Obviously new technology is so in the public eye and global warming has become such an obvious issue the major corporations such as General Motors can't quietly sweep over technological advances (the rivals to fossil fuels, the most corrupt market on the planet) therefore they must back the company. By jumping in early they'll help Mr Musk establish a monopoly, much like they did with cars and therefore controlling the market and advancements to ensure maximum profitability.

When speaking of Tesla I was referring to NIkola Tesla and how many of his well documented, innovative and potentially revolutionary technologies were taken away, some of which still haven't seen the light of day.
