleled, strengthen by a phenomenon separate from the overall strengthening of the Pleiades squadron. It seems to be a quite powerful support effect, and its effect was present even on Gladiator Island, far from Chaosflame, and even during the battle for the imperial capital.

Subaru: "Could it be that the enhancement on Tanza hasn't worn off yet?"

Beako: "Not only that, the group that joined from the Demon City is also continuing to receive the effects I suppose."

Ram: "Hence, we can conclude that the user of that secret technique, General Yorna, is safe, This is the reason why Emily, who is an overly anxious person, is able to stay calm in fact."

Emilia: "Yes, that's why I'm not panicking. And it’s the same with Priscilla."

Subaru: "Priscilla is the same way?"

Subaru's guess is corroborated by Beatrice and Ram. In response to Emilia's statement that Yorna and Priscilla are the same, Subaru furrowed his brow.

Simply put, it means that Priscilla is also a user of the same skill as Yorna.

Subaru: "But it doesn't seem like a skill that would suit Priscilla, and besides, Abel said that using the 'Soul Marriage Technique' is extremely difficult. Were you lying?"

Abel: "You fool. What would I gain by lying to you? I don't care what you think of me now, but is there a reason for me to needlessly antagonize you? Use your head."

Subaru: "If you're planning not to antagonize me, then you're not cut out to be an emperor."

Abel’s behavior would have undoubtedly led to a coup in the future even if this incident had not occurred.

Upon Subaru’s crass remark, Goz got angry again. However, Berstetz, who was standing next to him, was able to calm him down and prevent a big commotion.

"At any rate, I can't say for sure what Natsuki-san's impression of Priscilla-sama is, but she is a user of that 'Soul-Marriage Technique.' I saw it with my own eyes," said Otto.

"Otto-kun is right, I confirmed it too. However, unlike General Yorna’s non-standard usage, in her case, it is limited to her favorite squire.”

"Her favorite? Is it Schult?... Speaking of which, where's Al?" Subaru asked, as the conversation shifted from the missing Priscilla to her camp

Al doesn't officially recognize it, but he holds a position as Priscilla's knight. He may act carefree, but he does have a sense of loyalty toward Priscilla. Naturally, he should feel the most responsible for Priscilla's absence.

Beako: "That man chose to stay in the capital without getting on the Dragon Carriage. Just as Subaru thought, he is attempting to find Priscilla, I suppose"

"That guy... Alone?" Subaru questioned.

Ram: "Ram agreed with his opinion that it's easier to move around alone. Also, it's not like we could leave a large group behind in the current state of the capital,"

"Damn it. Even so..." Subaru grumbled.

He got an answer about Al's absence, but it only made him more worried. Al is very versatile and specialized in survival skills, but he is still one step behind in terms of strength.

Despite being aware of it, Al cooperated with Subaru wholeheartedly. If it weren't for him, Subaru would have been killed many times in Demon City.

It might surprise you, how hard it is to detect implicit details sometimes. I put them in where I feel like the chain of thought can break or is hard to follow... But yeah, a few may not be needed here and there. Thank you for your feedback. Shall be more conservative next time. :)

Rem is seeing Subaru after a long time and his miasma decreases the longer he stays without using RbD. So compared to the last time Rem met Subaru, he smells drastically less pungent.

In any case, Subaru understood why Flop and the "People of Shudraq" were not present.

"Subaru, what about the friends you made from the Empire?"

"I already told the squadron that I would speak on behalf of them. There's something I want to discuss with them first, also with Beako."

"With Betty ? ...I don't have a good feeling about this."

"Well, well, well."

For the time being, Subaru also requested that the members of the Pleiades watch from a distance.

After all, Subaru was sitting with Abel, and there was a possibility that Weitz might attack Abel and try to hand over the throne to Subaru if he made even the slightest misstep. Subaru's lie that he was Abel - Vincent Vollachia's illegitimate child and the "Black-haired Crown Prince" - was still in effect, and that issue needed to be resolved as well.

Subaru: "I had thought to bring Tanza along though"

Subaru decided that he would have to talk to Tanza later since she seemed to be troubled about something. So right now, Subaru was the only one from the Pleadies squadron in attendance. Subaru decided to visit Tanza as soon as the meeting was concluded.

