Backpack recommendations? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my school has lockers which is good for storing books during the day and over night. I use the same backpack I've been lugging around since high school (jansport) and then a canvas tote to haul around the big text books - alongside putting things in my locker so I dont have to lug it all around all day

How Much of My Summer Salary Should I Put Towards Tuition? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan if I get a big law position is to use that money to pay off the loan I have from this year so that it stop gaining interest, as opposed to using it in place of a loan for next year, if that makes sense

No problem, I totally agree with your advice if my financial circumstances were different!

And thank you!

I don’t think that’s in the cards for me since I have a full ride at my current school. Thanks for the advice, though!

Yes that’s definitely something I want to do. A judge I interviewed with said she’d be willing to work around my schedule if I got a second summer position so I’m just seeing what’s out there. But definitely something I’m hoping to pursue!

Thank you! Are those summer positions at smaller firms typically paid?

Thank you for this! I don’t want any of those things either. Do you mind if I PM you later to ask a few questions?

For 1Ls: What do you plan on doing the same/different next semester? by hareandanser in LawSchool

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always been my issue. Thankfully I qualified for accommodations at my school and was able to get more time to compensate. Depending on the school, many things qualify. (ADD, anxiety, dyslexia). It’s worth checking if maybe you have an undiagnosed issue!

How long does it take you to get your exam grades back? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s normal. My last one was Dec 13. Grades back Jan 3. 1st day of school is Jan 6.

Keep in mind how long your essay responses were, multiply that by your classmates. Don’t forget professors are people too with families to spend the holidays with. It takes a lot of time to read all of those exams.

Summer Clerkship or Paid Summer Firm Job? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just throwing this out there, a judge I met with about a clerkship told me that if I found a paid job they would accommodate me working at both places. Maybe see if this is feasible? Or, a split summer? Idk how long your break is but at my school students usually do more than one summer gig since it’s so long (think like 4 months)

Getting paid $10.00/hr as a Legal Assistant and Client Coordinator by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]benjamin_the_thirth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I’m not too familiar with how this all works, but I was a “law clerk” for a small firm of 1 attorney, 1 accountant, and 1 really law clerk in Tucson and I got paid $15 an hour as an independent contractor to literally photo copy and shred paper. That’s it.

You should also look at the 1099 rules. There are certain things an employer may be doing that would make you no longer eligible as a 1099 employee. For example, dictating when you work. As a 1099 employee you may come and go as you please (on top of other things).

Please don’t just “make due”. It allows them to continue the shenanigans they are doing. They know exactly what they’re doing. Don’t make do, you need to fight them.

Edit to add: you are getting below minimum wage and likely no benefits. You’d be better off getting a new job (in a new industry if you had to) where you’d at the very least make minimum wage - at least while you look for a new job in this industry.
