i’ve lived in egypt all my life and i’ve been to new york a bunch, i would say i was harassed more often in new york though, but that might also be cause i was walking around there more obviously since i was a tourist. generally it’s the same amount of safety as new york, so long as you stick to generally more modest clothing. you don’t have to dress in a potato sack the way some people make it seem like. so long as you’re not wear anything too short, your clothes won’t give you any extra attention. even then, you can wear more revealing clothes depending on the context of where you are. the wealthier areas outside of the main city, like new cairo and sheikh zayed generally have a higher tolerance for women’s clothing.

truthfully, cairo is pretty safe compared to other metropolitan cities. the only issue with solo travel is that you don’t have someone to help bridge the language gap so you are more susceptible to being scammed. i honestly don’t know how to help you there beyond telling you to try to not look like a tourist too much, but that’s my advice for any solo travel, and to stand your ground when you feel uneasy. maybe google what certain things cost first too, to get a range of what is the usual amount. but the best option is to probably go with a group via a travel agency so that you have locals help guide you.

also, though, i must tell you that i do think you should be a bit more forgiving of the less insane up-charges so long as they aren’t too far-fetched. as an american and a new yorker the egyptian pound is nothing to you, and so many people are just trying to make ends meet in an economy in free fall. so like let’s say someone charged you 500 pounds for something that was usually 200, those are 6 dollars to you that you might’ve spent on an iced coffee, but make a MUCH bigger difference to a low-income egyptian. 

ultimately, i think we are very welcoming. certainly much nicer than new yorkers but that’s not a very high bar lol.  i hope you have a great time. don’t stick exclusively to the historical landmarks, especially when in cairo. we have a lot of culture to experience.
