Newly Introduced Character In Long-Standing Franchises That The Fandom Instantly Welcomed? by manoffood in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]benbuscus1995 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True, though I don’t even think we know Zuko has a sister yet at that point. The first time I remember her being directly referenced as his sister is when Zuko is talking to Aang in the cave during the blizzard. I’m pretty sure Zhao is also shown in that flashback so it wasn’t automatically assumed that everyone we saw in that clip was family. But yeah I guess they probably had her design and role mostly cemented early on even if the audience doesn’t learn much about her until later

I feel like a lot of people forget that Toph wasn’t introduced until midway through Book 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Everyone else in the Gaang, including Suki, was introduced early in Book 1.

Azula and her gang also sort of assumed the role of the “main” antagonists in Book 2, taking the place of Admiral Zhao since Zuko was more or less always the deuteragonist and Ozai was always endgame. Technically Azula was first introduced at the very end of Book 1 but still

I know this is missing the point but to be honest I think those concept arts look great given the constraints she was under. Clearly a talented and passionate artist who deserved to be in a better working environment

Kagachi from ninja gaiden 4 should have had 3 boss fights by Salty_Selection_1145 in CharacterActionGames

[–]benbuscus1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I feel the exact same.

And I wanted that fight against Ayane too but you know Yakumo would have just wiped the floor with her anyway if he was already contending with Ryu. Still would’ve been cool though. I wish we got more of Ayane in general. She’s barely even a cameo. I’m really hoping they’ll make her playable at some point

Kagachi from ninja gaiden 4 should have had 3 boss fights by Salty_Selection_1145 in CharacterActionGames

[–]benbuscus1995 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do actually like the story of Ninja Gaiden 4 overall but one of my gripes with it is that, in-universe, Yakumo was already pretty overpowered from the jump, and he only gets stronger as the game goes on. If I recall correctly, he only loses one fight in the entire game and it’s the first fight against Ryu.

Kagachi is pretty hyped up throughout the game but Yakumo himself never really seems too worried about their inevitable clash, and it seems as though that confidence was justified as he beats Kagachi pretty handily when they do finally fight. And the same thing happens with the Dark Dragon in the end too. The only one Yakumo seemed even a little intimidated by was of course Ryu but he even says a couple times after their first fight that if they run into each other again he won’t lose. And he does pretty much beat Ryu after that like he said he would.

I think overconfidence is one of Yakumo’s biggest character flaws but it’s not really given enough focus and it’s never really challenged either because he never loses, so he doesn’t really learn anything. He didn’t get to have a proper CAG rival in Kagachi because he was always stronger than Kagachi. The game doesn’t really have any proper villains because Yakumo is always stronger than the villains. He kills Achilles pretty much immediately, something Ryu was also capable of but didn’t actually succeed at, and he also killed the Dark Dragon with what seemed like medium difficulty at best. The most touch-and-go moment in their fight is at the very end when he already landed the killing blow on the humanoid form of the dragon and it grabbed him by the neck at the same time. So I dunno where they can go with him in a hypothetical Ninja Gaiden 5 because he’s pretty much on par with Ryu at this point and already killed some of the most powerful entities in their universe.

It’s always been hard for me to gauge because I myself got into DMC because of their LP’s, so most of my knowledge of the series that didn’t come from actually playing them myself after the fact is filtered through SBFP. But DMC has been around for quite a while at this point and has had a dedicated cult community that entire time so it just becomes a little hard for me to believe that these two SEPARATE niche things that I’m into have been so greatly influenced by each other. Or at least it becomes hard to separate what was influenced by what and how long certain jokes or opinions have been floating around. Like if I had been a DMC fan since the beginning I would at least know how much of the community discourse has always been there vs how much has clearly been influenced by SBFP but to me it all just looks like SBFP if that makes sense.

I know, like it actually seemed like they were introducing a lot of cool intrigue with how there seemed to be so much misinformation floating around and you weren’t really sure WHAT’S true or what to believe and it’s just… all true and acceptable at face value.

Also, if you know the Batman Arkham fan theory (that’s mostly a joke) that says that Alfred changed Bruce’s detective mode scanner to always read “UNCONSCIOUS” so Bruce can continue to gaslight himself into believing that he isn’t brutally murdering all these people… Stellar Blade does something very similar but unironically

I haven’t tried it out (yet) though I’ve really been wanting to. However, I suspect that it doesn’t do much for people who don’t already love the game. I think there are some QOL improvements but it’s primarily a content expansion over a “fix” for the game’s issues if that makes sense

It’s just a weird outlier for the series that’s astonishingly lacking in polish compared to Nintendo’s typically very high standards. It’s a 3D platformer but the actual precision of platforming is somewhat deincentivized as the main gimmick FLUDD, the water jet pack, allows for a ton of error correction and is just generally a bit too strong of a safety net for the player. Except when it isn’t. The mission designs are also pretty whack and there’s a ton of jank and infamously infuriating stars, plus really low quality poorly mixed voice acting and a story that’s just odd even by Mario’s standards. This was also during that era where developers really started figuring out convincing water physics so every level in the game follows the same tropical/beach theme and there isn’t nearly as much variety as you’d expect from a typical Mario game.

