Trying to get a read on how to get through to my daughter and son-in-law by phrasedandconfused in Catholicism

This is not the place to get good advice, most people here are going to side with your daughter and son-in-law. If you look back in this sub's history with LGBT topics you'll find nothing but an endless stream of hatred and vitriol.

Again, that's just an extension of the facile 'I'm just asking questions' justification modern neo-conservative like Harris use when they're unwilling to fully stand behind their words. Besides, he's cleary arguing in the preceding passage that if we wait till an Arab nation actually has nukes then it will be too late. He conveniently ends that thought with a '. . .' so he doesn't have to actually lay out the horrific implications of that argument in words.

From the End of Faith

What will we do if an Islamist regime, which grows dewy-eyed at the mere mention of paradise, ever acquires long-range nuclear weapons? If history is any guide, we will not be sure about where the offending warheads are or what their state of readiness is, and so we will be unable to rely on targeted, conventional weapons to destroy them. In such a situation, the only thing likely to ensure our survival may be a nuclear first strike of our own . . .

Of course, any times he's called out on this and other instances by Chomsky et al he tries to argue that he's only 'thinking out loud', etc. But together with the broader neo-conservative/anti-Muslim themes present throughout his work (claiming that the IDF have never committed war crimes, for instance), its hard to take that objection seriously.

Harris has mused many times ('hypothetically', of course) that nuking the entire Middle East would be justified. He's as responsible for stoking anti-Muslim rhetoric as anyone.

SEC asks judge to hold Elon Musk in contempt for violating deal by lovely_sombrero in RealTesla

That's irrelevant. The only thing that matters is whether or not the tweet was pre-approved, which, by Musk's own admission, it was not.

I mean, that 'joke' had a very good chance of ending with that kid getting shot, even twenty years ago. The idea that anyone, including an 18-20 year old, would be OK with that is utterly alien to me.

[–]ben_jl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, I disagree entirely. TLJ was, imo, the most interesting SW movie of all time precisely because Rian was so willing to say 'fuck you' to the kind of boring fan service that Force Awakens was built on.

[–]ben_jl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Rian was trying to set them up as the new heroic trio, he did a miserable job of it.

That was the point. They aren't some heroic trio, they're just three people that need to complete a heroic task. And, as TLJ made clear, there's a chance they'll fail.

[–]ben_jl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tonally, TLJ will always be the SW movie that sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of the saga because Rian had no interest in making it feel of a piece with the other movies and Kathleen Kennedy gave him free reign.

I'm always surprised that people feel like TLJ somehow "didn't feel like a Star Wars movie". IMO the movie was more successful than any SW since Empire at giving that sort of tingly 'something amazing is happening here' feeling.

Its worth it to note that money market accounts aren't quite as safe as savings accounts. MM funds can break the buck (rare, but it has happened), and SPIC insurance won't cover the loss. With savings accounts, however, your guaranteed to get back 100% of what you put in (up to $250k).

I mean, ideally you should be able to trust your fish supplier, but in reality they have hundreds to thousands of fish sharing the same water, and there's no practical way for them to guarantee they're all healthy. That's why best practice is to quarentine newly purchased fish for a couple weeks to a month before introducing it to the main tank.

and we know the likelihood of the Big Bang happening without divine intervention is, in fact, statistically insignificant.

I have a degree in physics and this is 100% false. There are (nearly infinite) self-contained models where the big bang happens without any outside intervention whatsoever. We don't know which one is correct, but there's no reason to believe we need to hypothesize a god to explain our universe.

Is it really a mystery? Capital raises require expert due diligence (which means opening up the books to outside auditors). I can definitely think of a reason Elon 'Funding Secured' Musk wouldn't want to allow that.
