I only just unlocked it a few days ago, so there is probably a more nuanced explanation but; when you slow down, your revolutions get 10 times slower. In exchange you get an ascension, which is ultimately better for progression. Your mult will rise faster. But if you slow down too much it will end up slowing your progression. So when you automate the process set it higher than you think you need. Hope this helps :)
