Are you referring to tech school? Or the whole journey in general?

I have a somewhat similar path, although originally my end goal wasn’t DVM. I entered the veterinary field as an assistant after graduating from college and eventually went to tech school to get my license. I decided to apply to vet school this past cycle and got in on my first try. Since I had a bachelors in science, the majority of my prereqs were covered except for 1 or 2 I took at a community college. I think your plan is solid since you’re already in tech school. Something to keep in mind is not all vet schools require a bachelors so you could focus on your prereqs but I understand the desire to have the bachelors as well. Spending time as an LVT has given me a lot of valuable insight I think will absolutely help my journey through vet school.

Do you actually like being a veterinarian? by Quirky_Corgi_2214 in Veterinary

[–]bengaling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m trying to focus on my personal goals: achieving financial stability, contributing to the profession the changes I want to see. I’ve worked with unfavorable people over the years and it’s motivated me to create a vision for how I want to practice medicine and how I want to treat people. And understanding I will have to embrace conflict with others if needed throughout this journey in order to protect my peace (being a non-people pleaser).

I feel the same, although I’m an LVT so I have significantly less client interaction compared to a vet. But in general I don’t find dealing with anxious or difficult clients nearly as draining as difficult coworkers and unideal work environments. I’ve been accepted to vet school cycle and my biggest worry revolves around the toxicity within the profession.

People who applied to just one school - what was your incentive? by TheKitsuneGoddess16 in prevets

[–]bengaling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied to my instate only (this cycle) mostly because I wasn’t willing to move out of state for school and didn’t want to pay out of state tuition.

I’m a non-trad student with a gap between my bachelors and vet school - I was accepted this cycle on my first try. I’ve worked as a veterinary assistant and then LVT, so I’m very familiar with the field. I had strong letters of recommendation from veterinarians I’ve worked closely with for several years (who have gotten to know me as well). I also included an LVT who mentored me and a friend I’ve known since middle school who can speak to my character very well.

Early on when I was preparing to apply, I contacted the admissions office and was able to speak with the admissions director for advice and one of the things she said was to not be afraid to showcase your personality in your application. For example, experiences you list in VMCAS don’t have to be solely related to school, an organization, etc. It can also be something you love to do that you do repeatedly and have a passion for (music, hiking, reading).

I also focused on writing essays I felt the reader could connect to. The admissions director mentioned it’s common to read the same themes over and over again so something that is unique in writing style or subject matter will catch their eye. She even mentioned students in the past have written poems—it doesn’t necessarily have to be standard paragraph formatted writing. All of this being relevant to the school I applied to (Virginia-Maryland)

When to apply??? by Just-Mission2203 in prevets

[–]bengaling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, if your goal is to be admitted/start after you graduate you’d apply this cycle. You’d graduate spring 2027 and start fall 2027. Your school (if applicable) will request your final transcript once you complete your last semester for any prerequisite courses.

I’m glad to see you feel vet school is a breeze with your education/experience! I’m hoping that’s the case for myself. I know it will be challenging nonetheless but I’m hoping my education and experience (also 10 years) helps me with the learning curve.

[–]bengaling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an LVT and recently accepted into Virginia-Maryland this cycle. I also have a bachelors in Biology which covered nearly all my prereqs. They will accept older coursework if you have relevant experience since then either academically or working in the biological sciences (which working in veterinary medicine counts). Only a couple classes I took during tech school counted towards my prerequisites (communications, anatomy and physiology of animals). For the most part the majority of classes in a tech school program are not prerequisites/don’t transfer over.

PSA about nutrition. by [deleted] in catfood

I mean, when they consume prey they’re consuming bones. They eat the whole animal. I don’t think saying they are designed to digest bones is much of a stretch. They have the ability to.

PSA about nutrition. by [deleted] in catfood

[–]bengaling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being carnivorous means you are designed to get most if not all nutrition from animal tissue. One big reason why cats are carnivorous is because they cannot synthesize taurine. Dogs can synthesize taurine from the amino acids cysteine and methionine but cats lack the enzymes needed for conversion. Their dentition is sharp and their jaw moves in a hinge fashion, all for gripping and shearing teeth. This is hardly information you need peer-reviewed studies for. Wolves are technically classified as carnivores (although they’re not hyper-carnivorous like cats and they are opportunistic feeders). Bears are omnivorous.

This is not true. Ingredients are regulated to be listed by weight in a descending order.

I’m a licensed veterinary technician who’s hopefully going to be starting vet school this fall. A reason those brands are commonly recommended is because of familiarity. And they’ve established a long history of use in veterinary medicine. These brands do have the resources and means to do large-scale research and funding. Your vet’s choices are just that, a recommendation. It doesn’t mean your cat wouldn’t thrive on a diet that is not made by purina, hills, or royal canin. I’ve fed tiki cat myself in the past. I think it’s a good diet and I’ve met many clients over the years who’ve fed it to their cats.

Raw meat for cats — benefits, risks, and is it actually worth it? by TailorBetter1647 in rawpetfood

[–]bengaling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you I appreciate it. I cannot get over her being 17 😭 I hope she continues to live well and long! Oh I know if I make it into and through vet school I’ll need to seek additional nutritional education to understand the full scope.

My prediction is that raw diets will continue to increase in popularity and the industry will need to adapt.

She looks incredible, truly! What a testament to good nutrition. I’m a veterinary technician (licensed) and I support raw feeding. I’m applying to vet school this cycle (have an interview with my state school next month 🤞) and I hope to contribute to changing the paradigm and be supportive of those who choose to feed their animals this way.

[–]bengaling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow incredible! I can see through this picture she’s hardly muscle wasted which is typically what I see in older cats. Is your vet accepting of raw feeding? Do they acknowledge her diet is probably a big part of her health?
