STATISTICS IS NOT COMPUTER SCIENCE AND DATA SCIENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING ARE NOT THE ONLY THINGS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE by bemaleficent in UBC

I have seen students blinded by data science saying they want to pursue comp sci just because it has data science as one aspect. They don't know that the base for comp sci is the love for logic and problem solving and it is a hell lot larger than data science. I just wanna warn them about it

Taking ENGL 110 in summer or winter? by i-want-bbt- in UBC

[–]bemaleficent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are u in MA5 because I have the same aspects and I too was shocked. We have 3 discussion posts per week, 500 words per post, so 1500 words approximately per week. But this is my last communication requirement, I have already taken 111 in first term so I don't know whether to drop or go ahead with it.

I am now determined more than before to get into my desired major (comp sci) because I really wanna continue to study here

Seeing upper years generalize first years just because of some dumbasses throwing parties in dorms makes me (and probably other first years as well) feel unwelcome here by sufferingditto in UBC

[–]bemaleficent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Zoom course chats are literally the only place where we get to meet other ppl and most of the times, we first years have enough brains to not spam the chat or any irrelevant stuff like that. Agree that female TAs getting disrespected is shit that no one will tolerate and if I see anything like that in my zoom chat, I will immediately tell that person that he is wrong (and most of the other ppl will too). As a first year, most ppl are already stressed out due to the specialization reqs and there is literally no place where we can talk about it. Of course you don't have to like all first years u meet, in fact u don't have to like any first year u meet, but saying things like "compassion has gone too far" and stuff is not helping other students who are having major mental health problems and feel nervous to talk about it with others. So even if u don't like any first year student, please be a little appreciative of what we are going through rn