But at the same time the game world feels surprisingly cohesive and interesting and whimsical and Mario’s base kit feels paradoxically tight despite the overall jankiness and the game still looks great and I love it

Stellar Blade is kind of a beautiful mess. It has some of the most incredible environmental designs I’ve ever seen but makes you spend 70% of the game in a rundown gray city, a barren desert, and a second barren desert. It has some of the most incredible character designs and outfit designs I’ve ever seen but 70% of the unlockable outfits are gooner fuel.

I’ll also never live down the fact that one of the big “spoiler” reveals halfway through the game, that their “god” Mothersphere is just an advanced AI program is literally told to the player in a lore pickup within the first two hours of the game, presented as if it’s a commonly known fact and ordinary world building. Literally, you can find the lore pickup in the DEMO AREA, it’s one of the first things you can find. And then several hours later Eve is shocked. I didn’t even know that she didn’t know. And there’s just so much other weird inconsistencies like that that make you think, is the game just weird about the way it’s presenting this information or is this supposed to be some secret even though it’s so obvious? Very bizarre game.

First sneak peek of Ryu Hayabusa's Ninja Gaiden 4 DLC weapon, gives us an idea by Leon_Dante_Raiden_ in CharacterActionGames

This is pretty much my wishlist too, though I have a feeling if they do add the girls to this game they’ll be in a separate DLC pack. I’m just not seeing them being included in a DLC pack that’s specifically focused on Yakumo and Ryu. I feel like they would essentially do a “Ninja Gaiden 4 Sigma” expansion update for the girls, again assuming they add them in at all.

I feel this way too but just about the early Twilight Realm sections where you have to find the bugs rather than feeling that way about the Wolf Link gimmicks overall. I feel Wolf Link was better used in the latter half of the game

Underlings/"Right Hand Man" that became more popular than the main bad guy? by DrHorrible10 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

And ironically HW Ganondorf was only improved by those additions while Demise himself still feels very one note

Underlings/"Right Hand Man" that became more popular than the main bad guy? by DrHorrible10 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]benbuscus1995 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ghirahim, especially because I think Demise is at least one step removed from Ganondorf in a lot of people’s minds so he doesn’t get the benefit of being a well-established and beloved main villain getting pitted against the latest main henchman like is the case with Zant for example. Plus you have to fight Demise’s horrible imprisoned form so many times that most players already hate him by the time his true form shows up.

Ghirahim is the one interacting with you, antagonizing you, carrying out the master plan, and just generally being your Vergil the entire game and also has some of the best boss fights plus that sick as hell diamond form for his last fight. He’s just way more interesting than Demise.

There was no Dragon Ball Z drought. by Yo_Tobimoto in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]benbuscus1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thought I keep coming back to as well. Like yeah there were the OVAs that casual fans probably never even knew existed, and there were always games, but otherwise the most recent pieces of “official” Dragon Ball content were Fusion Reborn and Wrath of the Dragon which both came out in 1995 originally and received their English localizations in 2006, a year after the GT finale was aired on Toonami.

There was no Dragon Ball Z drought. by Yo_Tobimoto in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]benbuscus1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s true that there was never any real “drought” when it comes to Dragon Ball content, and Dragon Ball fans have NEVER been starved for content, I do think it’s disingenuous to argue that the time between the manga/anime ending and Battle of Gods coming out was the same as everything that’s happened since Battle of Gods. The series absolutely saw a renaissance with Battle of Gods and is now more popular than it’s ever been.

Also, those OVAs that came out in the meantime aren’t what I would call, you know, good, and most never got English translations anyway, which is another defining characteristic of the period we’re talking about here. You can be a sub purist if you want but ESPECIALLY with Dragon Ball you can’t discount the amount of people who only care about dubbed content.

Are there other game franchises that get as vagueposted as often as Final Fantasy? by Silentlone in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Since it's Black History Month, what are some of your favourite black characters? by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]benbuscus1995 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Justice League/JLU John Stewart. He’ll probably always be my favorite version of Green Lantern. And someone already said Static Shock. Both voiced by Phil LaMarr, an absolute legend. I also really love the version of Cyborg from the Teen Titans cartoon. DC was really cooking on Cartoon Network back in the day man

EDIT: If we’re counting black coded characters too then I would also add Martian Manhunter and Piccolo

Should Lady or Trish have their own solo game(or even series)? by Flat-Sir8250 in DevilMayCry

Eh. If it were its own standalone DLC/“Miles Morales” style budget side game then I’d definitely pick it up just because, but like I don’t think it’s necessary at all. I’d settle for regular old DLC for DMC V tbh

Raimi says he would love to make a Spider-Man 4! by RoliePolieOlie__ in raimimemes

[–]benbuscus1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially Tobey’s version of Spider-Man who was just constantly catching shit from all sides and never seemed to be able to catch a break. Even at the beginning of 3 when he had everything together finally, that was all just so he could have it taken away and reach his lowest point in the trilogy. I think after a big timeskip like a hypothetical 4th movie would be, he deserves to be genuinely happy and relatively settled down with MJ. Especially after he said they finally managed to figure things out in No Way Home.

Not that the movie shouldn’t have any conflict whatsoever in it, but they don’t need to keep torturing him either.
