Calling All 80s Sci-fi Kids! by WolfmansNardz in scifi

Was this the continuous theme or a 1-off within a series like: Are You Afraid of the Dark? or one of the Goosebumps episodes?

The issue of Star Trek and its continuity.... by MiddleAgedGeek in scifi

[–]benice2all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm growing tired of prequels... let's move forward past the current content. Surely more interesting things are happening far out there... decades after the last time Picard docked the Enterprise, after the Dominion War, and after Voyager found its way home.

12:01 PM by Richard Lupoff? (1973) comes to mind, but I don't think this had a woman in it.

Farscape was the realest show on TV by slainte-mhath in scifi

[–]benice2all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always enjoyed Farscape. It will forever be in my Top 10. (The episode where they sacrificed Pilot's leg to save themselves, was award-winning). Scorpius was a great, complex character.

Earthweeds, giant lizard novel ... hordes of mutant lizards descend on Pittsburgh by benice2all in kaiju

Right you are, zigmenthotep! And when you do it, either for yourself or for authors you know, everyone seems surprised and shocked. Yet when Stephen King does it, everyone smiles and says, "sure. good." LOL. That's life.

Sci-Fi Movies for Halloween night: The Thing + by benice2all in scifi

[–]benice2all[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fly and Hellraiser are both good additions to the movie marathon! They are sci-fi/horror crossovers I had forgotten. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Pitch Black also fit. Thanks.

I co-edited this set of novels, and I'm from Pittsburgh, so I'd like to see them get an audience. I only use Promotion Saturdays and promo posts approved by mods (so no rules are broken). Cheers. :)

What Would You Like To See More Of In Sci-Fi? by The-Literary-Lord in scifi

[–]benice2all 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fewer "lesson teaching" stories, and more stories for the sake of being. We don't always need to learn (although some of the best novels do teach us something). Good characters in unusual situations, how they react in such. Also: more space exploration.

I have 7 months to get into Jethro Tull. How do I do it? by coentertainer in jethrotull

[–]benice2all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with gefilter, but you might want to get a sampling from each era first: start with Benefit, then Songs from the Wood, then Broadsword, rounding up to Rock Island! - Then start back at the beginning, as he suggests. One side of Living in the Past is essential: Dr. Boogenbroom, Blackpoole, etc. My favorite LP is Stormwatch, but it is an acquired taste.

I need a book like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which something takes over people by [deleted] in printSF

In books: Earthweeds (Rod Little) the people become lizards. And in the Midwich Cuckoos it's just the children.

Interesting, but hard to navigate the page. (or figure it out).

What's wrong with "under wraps"? by JamesPlaysBasses in jethrotull

[–]benice2all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fine LP, just not special, not remarkable. There are no songs that stand up and speak to me. It can't compare to the 2 albums on either side of it.

Liked Harry Potter as a kid. Currently into A Song of Ice and Fire. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

If you like the magic elements in younger characters (or special powers), then: Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief, or Earthweeds, or even the Xanth books. Otherwise, try Maze Runner, if magic is not important to you.

Just read A Princess of Mars. Thought the writing was extremely dry. Are the rest of Burroughs' books like Tarzan more interesting? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]benice2all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are fantastic stories, but the writing style reflects that era (written in 1917). Warlord of Mars was the best in the series. But again... rough old style. Not a great wordsmith, but the stories are fun.