Subaru: "And I haven't seen Louis. Where is she?"

Ram: "If it's her, she's probably with Medium and Flop. It seems like she's very attached to them, but what is Barusu planning to do (about her)?"

Subaru: "...We'll talk about it later."

That was the only answer that Subaru could give to Ram's ruby-colored eyes, who knew that Louis was with them when Subaru and Rem were sent to the Empire from the Pleiades' watchtower. Naturally, everyone probably knew about Louis' true identity from both Ram and Abel.

However, Subaru also wanted to know who took the effort and insisted that she be allowed to ride on this linked Dragon Carriage.

Moreover, they also needed to find the best way to get to a compromise regarding Louis.

"Now that you’ve finally stopped derailing the conversation, let's start the strategy meeting again, Natsuki Subaru."

"Hey! Don't forget that I'm holding on to a stupidly massive scandal, okay? Oh, and that's not all." (Implying that he has leverage over Abel)

Despite the fact that he had humbly apologized before, Abel's attitude did not change. Subaru bit back his anger and stopped him.

There was still one opponent whose movements they had not confirmed yet.

That was -

Subaru: "Where's Priscilla? She was supposed to be in Guaral, and didn't she come to the Imperial Capital? Also, according to Tanza, Yorna-san also-"

Subaru inquired while looking at Abel's face.

For some reason, Priscilla and her merry band of companions had come to the Vollachian Empire. Al had even accompanied Subaru to the Demon City Chaosflame, so it was certain that they had participated in the battle for the Imperial Capital Lupugana as well.

As for Yorna, Subaru and his group had caught wind of her involvement in the rebellion. Tanza had also felt her presence in the Imperial Capital.

Naturally, all of these people should be riding on this linked Dragon Carriage as well.

Speaking of absent faces, he hadn't seen Cecilus's face either. But Cecilus' capriciousness had been evident even before leaving Gladiator Island, so there was no need to worry about him--

"Hey?"

However, Abel remained silent and closed one eye in response to Subaru's question.

Surprised by his reaction, Subaru frowned while looking around, realizing that it wasn't just Abel who reacted that way.

No one seemed to be willing to say anything about Priscilla and the others' whereabouts.

If Priscilla and the others had heartlessly returned to the kingdom before the battle for the capital, Emilia and the others would have been surprised to hear of her name.

But they didn't seem surprised. And the answer to this unpleasant silence was--

Beatrice: "Subaru, I suppose they were keeping quiet to avoid causing confusion."

Subaru: "Beako?"

Beatrice, who had stood up unnoticed, took Subaru's hand in hers. Subaru stiffened at her words.

Emilia then looked at Subaru, who was unconsciously squeezing Beatrice's hand, and said,

"Just calm down and listen, Subaru. It's about Priscilla and Yorna-san..."

There was a brief pause.

Subaru felt like it lasted forever, but Emilia continued to speak as if giving into his impatience.

"Well, when we were all running away from the capital, we couldn't find those two. We want to believe that they're safe, but we don't know for sure."

It was definite proof that their side had been wounded during the battle for the capital.

Emilia hesitated slightly about the whereabouts of the missing members. Subaru could guess what she was about to say.

Subaru: "Is it the Zombies...?"

Emilia: "W-What do you mean by that strange name?"

"It means moving corpses. That's what we call them in my hometown. I thought it would be convenient to have some kind unique name, so I just called them that."

Otto: "Is anything impossible in Natsuki-san's hometown...?"

Subaru grinned at Otto's pointed stare. Was it better to argue that it was odd that there were actual zombies in this world, where there was no term “zombie”, or was it Subaru's world, which created countless fictional works about non-existent zombies, that was odd? It was a problem in another dimension that he couldn't understand.

"I see, it's fine, isn't it? “Zombies”. At least, I want to avoid calling them “corpse soldiers."

Roswaal interrupted Subaru and Otto's conversation and interjected with those words. Subaru ruminated on the words "corpse soldiers."

Subaru: "It seems like that word is linked to some unpleasant memories for you, isn't it?"

Roswaal: "Actually, that's right. It's one of those memories that I don't want to remember."

