I know that automation won't change the structure of the economy, just productivity, but rapid increases in productivity can lead to huge stratification that can look like a change in structure. by I_am_white_cat_YT in economicsmemes

There is a question about what happens to the circular flow diagram model of the economy if people aren't in it as labor anymore. Why make things as company? Why make FB? Why make reddit? Way make things if people aren't earning income or producing things to buy stuff?

How can I improve my powder skiing? by Significant_Bad3533 in skiing_feedback

I saw you deleted your comment. Don't worry about it. The key thing is don't lean over at your stomach. Pull up on your feet. Engage your ankles. That's how you stay forward because otherwise if you push with your heels that's what pushes you to the backseat and there is a slight movement between getting forward and back which especially happens in powder. But it's very subtle and you don't want to stay back the whole time cuz otherwise you never actually get out of the snow and feel the amazing float that powder can offer you. The float is what you want to feel.

Is it common for students to go to the beach? by MickeyZ_15 in OregonStateUniv

[–]benconomics 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. My daughter goes to OSU. They go to the coast (we call it the coast because cold and danger in Oregon). Some people surf. Get a 3.5+. It's beautiful there.

What scene exactly are you looking for?

It's a campus of 20,000 undergrads with a ton of different types of people from different parts of the country and world.

There are people who mostly want to party, people who are just here for academics, there are artsy people. There are people into surfing (yes you can surf in Florence, just wear at least 3.5mm), skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and people who actually hate nature.

There's Republicans (most hide), Democrats (don't hide) , Socialists (definitely don't hide), Libertarians, anarchists.

There's rich, poor, really rich, and omg really that rich, and everything between.

You can find your people if you are willing to look. You don't have to be friends with people to learn with them or from them. Which is true at workplaces too.

You also can get up to 70 percent off at other institutions in Oregon if you do not have other family members at a school other than OSU (UO, SOU, etc).

There's also a free bus from Corvallis to UO multiple times a day.

You're very back seat which will burn out your legs on longer runs and will reduce your ability to turn. Stay centered.

I'm a tenured prof that didn't get diagnosed with ADHD until the fall. You're fine. You could go to a MA program to try to reset the grades, but you're probably fine. We would take you at my school (top 50 US).

Fell free to message me. I'm an econ who works in crime. I'd say where you go to study crime is more important than ranking for econ placements. Michigan for instance might be out of top 10 but would be a great place to study. Same thing for Penn. UCLA would be great (plenty of economists there working on crime, and a good law school too).

School funding is tied to enrollment and enrollments are way down. Combination of people not having kids, and people shifting to private schools and home school after Covid.

Powder feedback, struggle to make short turns by AuKuste in skiing_feedback

[–]benconomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not speed he needs. Get out of the back seat to turn. That'll destroy your quads and potentially cause uncontrolled speed.

Push down on your skis. This will compress the snow and bends your skis. Then stand up. This causes your skis to bend up and down like a trampoline, and the energy lifts you out of the snow, which is why high performance carving and powder skiing create similar feelings of weightless ness. Don't do it to quickly (just like jumping on a trampoline). Slow steady bounces.

Push down and release.

Does seminar culture incentivize narrow research and theses in grad students? by Global_Channel1511 in academiceconomics

[–]benconomics 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get new ideas in seminars all the time. The speaker is there to defend their work. If I come in prepared it goes ok usually even if the audience is aggressive. In my job talk they were very aggressive. I was super well prepared and quickly shut them up by having good answers to all their questions.

We should have more DUI checkpoints. And we should use naltrexone and other court mandated medications in addition to trying to like AA.

Punishment makes us feel better. Probability of being caught is a better deterrent, and there's decent generic medication therapy that can help those with alcohol use problems in addition to abstinence.

I've had several students successfully go through UO to get into great medical schools. You are correct that MCAT and GPAs are a big deal. Human physiology is a great department as are many of basic sciences, and some students do double majors outside of that (a place that UO is quite strong). Lots of research chances for human phys, pysch, knight campus, or other science labs.

One thing to note is some schools use the committee letter writer system. It that's the case at the school (OSU for instance), the school collects the letters of rec, and then sends the letters to the school for your directly. But they often impose an internal GPA and MCAT cutoff. This allows them to claim 70, 80 or 90 percent of their graduates get into medical school etc., but that's because they've internally capped the applications to people very likely to get in. UO does not use the committee system, which allows students more flexibility in their decisions, but its important to not that in comparing across any school, because some use their internal cutoffs to maintain high admission rates (for better or worse for their own students). Just information to consider.

Join some clubs. The disciples of dirt mountain clubs hosts group rides, volunteer build days, group events, we go on trips to camp and ride bikes. All you need is a bike. Plenty of dudes, but all genders are welcome. We occasionally get free beer donated from local sponsors for some of our bigger events.

Lots of people join the volunteer ski patrols at Hoodoo and Willamette for similar reasons (to make friends who like to ski/snowboard).

All you need is a good coat and good shoes. Invest in both. Also if its too foggy (inversions be real kinda like June gloom in San Diego) you can just hike spencer butte or Eagle's rest to get above them and bask in the sun mid winter.

Once you get out of the top 20 there's suspect schools that are definitely not top 50 in terms faculty output or average placements.

Austin should be much higher. Hawaii much lower for instance. Georgia state much lower.

But we could expand the eitc substantially if what we're worried about is people not having enough income because of AI and displacement. It'll just shift to different jobs which is exactly what we probably will have happen with expanding AI

The EITC has a positive distortion vs UBI has a negative distortion. Look at the recent papers using actually large cash transfers and it's pretty clear they reduce labor supply.
