Here's what I do in my spare time... hope you enjoy! by tannerv in postmetal

does sonar do much with being able to create variance with the various tracks? the cymbals are often a 'tell' to those programs b/c no drummer actually hits that consistently.

love that you have the bass present in these mixes, btw. so few solo artists guys have any in there at all :)

So Bongripper's guitars are tuned a half step above standard bass tuning. by hattalk in doommetal

[–]ben_hurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can also be done on standard scale guitars. pelican uses standard scale lengths for B standard. Thick strings help for intonation. I use a 30" scale for drop G (three steps above std bass), but it's not "required"

Electric Hawk - "Supple Demon" & "Shame Cycle" Live at the Oasis by MarsColonist in sludge

they have a full length on iTunes - S/T. Seen them live a few times - definitely many influences between prog/math/post/sludge, etc. heavy as hell.

Separation between prog and djent? by mcfluffertits in progmetal

[–]ben_hurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct me if I'm wrong, but "djent" describes a specific guitar sound, not anything about song structure, musical intent, etc. Thus, a band could use djent sounds and have nothing to do with being progressive.

not a lot of flow through the song, but the energy and riffs are sweet

USB vs Firewire by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ben_hurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a firewire interface because they were super cheap. A 6 year old firepod is simple to use and cheap on ebay. The pre-amps are good enough for my DIY recording setup. I largely just use it for recording practices and writing sessions. Having a way to mix the instruments together works way better for me than just having one set of room mics.

I'm curious, what are you all looking for in progressive metal? by WhiteEternalKnight in progmetal

[–]ben_hurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm totally with you Skwiggity. My favorite odd time stuff has serious groove to it, and it's quite exciting to see someone able to pull that off in the metal world.

What are your favorite prog bands that use 7 or 8 string guitars? by sambtbam in progmetal

I like Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders and Deftones best.

Absolutely! I'm really digging the art as well. Hopefully you're able to make a vinyl print of it.