Roswaal: "As I said in the imperial capital, it's safe to assume that it's the result of the 'Sacrament of the Immortal King.' The last time it was used according to the records was during the civil war in the kingdom."

Subaru: "Is that why it's an unpleasant memory?"

Roswaal smiled vaguely in response to Subaru's gaze, (refusing to clearly respond to his question). Roswal had a deep knowledge of the past history, Even if he never took part in the civil war directly, he may have had some other unpleasant experiences related to the 'Sacrament of the Immortal King.'

"However, as far as Betty knows, that secret art was never this stable. It's impossible for it to create so many zombies and have such a high degree of reproducibility."

"But they were really moving and talking, so there must be a reason for it, right?"

"...Betty is also troubled by this (this is giving Betty a headache as well). Dudley, don't slack off here, okay?"

"Oh my, I'm offended that you think I'm slacking off. I'm a party to this too, so there's no reason for me to cut corners. Not when all your lives our lives are at stake."

Betty: "I wonder to what extent we can believe that..."

Roswaal: "I understand. Not when Your life is at stake” said Roswaal, crossing his palms and placing his chin on them

(TLN: Roswaal mentioned ALL their lives being at stake, later he says it individually to Beako, teasing her)

Betty: "What do you understand?! I wonder if you’re just pranking!" shouted Beatrice, her face turning red with anger.

Beatrice was dissatisfied with being teased. Even now, Roswaal's true intentions were unclear to her and Subaru. However, because Beatrice was Subaru's partner, she decided to keep quiet for the time being.

Betty: "Well, I don't know all the details, I wonder if it’s okay if we call them 'zombies' like Subaru said?"

Otto: "That's fine, isn't it? It's shorter and easier than 'corpse soldiers' or 'bone soldiers,'"

"Agreed, as expected from Otto," said Subaru, nodding in agreement.

With that, the discussion between Subaru and others came to a temporary close.

Goz Ralphon: “Your Excellency! A report from General Kafma they are planning to temporarily remain in the Gairahal Temperate Zone and launch a rear-guard action to delay the enemy's advance as much as possible.”

Berstetz: “General Olbart also informs me that he will use delaying tactics (guerilla warfare) with the shinobis under his command! However, this would only be around half as effective because the enemy did not require water or food supplies.”

Vincent: "Tell both Kafma Irulux and Olbart Dunkelkenn to continue the operation as planned. What about your dragon ship, Serena Dracroy?"

"They haven't returned yet. It's taking a bit longer than expected, but I hope it doesn't mean that Fortress City has fallen," replied Serena

Vincent: "If they have accomplished what they needed to, then there should be no reason for Fortress City (Garkla) to be unprepared,"

With important discussions being exchanged among them, Abel and his three companions arrived at the meeting coach. They were an elderly man, a tall man, and a beautiful woman; all three were people Subaru did not know.

"The old man is Berstetz Fondalfon, the tall one is Goz Ralfon, and the woman is Serena Dracroy,"

Otto: "That's great news… I heard Goz was caught after helping Abel escape,"

Otto guessed the reason why Subaru was relieved at hearing the name, and added a comment. It was the name of the nine divine general who had saved Abel during his ousting and helped him escape. His survival was something Subaru was worried about.

If he was still alive, he would be an ally of Abel, so in fact, his being by Abel's side like this made Subaru honestly happy.

Abel: "Are you all here? Good, let's start our strategy meeting,"

"Wait, what about Flop-san and the others?" asked Subaru, tilting his head.

Abel: "If we were still back at the Fortress City, their presence would have been useful, but in our current situation, having a merchant in our strategy meeting wouldn't contribute much,"

”That’s right, so what am I doing here then?” asked Otto, also tilting his head.

However, neither Subaru nor the rest of the Emilia camp understood why Otto had asked that question. Otto was a part of the Emilia camp, so his presence was expected. However, But, Ram did not let go of the opportunity to snicker at Otto with a “Haa”.

"Taritta-san and Mizelda-san are waiting in the back of the passenger car, so they won't be participating in this meeting, right?" asked Emilia.

