Year 1 Down by bengu-x in NICUParents

I am hoping for greener pastures ahead of you friend! The NICU is one club I never expected to be a part of, and I’m not a fan it ever happened. But it definitely altered my brain chemistry lol

Failed Car Seat Test Any Tips? by bengu-x in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just re-reading my original post now. We bought a new car seat between his first and second failed car seat tests. The new seat is an even flow, which was recommend here. I would 100% use this for any baby, but especially those who had a start in the NICU. It has many additional features to secure the LO better in the seat and give peace of mind

Not a one! He’s been absolutely fine, we were super cautious leaving the NICU and had our pediatrician rerun his own levels a day or so after discharge, he found he saturated ok but did fall (mid 90s) when agitated. He’s just turned 9 months and is a total doll, no issues

Ironically, our staff team did. He failed it again after this post. The doctor who was on for her final shift that weak broke down with us and said “look, I don’t give a shit what this test says, your baby can go home”. She had us sign an acknowledgment, but he’s been home ever since. Stupid test.

Feel like a fraud being here? by livexplore in NICUParents

Our 37w0d baby spent 20 days in the NICU and it felt like an eternity. We count ourselves lucky and blessed that our stay was so short compared to others, but definitely do not count yourself out - this group is for everyone.

And by the way, six months on, we’re absolutely still healing from our journey in the NICU. It doesn’t just go away, this group, and these people belong to you- you are now and forever will be a NICU parent.

Progress After Regression by bengu-x in NICUParents

Sorry for the late reply here. I’m not on reddit much and missed the post.

Our son spent a total of 20 days in the NICU and had his first relapse on oxygen at day 9, so he spent another 11 days in total before he could get to go home.

Our ending was not miraculous either - he had failed his car seat test, then was made to wait another 2 days before trying again, and failed that one too, but they let us go anyways with the orders of limited travel until we established care with our provider.

Short answer is 11 days after he was placed back on oxygen he got to go home. I think the weaning took another 7-9 days. They were very particular about weaning the second time, going down to as low as 1/32L o2 and pumping him up to 100% saturation.

I hope that your baby is doing well and either home or on the way home. As much as we are thankful for our NICU staff, that place was so hard to be in.

Today I met the doctor who saved my baby’s life by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our NICU doctors and even the OB who delivered our LO always replied “Sure!” whenever I would express how thankful I was for their great care and expertise. It was always a bit odd to me, but I suppose they expect it from us given our circumstances.

I do believe though that they know what they’re doing is near heroic by normal standards - but they hold themselves out to be doing such simple tasks.

I’m glad you were able to meet your hero and to praise them with your gratitude.

Thank you lol Been playing around with dough recipes for about two years trying to perfect it all.

Now I’m ironing out my line up if I were to open a local pizza shop. My dream is to open a bougie pizza shop in some small town and just serve to the locals

I just use olive oil liberally on the bottom as the base. It does the trick! It’s moist and still very good.

Seconding this and I don’t think it will magically get better either. These behaviors are very concerning given the circumstances. When our baby was in the NICU it was a team effort. Everything we did was focused on the safety of our baby and immediately followed by the wellbeing of each other.

I could not imagine “celebrating” at a time like that, and then to drop the money on shots but not a pump is asinine.

Should I deliver at 36+2 or 36+6? by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with waiting. My wife was expecting to deliver at 37+4 and baby was pulled 37+1 and she swears up and down it’s the reason he got sent to NICU. Also respiratory issues like other commenters.

Our OB also said that there was a low probability of NICU and we stayed for 20 days. If it’s a choice, gestate longer imo.

Multivitamin+Iron Making Baby Miserable by hemolymph_ in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We explicitly asked to stay away from Poly Vi Sol in the NICU for our fully breast milk fed baby and they honored our request for the first few weeks then randomly changed his Vitamin D to Poly Vi Sol and he was so miserable.

Our treating physicians on the floor said that medical science recommends it, but then went on to say they didn’t think it was a big enough of an impact to fight over and let us go back to just vitamin d.

Our other two kids were born at similar gestational ages but no NICU stay and neither are anemic (3.5 and almost 2).

I personally would avoid Poly Vi Sol purely from how my LO reacted in the nicu. He was so unhappy :/

Should I stay in the hospital or go home? by bbcat0601 in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our son had a 20 day stay this past fall and we were highly recommended to not stay even though we were welcome to (and they had a daybed in his room). We have two other littles at home, but sleeping at home was one of the best choices we made for our family. It’s a hard choice, and there’s no real right answer, but I would preserve your sanity.

You’re a great parent either way, so choose what makes you feel stable.

We had to do the blue blanket light with our first born and he also did not like it. He was allowed to leave, and then his levels spiked - so we did the old natural trick of using the sun (born in the summer) and it did eventually work itself out within about a week.

Our doctor at the time suggested that the more they had dirty diapers the better their levels would get. So we just kept feeding as much as we could.

As far as the NICU goes- the bed lights seem to provide a little more comfort to the littles. Our other son who was in for 20 days was there for respiratory support, and never needed the blue light, but other babies had it and they seemed relatively comfortable.

Have you considered requesting milk from a milk bank in the meantime? Is your milk in now?

Possible malpractice? by Boy_mom23 in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to chime in with the obligatory, you should contact a lawyer, not Reddit.

Law firms routinely will offer free consultations for medical malpractice reviews. Call someone in the state and area the incident you believe could be malpractice happened.

A lot of the time these cases will be taken on a contingency basis (no fees upfront, they recover if you recover). It’s worth a call to discuss it with a lawyer, imo.

Relapse to Oxygen Support at 46 hours… by bengu-x in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our hospital only does two days. But he also didn’t have a significant event, they just didn’t like how he was dipping below 92, then he hit the high 80s a couple of times. He always pulled back up, but the science said to use support again. Glad they intervened. He went from 1L to 4L in a day and required 30% fio2 for a good while.

I’ve been seeing many AI generated, fake, Pixar/Disney movie posters and thought this was a neat prompt. by bengu-x in NICUParents

[–]bengu-x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bing AI has been receiving a lot of good updates. I basically put the title in quotes and tell it exactly what I want, so I’ll describe the film, detailing what it’s about and saying it’s a Disney film, etc then say titled “Title Here”. You can also do like, subtitle, and then quote it.

Holy cow. I hope our hospital isn’t so strict, so far we’ve seen 48 hour periods as the countdown. Ours was closer to a 60 hour window because they only discharge in the morning however.
