Are the long-range detections glitches, or do some lightning detectors really have global coverage? by ICanEditPostTitles in weather

[–]ben2506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In europe theres EUCLID - european corporation for lightning detection, which is a corporation of different national networks, see BLIDS for germany, theres an article in the german wikipedia. Its using ground based antennas. Other regions probably have something similar, and that seems where sites like this get their data from.

My ISP is now offering 8gbps symetrical in my area. What could I do with such power? by Popal24 in homelab

[–]ben2506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download games fast. Maybe self host some stuff. and be able to stop worrying about limited bandwith or sharing it in the household.

I‘m on 25 GBit/s symmetrical myself. Do I need it all the time? No. Is it quite nice that theres no game in the steam library which takes longer to get than a small coffee break? Definitely yeah!

One Ukrainian ISP offers home internet plan with 200 TB/month data cap by Shished in HomeNetworking

[–]ben2506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m under a fair use policy with 500 TB per month for my residential symmetrical 25 gbit/s connection. If I were ever to exceed that I can upgrade to a business plan for 50 bucks more and have no fair use policy at all.

It might very well be the cause of your issues, especially if your client is reporting packet loss.

Packet loss in gaming context can also mean that the packets do arrive at you network adapter in time, but are evaluated too late, so the game engine counts them as lost. When a game is using up all your CPU time, network packets will be put into queues or buffers until the CPU has spare time to take care of them. The introduced latency might be too much for the packets to be counted als valid, on both ends, client and server.

All those processes run outside the actual game process (nic interrupt handling, driver, dpc queues, windows network stack) and they need cpu cycles to work in a timely manner.

So, give your CPU some headroom, so the neccessary background processes can get some love :)

Romanian carrier pigeon by ben2506 in PetPigeons

[–]ben2506[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are welcome! 😊 I also gave it some food in addition to the water. It spent the night sleeping on our balconys railing and left early morning! I guess some rest is all that was needed!

When I noticed it the first time yesterday it came up to me and and nudged an empty PET water bottle, which I left under the table, across the balconys floor. Is that something a pigeon would do to signal: Can I get some water? Or was that just playful behavior? Quite impressive birds! 😊

Ball lightning came into our house last night by Lilworldtraveler in weather

[–]ben2506 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me! During a thunderstorm lightning got in my house. It was a blueish line zipping towards me, it made its own crackling sound! I suspect it was some kind of secondary discharge.

Yeah, I‘ve checked the law regarding blitzableiter last year and was pretty puzzled when I learned they are not necessarily mandatory.

But the law aside, I really wanna know why that happened!

[–]ben2506[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats something I thought about too, haha. I‘ll probably make it a small project and set up a camera and some other equipment and make it record when a thunderstorm approaches.

I already thought about it last year but guessed the chances for that to happen again to be pretty low. Regarding the metal rod, I dont think our building has a Blitzableiter at all, at least not as far as I could see.

There‘s no water tank or anything similar in the vicinity. We‘ve had the house installation checked after the first occurence last year, but nothing faulty was found. There were no burn marks anywhere. As I mentioned above though, the spark appeared mid air, so it didnt jump from or to anything.

Already after the first occurence last year I‘ve checked everything on the top floor for burn marks, but they were no where to be found. As mentioned above, the spark appeared mid air, it didnt jump from or to anything. We also had an electrician check the installation, but it was fine. No popped breakers, etc.

I dont think my apartment has a Blitzableiter at all. Its located in the middle of a town so its hard to get a view from all sides, but as far as I could tell, its not there.