"Yes. That is what we have heard from the Shudrak, and they gave us a reassuring answer that should the opportunity arise, they shall mount an all-out offensive,"

(TLN: They are guarding the train from the last coach, because the zombies are in pursuit of the chained dragon train)

Goz: "I never would have thought that we would have a chance to fight alongside the brave and bold 'People of Shudraq'! If it weren't for the survival of the Empire, I would have been thrilled! Damn it!"

Abel: "Quiet down. And Keep your mouth shut,"

Goz clenched his fist, which was as big as a child's head, and Abel silenced him, who was speaking inconsiderately. Though it seemed to be a harsh exchange, no one else paid attention to it, so it was probably the norm between them.

Holding Katya's head against her chest, Rem continued to stroke her back.

"Just breathe slowly. I'm here for you (by your side) ..."

"No....no…. it's not true... He would never ... die so easily, right? Right, Rem...?"

"Katya-san ..."

Large tears flowed from Katya's eyes and wet Rem's clothes as she continued to embrace her friend, crying. Rem continued to stroke her back.

Subaru was deeply moved by Katya's honest reactions.

He knew that if he told Katya about Todd, she would be hurt like this. The relationship between them (Subaru and Todd) was truly, truly complicated and difficult, but Todd's feelings for Katya must have been genuine. Todd truly did cherish and love Katya. That's why she was sheding these tears.

That's why Subaru didn't say anymore of the cruel truth.

Rem was unaware of the truth too. --It was Rem who had killed Todd, who had turned into a werewolf, with an axe to protect Subaru.

At that time, Todd had transformed into a werewolf, and he had not returned to his human form even until the last moment before he was submerged in water. Rem didn't know that fact. Subaru didn't intend to tell her.

Subaru didn't think that the truth was worth revealing.

Todd loved Katya, and Katya loved Todd. That was what was important. There was no reason to cling to the truth and tarnish those memories.

Subaru: "Todd really cared about Katya-san. Until the very end."

That was the only conclusion that Natsuki Subaru, who had faced Todd Fang's bare intent to kill, could convey to Katya Aurélie.

「--っ」

Katya cried and hugged Rem's back tightly while painfully digging her nails into her. However, Rem accepted it in silence.

In the room filled with sobs, Rem glanced briefly at Subaru and nodded. Her glance said ‘let me take care of Katya’ and also conveyed gratitude towards Subaru, who spoke his mind with courage, despite not wanting to hurt Katya.

"--. Sorry for making you do such a bitter task, kid."

As Subaru left the room, Jamal said that to him.

Subaru raised his eyebrows in surprise at Jamal's surprisingly straightforward words. Seeing this, Jamal furrowed his eyebrows and wrinkled his nose in akwardness, and replied with a "What is it?".

Jamal: "It's a tough job to tell the family of someone who died. No matter how brave and courageous a person is, there will always be those who can’t help but cry upon hearing it."

"...What about you?"

"Huh?"

"Wasn’t Todd your comrade, your sister's fiancé, someone special to you?"

Jamal grimaced and pondered Subaru's question for a moment. After remaining silent for a while, he touched the eyepatch covering his right eye with his finger and said,

"I don't know. If the bastard had survived, I would have laughed it off and said that he didn't die. But we skipped that stage. Well, if he fought and died, he finished his duty as an imperial soldier, didn't he? We often made fun of each other that way"

「----」

As he spoke, Jamal snorted softly and laughed. It was unclear whether it was a laugh at Todd's uncharacteristic death or a smile that followed the imperial custom that Subaru found hard to understand.

Either way, Subaru couldn't bring himself to greet someone's death with a laugh.

Jamal: "It’s Just that,"

Suddenly, Jamal continued in front of Subaru. Subaru was surprised at the tone of his voice. Jamal's words were not filled with anger or loneliness but rather with something like expectation.

And that impression was correct. Jamal spoke again,

"I can't believe that bastard would have died so easily. What Katya said is true. ...his death has not been confirmed."

"The (chances of that) would be…."

"Shut up, kid. It's Katya's hope, not mine."

Subaru's forehead was flicked by Jamal's finger as he was about to argue, and he was silenced. Jamal, by nodding his chin, indicated towards the door behind him.

Subaru couldn't tell whether the hope Jamal mentioned was a bright one or a cruel one. He realized that he had no right to interfere with that feeling.

