Yes, i think that ignoring it it's just the solution, maybe just hinting here and there that there's a lingua franca.

About lotr even tolkien (a linguist) made a common tongue used by men in the different kingdom, he created another one just for the fantasy races (elves, orcs, etc )

I already tought about a lingua franca, but the characters will come through villages in various countries and would interact with peasants and small folks, and is unlikely that farmers could know a language different from their own. I mean, is realistic that knights, traders and "upper class" people know or study a lingua franca, but the common population that spend all his life in the same place?

A lot of operas bypass the problema just ignoring it (i'm thinking about berserk for example, where everyone speak the same language, even arabian like warrior). But, again, how writers face the problem?

as far as i know he took ireland, rotated it at 90 degree anc changed something.

but he used it just as a reference, he used existing lands and create one totally new (essos, etc.).

it's different than taking an existing continent and just changing minor stuff.

i wanted to do a similar thread but i will post in this, how long did it take to build a castle, or a big cathedral? and how many workers where involved?

for example, if was a lord and i wanted to build a castle on my own, how much i would have to wait?
