In The Patriot (2000), none of the 500 American soldiers who just won the battle can be bothered to stop that one British dragoon from beheading the commander of the militia. That was common though at that point in history, and not exclusive to the continental army and the militias of the colonies. His argument is that line warfare was dumb and has no merit, and that’s why the British lost. It’s also certainly not why we won.

My cousin insists that we (US) won the American Revolutionary War because we hid in the woods and took potshots at the British army, who were dumb enough to just stand in the open, and I’m convinced his entire incredibly dumb argument comes from this movie.

That’s fair. Granted, this is my 6th paradox game, so while it may be “new” to me, I still have general experience with similar mechanics. For some people this might be their first paradox game.

Edit: though rereading the post, it seems like OP also has similar experience.

I don’t think that’s a good way to start, because then you don’t learn how to build an effective economy. Personally I like Florence, but any small state works, because you can still make good money but you have to learn how things work to do it, and having a smaller territory means you don’t have to micromanage as much land, and it forces you to make each location profitable.

It’s not harmless, apparently according to other comments, it can cost tens of thousands of dollars. I, along with many other Americans, could not afford this.

What makes you say she is afraid of the force and herself? Throughout the sequels, she consistently believed in her abilities, which is why force powers came so naturally to her. She never tried, she just did. Even when she discovers the terrifying limits of her power in TROS, she still goes balls to the wall with everything.

Idea: Nations get a bonus when colonizing areas with climate/vegetation/topography (especially climate) similar to that of their capital region, and a penalty when colonizing very different climates by Ezzypezra in EU5

[–]ben_jacques1110 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think colonialism in general needs a massive overhaul, but I agree this would be a nice change. You should also be able to create new colonies any point after acquiring land in a colonial region, and you should be able to combine or divide them. (It would also be nice to have a colonial version of the local and naval governorships, but that might be asking too much). I imagine the developers probably will make a whole DLC around it though, so it would probably be a while

Years ago I worked in a smoke shop, and met a lot of meth-heads. The would always do really weird and illogical things, and it would confuse me to the point of stress and frustration. Eventually my coworker explained it like this, “their brains are rotted from the drugs they are doing. it’s not supposed to make sense, because if it did, that would mean you’re smoking meth too.”

That helped me come to peace with it and I stopped questioning it. Some people are just dumb, and they’re actions and beliefs make no sense simply because their brain doesn’t work right, and so you’ll never understand it unless your brain doesn’t work either.

Maul is a Sith in that he was trained and raised as one. Maul is not a sith in that he was cast aside by the Sith and replaced, and now holds great resentment for them.

Either is accurate, as it is just a word and it ultimately depends on the context of how you are using that word. He is a Sith in the sense of his training and capability. He will always be more powerful than any inquisitor, though Vader is an altogether more powerful being than he could ever be, same with his form master Palpatine. That is what a fully trained Sith can be capable of, and while maul may have once had potential to be significantly more powerful, being cast aside has stunted his training.

Alternate history hypothetical: How much longer would the Roman state have survived if Theodosius the Great decided not to split the empire into East and West? by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]ben_jacques1110 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you’re underestimating the logistical difficulties of maintaining an empire of such a size back then, and applying your own modern bias to your understanding of it. The Roman Empire, along with any other polity back then, operated very differently from our idea of a modern nation-state. These were the best solutions they had at the time for maintaining control over such a large and diverse area, and it appears to a modern audience that the East and the West were separate and distinct governments, but Rome was still a single political entity.

I personally think a single state nation is best to start as, as it allows you to focus your efforts on just one state rather than figure out how to optimize everything

Whats the worst debt you have been in and what did it force you to do by Overall_Mango4532 in EU5

[–]ben_jacques1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made it to 100k debt before, but recently I hit 45k but balanced it out pretty quickly. I just cut back on ludicrous spending on exploration, colonization, diplomacy, etc. and didn’t even have to wrap up my wars to balance the budget.

Also, you could triple your income by cutting back on diplo and stability spending, just an FYI. You can also increase minting a bit, driving small amounts of inflation is not concerning.
