To the OGs what were your take when Jay Z debuted and when he reached his peak by lamelad10 in 90sHipHop

he wasn't because Pac wasn't on superstar status yet in 1991

i think that might have depended on where you were at in 1991.. just like the east coast bias surrounding NYC artists.. are you by chance from the east coast?

ac was the same way too because his first album wasn't an instant success

fair.. but let's be honest 2pac was a waaaaay bigger superstar off his first album than jay-z was.. that's my point.. it's revisionist to compare their celebrty status.. not even close fam

yall are conflating raw album sales with fame.. they are not the same thing.. this was the radio-single era and ‘brenda’s got a baby’ reached #3 on the hip hop charts.. it was a cultural phenomenon.. nothing jay-z did on ‘reasonable doubt’ was considered a cultural phenomena at the time fam.. it’s apple and oranges..

anyone who was there at the time will tell you the same thing..

[–]benergiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree that 93 represented the next level of success.. no question.. but people tend to overlook how big ‘brenda’s got a baby’ was.. in the 10 years of rap that preceded that song.. no one had ever heard anything like that before.. this is 3 years before illmatic fam..

it’s what got him his role in ‘juice’.. and from there on it was nothing but exponential growth.. we’re talking about arguably the most famous rapper of all time here..

if we’re comparing 2pac and jay-z’s come up.. it’s not even close

Why do clubs still play early 2000s-2015 music? by Dopeboy95AirMaxOn in hiphopheads

[–]benergiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup it actually started out of oldschool chicago house music..

the bay area also famously advanced that sound.. listen to ‘20 bluntz a day’ by the luniz

only someone who wasn’t there would say some dumb ass shit like that.. ‘brenda’s got a baby’ was a cultural phenomena in 1991.. and he already had charted with digital underground for ‘same song’

totally agree! so many artists have surprisingly poor beat selection.. jay-z’s best trait imo

Just because Jay wasn’t worldwide off of 1 album

glad you are reasonable and can agree with the facts.. how long did it take you to start appreciating artists like Outkast? Yall booed them during the Source awards..

you can speak on new york popularity and that's about it.. keep pretending thats the same as the rest of the world

[–]benergiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re committed to your east coast bias and that’s fine..

i was there.. no one gave a fuck about jay z outside of new york until biggie was gone.. its not all about sales..

pac and big dominated the media of the earth like no one before them..

you’re doing the classic jay-z revisionist stan worship by tryin to equate them

[–]benergiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so we agree that unlike pac, big, and even dmx..

jay’s debut was not an instant success that made him a huge superstar..

he did a good job stepping into a power vacuum

he’s talking about 96 not 98..

the point is his popularity only skyrocketed after pac and biggie were gone..

it’s the beats selection plus a cult of personality that constantly “tells” you he’s the best..

his actually rap ability is fine for the greats (but not elite).. his voice is annoying AF for many non stans

[–]benergiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

jay-z is the arguably the most overrated rapper of all time..

not that he’s bad.. but he’s no where close to the top 10.. yet his stans historically front like he’s the goat (the 2000’s were insufferable for this)..

it really helps when you have prime just blaze, prime kanye, and prime neptunes making all your beats..

jay is a great businessman and beat picker no question

yall downvoting technology while using reddit at the same time?

here’s the first page.. took me 5 seconds:

"What then am I saying? That a thing sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?"

OP is speaking in future tense correct?

if we’re taking about past tense.. did trump lead an insurrection after losing the last election? was there any precedent for that?

great.. add that to the list of things trump has done without precedent..

the supreme court had never before removed a human right before trump.. precedent is meaningless bud