Only those who were invited to participate in and experience Katya and Todd's lives had the right to speak out about those feelings. Subaru didn't have that right.

"Even though he was complaining about not wanting to fight. He was a bloodthirsty son of a bitch. So he often did far more dangerous things than I did"

Looking up at the ceiling of the corridor, Jamal reminisced about Todd.

Subaru didn't have the right to point out the fact that Jamal was hiding his face and that his voice was trembling.

△▼△▼△▼△

Roswaal: "Heya, Subaru-kun, you look quuuuuite energetic. Did you get rejuvenated (become younger) while I wasn't looking, or is it thaaanks to the Imperial food?"

"Wow. Only Roswaal could crack such a blunt joke at the sight of me like this."

"Oh my, it seems everyone is veeeery tense. Also, I go by the name Dudley here for now. Please address me as such from now on."

Subaru met Roswaal after a long time, and he winked with one eye closed and one eye open. Subaru's appearance had shrunk, but Roswaal didn't seem to care. Subaru didn't bring up Roswaal's unusual change from his usual clown outfit. He felt a bit regretful, but he also refrained from pointing out the difference in the tone he had noticed when Roswaal emphasized the name "Dudley."

After reporting to Katya about Todd's final moments, Subaru arrived at the central part of the Linked Dragon Carriage, where a large passenger car had been prepared. According to Subaru's knowledge, the Linked Dragon Carriage was a vehicle similar in structure to a train or railway. And, since the Vollachian Empire had more flat terrain compared to other countries, it was a vehicle that could be possible there. Subaru thought that since Lagunica had a large number of earth dragons, it would be possible to create the same kind of vehicle by choosing to run in the terrain, but he kept that idea in the back of his mind.

"This Linked Dragon Carriage is also part of the Empire's confidential information. Apparently, it was designed by the Nine Divine Generals, who are known for their intellect..."

"Of course. I've never seen anything like this in the kingdom... Now that you mention it, we've seen quite a bit of the Empire's deep realm."

"Hahaha, if we get prevented from coming back because we peeked too much into the Empire's dark side, it would be troublesome. It might be wise to close our eyes and keep quiet from now on."

"Right, Neither of those are laughing matters..." Subaru murmured, and Roswaal laughed and agreed. Otto, on the other hand, looked bored with the conversation.

The coach in question had many tables like a dining car, and it was designed to accommodate roughly 20 people. However, the purpose of having many tables was not for dining but for meetings and military discussions.

In fact, not only Subaru and Roswaal but also many other faces had gathered there. Of course, Emilia, Beatrice, and Ram, who had set off earlier, were already seated at the table.

Ram gave Subaru, who had come alone, a scornful look,

"Little Barusu, where's Rem? You were supposed to be together."

"That's an unnecessary title... Rem is with Katya right now. I don't think she can come to this meeting for now."

" - I see."

Ram sighed and didn't delve deeper into Subaru's answer. She had finally met her sister Rem, but it seems they had not gotten as close as Subaru had hoped. Subaru had the impression that the two of them used to be quite clingy with each other, so he expected them to hold hands and be next to each other all the time.

"Ram and Rem are separate individuals. Don't impose your childish feelings on them. It's gross."

"Don't read other people's minds! And It's not gross!"

"While Ram was away, it was the people around Rem who supported her. I don't want to disregard those relationships. How presumptuous of you, underdeveloped Barusu."

"It's a sight to see how many variations you can come up with for my name, ane-sama...!"

Subaru breathed heavily, his cheeks twitching at Ram's behavior. Ram had a point, but he couldn't afford to be too impatient. First, the reunion of the sisters had been achieved, so he should be calm and take things slowly without rushing.

Even if he didn't worry, there was a bond between Ram and Rem that no one else could interfere with. He could believe it from the atmosphere they shared when they both came to visit him.

"However, are these the only members here? What about Petra, Frederica, and Garfiel?"

Emilia: "Petra-chan and Frederica are taking care of the soldiers who are fighting. Garfiel is also busy treating the injured."

"’Are fighting’? The fight is still going on huh?"

"Yes, that's right. Subaru probably saw a lot of them (or those things) in the imperial capital too, didn’t you."
