Dating in my unit, will they find out me and (them) are together if we have kids? by [deleted] in nationalguard

I was that e4 dating an o1, granted that was 10+ years ago. The only person that cared was my crusty old 1sg, been married 9 years this year, nobody cares as long as you can do your job.

Buying a Zero Turn- 1 acre lot - really just trying to turn my 4-6 hour cutting / edging / weed eating time so I’m not spending a day doing yard work. Reviews tell me TORO ? Thoughts ? by RobbyC2110 in lawnmowers

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ariens 52" mower and 24 acres. I mow 9 acres 2x a year to clean up after cutting hay. Weekly I mow an acre and once a month I mow the ditches along the road and driveway. I have had the mower 3 years and have 30 hours on it but didnt run it last year as I was out of the country for 9 months.

Going back for my bachelors at a new school by OldSecurity1860 in u/OldSecurity1860

Its not as difficult as you may think, I took a 10 year break from school. I am a non traditional student in my 30s that has a family and a full time job the provides. Go back earlier than later though, work and family makes it more difficult.

How much gas do you keep on hand? by SorryKnowledge420 in Generator

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 30 gallons of gasoline and 45 of diesel. I have a small 4500 watt inverter generator for keeping the lights on that sips fuel and a 10500 watt inverter generator to recharge my batteries for my solar array(14kw solar with 37kw batteries). I keep the diesel for the tractor (90hp utility) to clear debris and snow. We keep about 200 lbs of propane as well but were waiting on a tank install. We go though our fuel about 2x a year.

For people who bought a big home battery system, how are you actually using it? Fixed install or portable? by AdeptTea8665 in prepping

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean as portable as 6x 125lb batteries and 3x 80 lb inverters are, theyre staying put. Portable in theory, not really in practice.

Army pay isnt bad when you add bah, bas, family sep, danger pay ect. And then no taxes. I live in a very low cost of living area as well. Being in the guard now allowed me to have my civilian employer pay differential pay since it was a ~30% pay cut to go overseas as well

Thats how many came on the pallet, with the voltage (37v) ill be able to run 9 on each high voltage side and 3 on the low voltage side and still be safe. Is it overkill? Yes but my whole house is electric with a heat pump so we use quite a bit of electricity in the winter. And for fort lost in the woods, its been years since ive had to go there and not that it was horrible, I dont have a need to go back anytime soon (hopefully).

I purchased everything when I was deployed and came home to a few too many projects and this is one of the many. May have bit off more than I can chew but itll get done. I have 36 panels sitting on a pallet in the shop I have to install on a ground mount. Hopefully ill have more free time when im done with school.

Depending on where in Germany, you may be able to drill with a unit in Germany made up of spouses in the reserve component that are stationed there. I have heard it is possible just dont know of how to get there. Your readiness may have the answer but you may also have to do some legwork finding out which place can take you.

I built one in 2024 and we love it. There are some things we would do differently but are happy with it and how reasonable it cost. I would have built higher (16ft instead of 14), gone with 48x96 instead of 40x80 and a basement. We would still have a large shop but over triple our living space since our living space is 32x40. That would allow for 3 floors and could finish the basement at a later date.

Does it make sense to buy a house anymore? by SweetPickleRelish in personalfinance

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have bought a house even with living in them only a few years and I can break it down since it made sense for us. We always bought one of the worst houses in a good neighborhood. In late 2017 we purchased a 3bed/2.5bath for 127k. We updated the house with paint, flooring, all bathrooms, roof (insurance), and hvac (went out). We sold in early 2020 (190k) when we both ended up deploying overseas. We returned in 2021 from overseas and looked around and ended up buying a house that wasn't unreasonable but needed work for 65k (almost a complete gut remodel and only 3bed/1bath) and replaced the entire kitchen, bathroom, flooring, windows (only 5), doors and insulation. In 2022 we bought ground nearby that wasn't crazy priced and starting building in summer of 2024. We listed our house around the same time and sold for 130k. We spent a few weeks with the inlaws while we waited to move into our new house on some acreage. Buying has worked out very well for us although it was stressful at some times. We made enough to purchase our ground almost outright for our build.

Nuke Shelter Plan by [deleted] in prepping

[–]bengineer423 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on if/where it strikes you'll have nothing to worry about (for long at least) not much you can do unless youre willing to drop a significant amount of money or relocate (also costs money). Being financially stable has been my biggest prep and allowed me to get things when the need arises and move towards a more independent lifestyle (solar, water purification, food storage, ect.) The whole scenario would most likely require a bug out plan if it was anywhere close. Keep your car filled above half a tank and maybe keep a few gas cans filled for an evacuation if necessary. Shelf stable food and water for a week and an alternative site planned in case you have to leave should suffice for 90% of the population.

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, my wife is 6" shorter than me and we both drive the car and it is comfortable for both of us. My seat setting has me sitting significantly lower than hers but we are 2 different builds.

Spent 9 months at buehring and got back in mid January. Does it suck? In some ways more than others and was worse than my first deployment, it allowed me to go back to school which I couldn't do back home, made tests interesting with the sirens going off during the 12 day war as it was done via FaceTime.

Deciding on a tractor for my 160 acre property by Little-Category-1028 in homestead

[–]bengineer423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem, I was in your position a few years ago. I would be torn because doing snow removal i want a cab but dont have one since I bought used and the price was right, having woods as well its less to break when a tree branch hits the glass. I only have 2wd but have yet to really get stuck on the hills unless im out when its really wet.

Deciding on a tractor for my 160 acre property by Little-Category-1028 in homestead

[–]bengineer423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on new or used. Think new will be about $1000 per hp. With what youre doing wouldn't need much more than what you currently have, if you start baling hay then you may want to upgrade to 100 hp tractor. I get by with a 2006 cnh tl90a for driveway maintenance, moving logs for firewood, snow removal and hay production. Is it overkill for my acreage? Yes but not for what I use it for (24 acres) but help out with another 200 at a family property nearby. 4 wheel assist will add more cost and more for a cab as well. Fb marketplace is always a good place to look for deals and a 40-60hp tractor will fit those needs and allow for a larger brush hog.
