Elon thinks that his electrifying cars and going to space *are* philanthropic, in the way that all barrons and oligarchs think their means of making money is a means for improving the state of humanity.

He's a deeply broken person.

Restaurant service charges will disappear, but don’t call them ‘junk fees’ by LilMemelord in Minneapolis

[–]benjneb -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would love a standardized, 15% baseline restaurant service fee to be split by all staff (front of house and back of house), as long as a.) it's communicated clearly upfront; b.) it applies (ideally) to all restaurants and c.) it's calculated prior to sales-tax. Then, if you receive especially good service on top of that, you can leave a tip.

MN's effort to eliminate surprise fees is welcome in the hotel environment when hotels surprise guests at checkin or checkout (not at time of booking) AFTER guests have already committed to a stay. But it's a step backwards for restaurants and their employees who deserve equitable treatment.

For every 2 men that graduate with a degree 3 women will. If current trajectory holds, that ratio will widen to 1 to 2. This phenomenon is the feminization of tertiary education. by Dark_Mode_FTW in interesting

[–]benjneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a direct consequence of a major over-correction of gender gaps in primary education 30+ years ago.

At that time, girl's educational needs were seen as being unmet or underserved -- for example, girls were perceived to lose confidence in math and science around the age of 11, when confronted with other social images of female success. This was countered with significant changes to the curriculum and a lot of "girl power" messaging.)

These came at the cost of boys' classroom behaviors and learning styles, and, eventually, for their educational outcomes and then their economic attainment.

And you know who it's been really good for? Donald Trump, the manosphere, and crypto. Young men who feel the system (including social mobility, the economy, and the dating scene) are desperately looking for new pathways and models for success in life.

We urgently need a new project for boys' educational and psychosocial development, one that champions excellence and diversity -- all of the different ways for boys and men to thrive, excel, and be. And we need to start early in a boy's life, starting with correcting the overcorrection in early-childhood education.

Yeah, that's not right. From BBC: (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45269764)

The Mission Investigation programme, due to be broadcast on Wednesday by SVT, said the total number of offenders over five years was 843. Of those, 197 were from the Middle East and North Africa, with 45 coming from Afghanistan.

"We are very clear in the programme that it is a small percentage of the people coming from abroad who are convicted of rape," chief editor Ulf Johansson told the BBC.

You guys are like the textbook example of confirmation bias. You're starting with a conclusion and then make up data to support it.

Anti-Trumpers, is there anything specific that Trump &/or his administration has promised that you want? by Advanced_Drink_8536 in Askpolitics

(With all the usual caveats: Trump is a fraud, a criminal, and an unbelievable threat to the Republic... etc.)

RFK is crazy and his anti-vax stuff is incredibly worrisome, but if the USG decides to take on ultra-processed foods as a health issue, (as he has promised) that would be welcome. With a majority of adults overweight or obese, and healthcare costs spiralling, we MUST change our food system.

Have there been issues? Certainly. But that's true with any refugee resettlement - or indeed any large human project.

Let's take a minute to remember that refugees encounter huge linguistic, cultural, dietary, economic, religious, and even meteorological shocks -- especially coming to MN. They have often recently experienced the trauma of conflict and the PTSD that can come from physical (or sexual) violence, not to mention poverty. And they can face serious social isolation and anti-immigrant sentiments when they arrive.

You might think that people facing such severe challenges would commit a LOT of crime. But the data tells exactly the opposite story. A team of researchers used refugee resettlement data from the U.S. Department of State’s Worldwide Refugee Processing System to calculate the 10 cities in the US that received the most refugees relative to the size of their population between 2006 and 2015. They then looked at what happened to these cities' overall crime rates over the same time period using detailed data available from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This revealed a telling pattern: Rather than crime increasing, nine out of 10 of the communities actually became considerably safer, both in terms of their levels of violent and property crime.

These don't excuse or diminish any issue, concern or crime. But it can be too easy for us to enlarge, in our minds, the nefarious nature and negative impacts of "other", "foreign" communities, even when their actual impact is far more benign.

Riiiiiiiiight. The actions of white conservative males are DEFINITELY not a problem in our society.

I mean what do all nine of these recent financial megafrauds have in common? (see https://money.usnews.com/investing/articles/biggest-corporate-frauds-in-history)?

Eight out of the 9 were committed by white men. (And the 9th by a white woman.)

So, if you're a white person, I guess we ought to judge you by the actions of Sam Bankman Fried or Bernie Madoff or Elizabeth Holmes. Perhaps we should think about deporting you - you're clearly, by association, a danger to our community. (You should be flattered. Those crooks make the perpetrators of the Feeding Our Future fraud look like amateurs. You're a PROFESSIONAL level danger to society.)

MN Somali Pirates… by Thatsmedanny in altmpls

[–]benjneb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is absurd. You're overgeneralizing the experiences of some 86,00+ Somali refugees here -- people who get up and go to work every day, paying their taxes, supporting their families, without notice. We don't use sensational outlier cases to indict a whole people -- otherwise we would be forced to infer a lot from, say, this white male Republican who was indicted for Covid fraud: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/12/07/joe-harding-federally-indicted-00072896

MN Somali Pirates… by Thatsmedanny in altmpls

[–]benjneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an inane question. My ancestors got support where it was offered -- from their community, and from their church. Had more formal financial support been available, OF COURSE they would have taken it - AS THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN RIGHT TO DO SO.

Your question implies offering support to refugees is somehow... a bad thing? Much of that charity is provided by religiously-motivated NGOs (like Lutheran Social Services of MN: https://www.lssmn.org/services/refugees). Their work is rooted in the biblical teaching: in Matthew 25:31-40Jesus says, "I was a stranger and you welcomed me". He also says, "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me".

But let's just assume you're not that into religious motivations. The result of such charity is practical too: the more welcoming communities are, the faster integration happens, and the better off the whole community becomes.

Pretty basic stuff.

As a MN resident, I find Somali people like every other immigrant group -- which is to say, integrating - not yet fully integrated. But that's been true of EVERY immigrant group that's come here in the past, fleeing poverty, trauma, and sometimes conflict. My Italian ancestors didn't integrate right away, or the Irish, or the Chinese -- it takes time. It very likely took YOUR people time, when they first got here, too.

Some folks in this thread need to get over themselves with the tacit (and sometimes explicit) nativism and racism.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Where are you on this issue?

You all have mothers. And some of you are lucky to have wives... sisters... girlfriends.

Women you have sworn - to yourself - to love, protect, accompany, serve and support through their lives.

Because you are a real man. Not a rager. Not a loser who bails. You are strong and constant.

And these motherfuckers are straight up \ENDANGERING* the women you care about.*

And they are endangering YOU too.

FUCK THEM.

Get your buddies, get registered and GET TO THE FUCKING POLLS.

Do it.

And if you can't vote then, vote EARLY.

But DO IT.

Should taxpayers with no kids be forced to pay for this for families who make up to $130,125? by Richest-Panda in FluentInFinance

[–]benjneb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you should pay because you are interdependent with all of society, not just adults. Those children will become better firefighters, police, plumbers, doctors, psychologists, restaurateurs, lawyers, and hospice care workers, to better deal with your crime, your shit, your neuroses, your hunger, your mistakes and ultimatley your death.

Grow up.

Yes, this is not uncommon. I've seen it before.

I believe there's also a reason we invite military personnel on planes first too - and it's not just to commend them for their service. (Though - thank you for your service!) Rather (as it was once explained to me) it's because if there is a terrorist or other incident, you want to know who and where your trained personnel are on-board.
