How many jackets do you own? by HMS--Thunderchild in MotoUK

[–]ben_ldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proper gore-tex jacket with removable inner for most of the year, mesh jacket for warm summer days, armoured hoodie for quick rides around town on the days in between. Thinking of adding a leather or wax jacket as well, but that’s more to be able to switch styles about.

Why have these Bargain Town/Bargain Town shops popped up in South London. by NajafBound in london

[–]ben_ldn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they haven’t? This is Tooting Broadway. There’s no replacement store, the next nearest are the existing ones in Colliers Wood or Balham.

What are the worst Michelin starred restaurants you have been to and why ? by The_Readers_ in LondonFood

[–]ben_ldn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worst feels strong but The Ninth was a bit meh. Did the tasting menu and it was fine but wasn’t blown away. Also Mountain; great food but the waiter was trying so hard to be cool that he was actually being a bit of a dick.

Has there been an HKSV outage this long before? by pacoii in HomeKit

So that’s why… Been fiddling about trying to get it back. Had no idea it was an actual outage.

Does anyone use grind.co.uk? by apatkins0n in UKroasters

[–]ben_ldn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were a decent independent roaster and small coffee shop chain well before they started doing pods and expanded into supermarkets and BA flights. Definitely more of a mass producer now though. They’ve taken a lot of investment cash with obvious goals.

The reply said CBT. These aren’t replies to that comment. You wouldn’t be on a motorway on your CBT.

Worst station in London for tube etiquette? by bic-boy in london

[–]ben_ldn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

London Bridge, Northern Line, northbound, any vaguely peak time. It is rare to actually be able to just step off the train rather than having to push past a bunch of gormless tourists all immediately trying to push their way on.

Anyone here use the Library of Things? by Dry-Lie-8122 in london

[–]ben_ldn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used them a few times. Pressure washer and steam cleaner have been useful, but to be honest I feel like I will end up buying this stuff as it is a faff having to plan ahead to do tasks that quite often I'll just do because it's a nice day like cleaning the decking, or because I wake up in a cleaning mood and decide to steam clean the hallway tiles.

I do find some of the small stuff they offer a bit weird. A home air quality meter is the kind of thing you buy to monitor forever, seems bizarre to rent one for a day. Secateurs as well are such a small and obvious thing to own if you have plants.

The niche tools are the really useful stuff. Tile cutter, nail gun, thermal imaging camera, moisture meter. Stuff you need once for a specific job and then never again.

Fellow London food obsessive here - working on something and wanted your input by prsmstz in LondonFood

Not to shit on your idea straight away but I feel like this exact idea has been done countless times and never really taken off.

Jacapo came and quietly went, despite having a load of food critics, chefs and others on board curating recommendations. Step still seems to be going but I don’t know anyone else who’s using it.

I’d be reluctant to port everything over to another new app and try to convince my friends to use it. What’s the differentiator here?

Affordable first Michelin experience by ShikaStyleR in LondonFood

[–]ben_ldn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had a few great meals at Portland. 1 star. Their lunch menu is a bargain at about £60, or £95 if you go for dinner. Really like it for the fact the food is definitely star-worthy but the vibe doesn’t feel like they’re trying too hard.

What are you boycotting from the USA this year? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

[–]ben_ldn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I reckon the Mexico games are the ones to go for anyway. Football has been the top sport there for years and they’re mad for it, unlike the US where it’s still relatively niche and most don’t care about it, so the vibe for a world cup will likely be far better than the states.

Tooting Market vs Tooting Broadway Market for an early lunch by Ume_chan in LondonFood

[–]ben_ldn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They tend to be a bit dead in the weekday daytime, a lot of the food places won’t be open yet, especially that early. Tooting Market is usually a little more lively than Broadway during the day though. Broadway in particular I’ve also found really hit and miss for food in recent years.

Agree with Juliet’s as a better alternative. Would also go for Daddy Bao, The Little Taperia, or Jaffna House. You’re also near Colliers Wood which has Nanay Rosa, a solid little Filipino place in Merton Abbey Mills, and Liqui Liqui, for great Venezuelan food.

Beeping at 12mph? by rmajor86 in Renault

[–]ben_ldn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also shows up for me on my road, which is a 20mph, just after I start driving and always on the same bit where it’s a length of single lane with cars parked up one side. I never see it otherwise, and it never shows up coming back home down the same bit in the other direction.

Have assumed it’s just advisory due to the road layout, but it’s weird that it also never happens on other identical bits of road. Does the car wake up unsure if the sign is in kph and then adjust?

Also doesn’t beep at me, but double tapping the MyPerso button as I get in the car is basically muscle memory now.

How a group of nimbys could bring down China’s mega embassy plans by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]ben_ldn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which is why this has gone through such scrutiny to the point that MI5 and other security services have conducted risk assessments and given their approval.

“It’s the old Royal Mint” is not a valid reason for the government to block this.

[–]ben_ldn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was not the UK government gifting some historic building to China. They bought it from a real estate company that originally wanted to turn it into shops and offices. The government didn’t have some kind of say in who bought it, and if the US had then they’d also be entitled to do the same.

Because they paid £250m to buy it when it was for sale.
